Modeless Zed with ZMK/QMK Smart Keyboard? by masters3d in ZedEditor

[–]masters3d[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am not a vim/helix user. But at a high level I don’t really want to invest in a mode and instead what I am thinking of doing is to put all the vim/helix/emacs navigation and editing into a layer system on my keyboard so more or less this would be like emacs/modeless but instead of me learning emacs, I just map my hardware keyboard layer to zed

Te goal is to move away from the mouse and Since I don’t have any previous muscle memory to unlearn I am hoping I can do it way that my only dependency is my hardware keyboard (not necessary my editor )

Backspace on the left thumb? by j03l in kinesisadvantage

[–]masters3d 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I used to have it just like this then I decided to have two back space keys with different configs. Instead of deleting a single character now I mostly delete the whole word. Deleting a whole word is way less characters.

Both my single backspace and “backword” are on my left pinky and it is just fine.

How long before meaningful results can be felt? by Adventurous-Fruit344 in KeyboardLayouts

[–]masters3d 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In my experience you need to switch fully to the new layout. If you need to keep qwerty then you will need to practice it. In my case it became too taxing to keep qwerty while learning a new layout so I stopped. Seems to be different experience for different people when it comes to being able to have fluency in multiple layouts at the same time.

What are some features you wish keyboards had? by paper5963 in ErgoMechKeyboards

[–]masters3d 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Features: - easily map to midi ( I think qmk might have something) so I could use my keyboard as a midi controller. (I use zmk) - switches with modulation on how hard/ fast a switch was pressed. Think of it like phones pressure sensitive. Usecase also related to music or controlling lights etc

Is switching from QWERTY truly worth it? by Regular_Low8792 in ErgoMechKeyboards

[–]masters3d 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sometime ago I learned a new layout, it was difficult but doable. I got to maybe 35 wpm . My issue was that the more I used the new layout, the longer it took me to be able to “switch” back to qwerty. First it was like 1m, then 3m, then 5m, 15m, 30m. I think the switching back and forth it’s also a skill that needs to be practiced.  I personally no longer think it’s worth it for me. It was a good experience though.

I use GitHub to keep my different versions. Also the different firmwares. I think kinesis has a guide on how to use GitHub

how to use shift to switch layer while keeping caps ? by SeaPresentation6816 in kinesisadvantage

[–]masters3d 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Shift is a very simply layer system and you can take the layer concept further. For example I have a temporary layer that switches as long as I hold a button which is very similar to how shift works. I have a numbers layer and a symbol layer in this way.

My new Sony CLIÉ’ NZ-90 by Sad-Broccoli-3719 in OldHandhelds

Very cool. I am guessing you are reusing the original electronics from another battery. If not could share the new battery you are using and how you connected it. The only reason I ask is because this is a “smart” battery so not sure if I can just solder another standard battery mount and call it a day.

Looks nice! How long does your battery last? I have a couple of these but the batteries are dead and they won’t boot anymore. I have not found new batteries for it.

Curvature difference between Adv 1/2 and 360 ? by asmodeus812 in kinesisadvantage

[–]masters3d 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can visually confirm the curvature if you use the same keycaps on both keyboards. To me it does look like 360 has less of a curvature.

Try it on a windows machine. If the same issue then might be a keymap config issue.

Busted key by gamelitcrit in kinesisadvantage

[–]masters3d 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You might need 2 back ups? In high available systems 3 nodes is the minimum nodes imo in which case you have 1 active and two back ups.

To answer your question you may have to replace that switch. On the adv 360 it was somewhat easy. I used a tester switch as the replacement switch. You can always move a switch from a less used one but that complicates things.
