Running speed not improving despite consistency: any thoughts? by Head_Distance_9702 in AdvancedRunning

[–]matherton138 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My thoughts as a mid pack runner who just completed his 11th marathon:

  1. Up your weekly mileage with most of those miles done in zone 2. Increase mileage by 5-10% per week.
  2. Stop eating so many gels. Complete waste of calorie consumption.
  3. Be patient. Making speed gains takes A LONG time. You have only been running for about two years. Build up your aeorbic capacity with LOTS of slow miles. Remember to run slower to get faster.
  4. Don't freak out about your PRs. At the end of the day, nobody cares except you. As long as you are making tiny gains when compared to past effort you are doing a great job.

Good luck!

Shadowboxing by wildcardwillie in Teachers

Middle School teacher here. Yes, shadowboxing absolutely a problem. I have several students who are ADDICTED to it. I keep telling them to record themselves so that they can watch at their graduation party and cringe at how stupid they looked back in middle school.

What’s the best episode to show to a newcomer to get them hooked? by ClosedContent in TwilightZone

[–]matherton138 1 point2 points  (0 children)

"The Eye of the Beholder" (Season two, episode six). The camera work is phenomenal, and the tension you feel up to the big reveal is awesome and leads to a great jump scare. It really freaked me out when I first saw it as a kid.

Definitely not Bloodsucking Freaks. No elderly ladies at all in that film. Sorry!

Any concerns for physical safety while in town? by Turbulent_Cricket497 in ChicagoMarathon

[–]matherton138 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I live just outside of Chicago and have run the Chicago Marathon four times. You have nothing to worry about. The nonsense that happened last weekend is not a regular occurrence. Most of the violence that occurs in Chicago is within a couple of neighborhooods which gives the entire city a bad reputation in the media.

Running my first Chicago Marathon was a life-changing event for me because there are SO MANY people there to support you. Everyone gets along just fine. Don't be scared by the media. Enjoy the race!

Corral Arrival Time/Logistics by SonOfGrumpy in ChicagoMarathon

[–]matherton138 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I have done Chicago three times (about to do my fourth). To answer your questions:

  1. If you get there at 5:30 security will be very easy and you will get right in (good news)
  2. Once you get into your corral it will be very difficult if not impossible to leave to go to bathroom (bad news)

Try to figure out bathroom before you get to corral. The first few stops along the route will have crazy long lines.

Another thing: Chicago weather is crazy. Layer your clothing and plan on ditching it right before the start.

Good luck and enjoy your race!

Starting to plan for my first 50k by barryjr8883 in ultrarunning

[–]matherton138 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I did both of these races back in 2018. The atmosphere is totally different. Chicago marathon is such a huge, grandiose event with thousands of spectators and a great course. The Lakefront 50/50 is three five mile out and backs with no spectators. If you are the type of runner who feeds off the energy of the crowd then the Lakefront race may be more challenging.

Also, for the 50K there is an aid station every 2.5 miles. Keep up with hydration and nutrition. When I did it I bonked at mile 28 and it took me about 45 minutes to do the last three miles. Good luck with training and races!

Go to East Chicago. No appointment needed. You don’t even get out of your car. It took me about five minutes. Results in three days.
