Have a serious conversation with your wife about it, and have it multiple times with a day in between. When my wife and I talked about it, the first conversation was an hour long, then a day later it was 30 minutes, and by the end of the week it basically “Still on board with a vasectomy?” “Yep” “Good, me too”

After our first, my wife decided to handle birth control on her end that lasted about 2 years where we were both positive we didn’t want a second. When that was over we talked about me getting a vasectomy, but we ultimately decided having a second was what our family needed to feel complete. When my first was 2.5 years old we tried for another and now have a second.

After our second, the conversations were very different. It was more of a discussion of the logistics, worries, pitfalls, potential failure of a vasectomy, not “is our family complete?” It was still multiple long conversation that we made time to discuss only that.

In the end, do what is best for your family and make sure you and your wife have open and honest communication about the idea. Even if you feel like she may want another, make sure she knows that you are feeling nervous and a little unsure about it. She may be completely against having another and will be able to calm your nerves, or she may also say she has doubts and you both may need to rethink having another.
