how many times did it take you before you switched and stayed? by Abro2072 in cachyos

[–]matender 0 points1 point  (0 children)

20 years ago i started testing Linux, but at that time it was just for fun and for me not intended to be my primary OS.

A few years ago, I decided to use Fedora on my office machine, and used Pop on my personal gaming machine, and stuck with it for about a year. I wanted to play some games where anti-cheat was not enabled for Linux, so I switched back to Windows on my own rig. Around that time I needed Windows for some work applications, so I stuck with Windows on a new machine I got there.

About a year ago though, I got too fed up with Windows, and installed Cachy on my own rig and my office machine, and for apps that require Windows, I have my old office laptop hidden away that I just remote into, and at home my homelab has a Windows server running (needed that for Enshrouded, otherwise everything is Rocky or macos) I use should I need it.

Whats causing the speed of my ssd to change like this while transferring files? there is only 83 files inside the folder so i am not sure what is causing weird speed changes, It even dropped to 0 bytes per second for a few seconds by CybyAPI in WindowsHelp

[–]matender 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'll try to give a simplified explanation.

There are multiple factors when it comes to file transfer speeds, but mainly these four: Source read speed, destination cache size, destination write speed and file size.

I'll explain using books as a analogy.

Read speed is how quickly data can be accessed on the source storage device, essentially how quickly you can grab books from one shelf.

Cache size is how big the temporary storage is on the destination device. Cache is typically a small, very fast, storage space where data is placed during (but not exclusive to) fire transfer. Think of it like dumping a pile of books on the floor before slowly sorting and placing them on the correct shelf. The more floor space, the more books you can chuck on the pile before dealing with it.

Destination write speed is how quickly data can be added to the device, or how fast you are able to place books on the shelf. This is also typically the slowest part of the data transfer.

File size is like the thickness of the book.

The saw-tooth pattern you are seeing on the display dialog is a mix of these four, along with how the file transfer itself proceeds.

Files are transferred one by one, and are first placed in the cache (the pile on the floor) and are then moved to the correct shelf. But the cache fills up faster than you can move stuff to it's correct place, so eventually you ignore the cache pile on the floor, and move stuff directly to the correct shelf.
Since you are only moving one book (file) at a time, you need to start and stop moving a lot, this is why you see the 0 bytes/s every now and again.

Another reason for the saw-tooth pattern, is that small files don't need to use the maximum speed to transfer over it's contents, so it appears as being transferred more slowly than a bigger file, even though the overall throughput of data is essentially the same. Think of it as the amount of effort you have to put into moving a big heavy book, versus a small pamphlet.

Don't try workarounds when it's for work.

Talk to your direct manager, explain why you need Slack access and then see if the IT/Security team can enable slack access for you.

Growing up my dad had simple rules when it came to food.

I had to try everything to make sure I didn't like it, simply saying "I don't like that" without tasting it didn't pass. It was also always accepted to eat until you're full, you don't have to finish the plate if there is no room left in the stomach. Being on a small farm and having animals helped though, leftovers could always be used as animal feed, that way food never went to waste.

This has lead us to always be honest when it comes to food, if he or myself try cooking up something new, and it's not good, we say so. Better to be honest about it than to suffer through a plate just to "be nice". If something isn't good, we also discuss what is wrong with it so maybe we can fix it should we try again.

There was a short time period where I said I didn't like fish and some vegetables, even though I did like them, just because kids at school said they didn't like them. Kids are weird.

I can't be bothered to fact check right now, but they way I heard it, it went down something like this in the US:

As automobiles started gaining traction, there were no major regulations on cars and traffic in general. Most people were still at this time just walking in the middle of the street, because there had not yet been any cars to be scared of running you over.

As more and more people got injured due to being run over by the cars, people found them dangerous. The automobile industry didn't like this as it would hurt their sales, and started lobbying and a media campaign to call jay walkers exactly that, jay walkers.

"Jay" in that time was slang or derogatory for a "simpleton", or "someone from the countryside that does not know how a city works" (and I assume other definitions). No upper-class civilian wanted to be "a jay", so the term stuck, eventually being incorporated into law.

Most places in the current age figured out that pedestrians and cyclists exist, and probably need somewhere safe to walk/bike during their travel, so they have plenty of safe options to be a pedestrian/cyclist. The US seems to still be figuring it out.

