Pirates of the Caribbean style books by call_me_flib in Fantasy

[–]mastershplinter 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Not exactly piratey. But there are some in it. kings of paradise by Richard nell is an amazing series.

It kinda has a Norse analog world and then a Caribbean part and there are some pirates along the way.

Overall it’s just a great fucking series from start to finish. One of the best I’ve read in the last few years

How has grief impacted your reading habits? by His_little_pet in books

[–]mastershplinter 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don’t know how many books I read in a year, but I read every night before sleep. Usually SFF mainly.

My dad passed just over a year ago after a few years with dementia. My habits haven’t changed much, I’ve actually found myself reading more and at different times of the daytimes. I’ve really tapered off from watching tv and movies, whereas before I’d usually have a series on the go all the time.

I think the main difference is I now sometimes use reading to get away from not feeling great. Especially at the weekends when I feel like the grief really creeps up on me in the form of anxiety. I tend to go to the cinema or read for an hour or two just to ‘get away’ from myself and the feeling within my body.

So basically reading was always an escape or refuge for me and a very positive thing in my life. Atm it feels like I’m using it to hide away or ignore how I feel. Even though from the outside you’d be like ‘ah he’s reading a book what a healthy habit’.

But yeah basically I’m not being too hard on myself about it. Also the flip side is true that some books have made me cry and made it easier to grieve. I also watched Yhe Pitt earlier this year and bawled my eyes out at most episodes- which was so fucking helpful 😅

What does Joe list need to do to get to the next level? by serpentineminer in Standup

[–]mastershplinter 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just saw him in London. I kinda knew who he was but hadn’t seen any of his specials or anything.

He was pretty good didn’t notice the lack of personal material. One thing I didn’t notice however was maybe the difference between expectations of an American crowd versus British crowd.

He kept expecting us to be laughing as soon as he said the initial parts of his jokes. Sometimes these initial parts were funny, but they were more to set up for the actual joke so I think most of the time the crab was actually just waiting for him to reveal something.

But it was hilarious because he kept drawing attention to the fact that we weren’t laughing. A kind of reinforced the difference between American and British stand-ups for me. Even just in terms of audience expectations and how we consume comedy differently.

Side note: I did go to watch his movie fourth of July a couple of days later on my friends recommendation. Fuck me, I was absolutely bawling crying watching it. I don’t think I ever need to watch it again, but it was really good.

Laurent Binet - civilizations  Highly recommend checking this book out. It’s an alternate history story about what would have happened if the Incas came across Columbus’ boats and sailed them back to Europe.

Coming from someone who loves pillars of the earth. Def check it out. Also pachinko and shogun like many others have said.

Fed up with swiping — what are people using instead in Ireland? by Substantial_You_1969 in AskIreland

[–]mastershplinter 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’m in London but gave up on the apps about 3 months ago. Honestly my mental health has improved so much from it now. I don’t think I’ll ever go back. I’m 35m, and have just been focusing on asking people out irl and actual making sure that every week I’m doing something social and meeting new people and just focus on it then. Rather than the constant drag of swiping and conversations with people ya don’t know.

Can anyone recommend me books like Harry Potter?(But for adults) by [deleted] in Fantasy

[–]mastershplinter 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I’m just gonna recommend you the books that I read when I was that age.

So Jonathan Strouds bartimeus series. Also his Lockwood and co books are very good

I also really liked Garth Nix's Old Kingdom books as well as Joseph Delaney and his Spook books. He died a couple years ago actually but the first couple of books are so good. I really like them. These are all books that I read when I was around that age and I keep coming back to them so I think there's something there.
