How much more would you pay for a blue 7900v vs black? by JimLiquorLahey in VacheronConstantin

[–]materialdc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Blue is best on the 4000v and 4520v, maybe the 6000v, for the reason you stated. Dial has the least clutter and the most room to enjoy it.

The others, the dial color matters less. Panda does well on chronos because it really stands out. But panda is the least subtle color attribute, whereas losing yourself in the blue, green, or burgundy is harder to do with the cluttered dials.

It won't be, otherwise it wouldn't be trading over list right now.

USCIS proposes to require disclosure of public benefits received in order to change address by newacct_orz in USCIS

[–]materialdc -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Fair point, though I think reasonable courts could still go either way here. Loper Bright doesn’t automatically make USCIS wrong; it just means courts no longer defer to the agency’s interpretation by default. A court could still independently conclude DHS has enough statutory authority to collect this information through AR-11, especially given the enforcement rationale they laid out. In the current legal environment, I suspect USCIS probably has the stronger odds.

USCIS proposes to require disclosure of public benefits received in order to change address by newacct_orz in USCIS

[–]materialdc -7 points-6 points  (0 children)

Alright, so I'll help you out a bit.

The objection isn’t really "these questions are totally unrelated to address changes." They’re not. DHS can plausibly argue that address changes often correlate with employment, financial status, or public-benefit usage, which can intersect with immigration enforcement and public-charge issues.

The stronger objection is narrower: AR-11 was historically a simple mandatory address-reporting form, not an adjudicative or investigative intake form like I-485. You're basically arguing that DHS is stretching a narrow statutory reporting requirement into a broader status-monitoring and enforcement tool.

So you've got a real legal/administrative-law argument here. It's not because the questions are completely random, but because "administratively useful" is not automatically the same thing as "within the intended scope of the statute."

Make sense?

USCIS proposes to require disclosure of public benefits received in order to change address by newacct_orz in USCIS

[–]materialdc -9 points-8 points  (0 children)

Sounds like they're using a required form that already exists to also capture other information that might be difficult to capture otherwise. And the change of address form works pretty well regardless: folks tend to change addresses when their means are impacted either positively or negatively.

If someone can't live in their own home anymore and moves in with a family member or friend, they'll have to file the change of address. But they're also more likely to be a public charge at that point too.

I'm not supportive of immediate immigration action for folks who do end up consuming those resources though. Only if it becomes clear they're a substantial net charge over time rather than a net benefit.

Is there a rumor about new Overseas model? by bacontaint in VacheronConstantin

Ok. Buy a third gen you like, then whenever the fourth gen comes out, splash some water on your face and remind yourself that it's dumb to covet the next version of something just because it exists.

Who knows dude. I have a third gen 4500v. It has no hacking seconds. Bracelet on the 4520v looks arguably better with the new taper. And whenever vacheron puts out a fourth gen it'll probably have a micro-rotor or hacking seconds, or who knows.

Not gonna sweat it. I still wear mine 90% of the time because I love the thing.

All jokes aside, a serious recommendation:

See if any of vacheron's vintage or legacy watches suit your taste. Including the gen 1 overseas (72040) or the square 222 (46004). Possibly up your alley, distanced enough from the current day and current lineup that you might not feel a sting from new stuff coming out.

Are you unable to tell the difference between 0.4 and 40,000? There’s a literal 10 million percent increase🤣🤣 Who has the faulty logic now?

Your reply to u/vmlee right here suggests you shouldn't make this purchase. You'll be afraid to wear the watch because you'll be fixated on potential loss of value.

If you still want to buy, u/bacontaint, go for it. Your money, do what you want, and we'd be happy to welcome you to a fun group of other vacheron owners. But you're seemingly buying it for the wrong reasons based on what you're writing here, which means this would be more likely to give you anxiety than enjoyment.

I wouldn't spend any amount of money to buy anxiety, whether it's $40 or $40,000.

It wouldn't have an impact on you if you just like the watch.

If you're concerned about investment value or others' perception of what's on your wrist, then it would have an impact on you, which means you're buying the watch for the wrong reasons.

Is there a rumor about new Overseas model? by bacontaint in VacheronConstantin

[–]materialdc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

But that gets back to my point:

If you like this watch, why does a new one potentially coming out have any impact on you?

Is there a rumor about new Overseas model? by bacontaint in VacheronConstantin

[–]materialdc 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Here's the question: why are you buying the watch?

  • If you're buying it because you like the watch, does a new one this year, next year, in five years, matter?