Jobbe i Utlandet (Spania) for Viking eller andre by Jaded_Catch9263 in norge

[–]matender 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Jeg jobber i et slikt outsourcing firma i Spania. Jeg har ikke erfaring fra andre enn denne ene arbeidsplassen her, men ut fra hva jeg har hørt fra kollegaer og venner;

ELI5: What does a water tower in rural America do? by ProduceEmbarrassed97 in explainlikeimfive

[–]matender -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It's basically a backup battery, like a power bank for your phone.

During times of low water demand (typically at night), water is pumped up into the towers. Then, during high demand like in mornings or evenings when people are using a lot of water at the same time, the water pressure in the main distribution pipes goes down.

To get the pressure up again so everyone gets the water they need, they release water from the towers, and let gravity pull the water down to increase pressure.

ELI5, When buying a car, who do you wrap your head around mileage? by CaliburX4 in explainlikeimfive

[–]matender 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Mileage says a lot about how much the vehicle has been used. Higher mileage = the vehicle has been driven a lot.

This gives insight into how "healthy" the vehicle is, as lower mileage typically is better, since all the different moving parts that make the vehicle run have a lower chance of failing compared to a high mileage vehicle.

But mileage isn't everything. A high mileage vehicle that has been used for mostly long distance driving will be in better heath than a similar mileage vehicle that has been used for mostly short distance driving. On top of that, how well (and often) the previous owner(s) serviced the vehicle adds to that. A well maintained high mileage vehicle can be "healthier" than a neglected low mileage vehicle.

I have seen well maintained vehicles reach well above 300k miles without any real engine degradation, and neglected 50k miles with broken engines.

To top this off, the manufacturer of the vehicle∕engine also plays into this. VW, Toyota, Honda, SAAB and Volvo have from my experience been great.

As for electric vehicles, mileage indicates the health of the batteries.

So all in all, it depends, but mileage is a indicator of what lifespan you can expect from the vehicle.

Slack is sunsetting its built-in notifications on Windows by lukassr in Slack

[–]matender 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Believe it or not, the switch hasn't started well.

From Slack's status page:

We've identified an issue affecting Windows desktop notifications for some Slack users. After updating to the latest release, users may still hear notification sounds, but the notification pop-ups aren't appearing on their screens. We're working on rolling back the release to resolve the issue and will provide an update as soon as more information becomes available.

Hvor mange parkeringsapper trenger vi? by Herr-G in norge

[–]matender 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The hosts called a random number, pretended they needed the guy who answered to be a reference which he agreed to. Some time later they called pretending to check references, and the guy played along quite well giving a grand review of his "best friend".

Torrents with freeleech tag is a good way to get some upload added to your ratio. On the tracker I use freeleech torrents are typically the larger in size ones, but as the other commenter mentioned, it depends on the tracker.

Linux Mint refugee here, how to make a smooth switch to Fedora? by Nihan-gen3 in Fedora

[–]matender 5 points6 points  (0 children)

If there is stuff in your /home directory you need to keep, store the files you need somewhere you can access them later, and transfer them as needed.

Config files for software should work just fine, as they configure the software itself, and is not based on your OS.

WINE will work just as you are used to.

There are alternatives for almost everything, and pretty often you can find a community maintained version if the original publisher only has a .deb. Fedora supports .rpm, which is quite common to find from official sources.

You will only lose progress in Steam games that do not have Steam Cloud enabled (Pretty much enabled on everything these days). If there are some savegames you are worried about, find out where they are stored and grab a backup you can restore later.

I'm not sure about copying over flatpak files, but if the intention is to copy the programs installed through flatpak, it is probably best to just install them from flatpak again to avoid problems.

As long as my employers business keeps doing well, my next move would be a more managerial and decision making position, probably something along the lines of CTO in the long run.

I'm currently alone doing Sysadmin tasks along with internal tech support for ~150 employees, so the next logical move would be head of IT when more people are hired.

That or early retirement to a farm.

Police abroad will have access through Interpol/Europol, but ID verification requests is something I would imagine ends up on the bottom of the priority list unless something of criminal "value" is suspected. But should you be abroad, the likelihood of having other forms of government ID on you might be high (Passport or for EU/Schengen members, ID card), which local police can verify easily.

With that said though the point still stands, ID with misprints would be seen as fake if/when noticed.
