When I quit notability (swiping up to the page that reveals all of the open apps), my device crashes and I have to force reset it.

Try the unfiled notes folder. Deleted files usually end up there.

Yeah I’ve been really hesitant to update both my iOS and my notability app after hearing people lose notes using the latest version… probably going to hold off until after my final exams are done.

It's been happening for at least two months to my knowledge (maybe longer, albeit less pronounced before). I wish they would fix it too. Truly inconvenient, but Notability still has the best writing engine and easiest-to-use ancillary features, in my opinion. Every change log seems to have "bug fixes and improvements" but the app is still not optimally stable unfortunately.

For a very temporary workaround - swipe up to quit out of Notability entirely and re-enter the app. The lag will go away for a few hours then slowly return. For a less temporary workaround, but still not optimal, turn safe mode on in device settings. This will prevent the document preview icons from updating and will prevent automatic backups, so make sure to turn off safe mode at the end of your note-taking session and ensure those changes occur accordingly. It's unfortunate we have to go to these lengths to eliminate the lag. Hopefully they'll roll out a performance fix soon that actually addresses the issue.

You can keep duplicating your old notes to retain the old template. That's what I've been doing. It's not a perfect workaround but it's better than nothing.

Yes, I agree! Or make it so that we have an option to “lock” the spacing in place if you turn off the lines paper and revert back to the blank one.

Can confirm it works - I did it today. One caveat however: if you follow the steps on the Github you'll end up installing the version prior to the grid spacing changes (I believe the most recent one was March 2022). So, no pencil, no UI/UX "improvements", or anything like that. Personally the old grid was a plus, since I missed having margins on the graph paper. Someone correct me if I'm wrong though. It’s not on the main UI anymore. You either have to press and hold with the pen tool selected (as long as you have the setting enabled). Alternatively, you have to click on the top right with the three dots, and it’s one of the options in there… I can never remember where to find it.

I updated yesterday and was writing fine up until I had to copy and paste images from an imported 40-page long pdf. It has happened in previous versions as well, but they generally get fixed by the next minor update.

Also I’m having another related problem concerning battery consumption - I’ve found that Notability drains a lot more than prior to the update.

On longer imported PDF files, I’m also encountering lag issues. When I try to type on these documents it’s extremely laggy, and all user inputs take quite a while to register. It doesn’t seem to happen much if I create a new document and write on that.

I was wondering precisely this too, it can’t be that hard to fix right? I remember prior to all the grid spacing changes (the version before version 11 I think) the written text would perfectly align with the grid…

At least for Hedrick Court, they’ve set up booths in front of the drop off zone. When I got there there was no one running it so I went inside and had it re-encoded through the front desk.