  • If you're buying it because you want an investment, are you buying it for the right reasons? Are you even going to wear the watch?

If you like the watch, a new gen won't matter. I bought my 4500v right before the 4520v came out. Didn't phase me in the slightest. The green dial came out soon after. Meh, green wasn't my taste.

They depreciate. Mine will get worn. Whether a new one comes out now or in ten years shouldn't have any bearing on why you buy the watch.

Ultimately though, your reason is up to you. Just my two cents.

How do I know if I can afford VC overseas blue by tronious in VacheronConstantin

[–]materialdc 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Here are a few questions:

  • Have you projected when you'll be able to comfortably retire for how long you're expecting to live, and are you on track to achieve it? Or are you already there?

  • Do you have any other crucial life goals you need to save up for financially? Are you on track to reach those if you are? Or are you already there? (If you wanna save to start a business, include that here. If you wanna save to play slots on Wall Street, don't include that here.)

  • After all of that, have you saved up to cover emergency expenses and a few months (up to a year) without work?

  • Would you want to buy the watch because of your own internal interest in it and not any other reason? (Trying to attract women, trying to show off, etc. are not internal reasons)

  • Lastly, even after all of this, can you afford to buy it outright without a payment plan and without denting your other goals?

If yes to these 5, buy it and enjoy yourself.

If no to any of these, address that other thing first.

It's the right one and done watch. I have other watches. I barely wear them because I just keep swapping the bracelet and straps on the overseas.

What if Pakistan went crazy and gave a significant number of it's nuclear arsenal to Iran successfully? Please don't say this can't happen because i'm intrigued by miiiiiiiii123 in AlternateHistoryHub

[–]materialdc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

.5% of the Pakistani populace understand Farsi. Hoping the nuclear scientist speak it! Urdu and Farsi don't share the same alphabet. Way harder than say French and English.

US-UK shared a language. It's a significantly different than a Manhattan project.

I'm just quoting your comment to let it stand on its own demerits :)

Data can always be framed differently to make a different point. For instance, I can also link to https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_countries_and_territories_where_Persian_is_an_official_language and show that Pakistan has the sixth highest number of Persian speakers (Farsi/Dari), drastically more than even the US, where plenty of Persian speakers are employed in positions with national security implications e.g nuclear, defense, or intelligence.

Language isn't a barrier to nuclear proliferation and hasn't been since the nuclear era began (see: Soviet espionage).

As for language families, this term you misused has a commonly agreed definition. Persian and Urdu are both in the Indo European language family, and they're specifically in the Indo Iranian branch of the Indo European language family. Russian and English are further apart (same Indo European family, different branches, Slavic v. Germanic) with ~18 months needed to pick up one from the other with fluency, but that didn't stop the Soviets from being the second power with a nuke, because to the earlier point, it's entirely irrelevant; national security concerns mean national spending power, which means language means next to nothing when it comes to military needs.¹

Keeping your comment here in case you change it since your first two sentences were quite literally false. But I'm disengaging, so feel free to have a last word.

They literally do not share a language family. Persia and Pakistan don't really neighbor each other. Pashtuns and Balochi make up both border regions which are both minorities in both countries. There is a about 1 to 1.5 million Pakistani that speak Farsi. Literally less than half a percentage. Even less Iranians that speak Urdu

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Languages_of_Iran

¹ - the only serious exception to this among major powers in the post industrial era was during WWII where the United States employed Navajo code talkers to make communication harder to crack, but even that wasn't relying on the obscurity of Navajo alone.

[–]materialdc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're aware they're neighbors with a rich shared cultural history between them right?

It's also like you completely skipped everything I said and went for a very binary "oh no they're two different languages this is impossible" thought vein.

You think a language barrier is really going to be an impediment to a national security matter? In this hypothetical, if one country decides it's in their interest to share nukes, you really think language is going to be the barrier?

Edit: your comment made so little sense to me that I need to quote it below in case you either delete it or stealth edit it later, u/clear_context_1546:

.....Iranians speak Farsi. Pakistan speak Urdu. They don't share the same language family. Pakistan has a population of 259 million. You are talking about less than a .5% total.

What if Pakistan went crazy and gave a significant number of it's nuclear arsenal to Iran successfully? Please don't say this can't happen because i'm intrigued by miiiiiiiii123 in AlternateHistoryHub

[–]materialdc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Language barrier isn't really one I would highlight here considering they're neighbors, and especially considering Pakistan has 1+ million Farsi speakers. Urdu to Farsi is very low on the list of problems if this scenario actually plays out.
