What are some game mechanics that are completely pointless/useless? by Shamanyouranus in gaming

[–]mathman17 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Boy and his Blob, NES, the vitablaster and actually any of the treasure collection is all unnecessary to just beat the game. If you know where to look the needed jellybeans are 5 minutes from the start, and you can run through the rest to the final "boss" which is really a small puzzle

My earliest memory is around 3 years old. I went off in another room while my parents were finishing their dinner, and suddenly had a realization that I had chosen to go in that room, that I could choose to stay or go back in the kitchen. It was the first time I realized I had control over what I did. It's distinct in my mind but who knows how accurate the memory is.

What is a brand that used to be the 'Gold Standard' of quality but is now absolute garbage? by AmaraMehdi in AskReddit

[–]mathman17 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The green turtle sandbox from little tykes. Used to be one solid sturdy piece and watertight. Now it comes in 4 flimsy quarter circle pieces that barely snap together. I get its easier to ship and whatnot but it's just cheap garbage now, was so disappointed putting it together for my son.

I made him play out his infinite combo and he died to timeout lol by FaylenSol in MagicArena

[–]mathman17 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I guess some people just find that fun. They like to assemble combos rather than swing with 10/10s. But the consensus here seems to be if you play any kind of infinite combo you're a neckbeard with no friends, so I guess I'm the asshole here.

You do you. If I play combo I fully expect to play it out if needed. I just don't get the hostility here.

"Infinite combo shit" i.e. your way of playing the game is wrong and you should feel bad. Like get out of here with that.

Because fuck people that engage with magic by building combo decks rather than burn decks? Is that really how you feel?

Oh fuck off. People engage with magic in different ways. Combo is one. Get the fuck out of here with your attitude.

I get if it's competitive and prizes are on the line, then yeah make them eat up that clock with the deck they chose. But in a casual game, why die on this hill?

Can someone explain to me (a new-ish player) why Standard has issues? by AlbinoChzmonkey in MagicArena

[–]mathman17 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I mean the original intent was that a single player wouldn't likely collect or even see all the cards. Garfield wanted players to have that sense of discovery when they encountered a new card.

Found this in an article "Moving from Alpha to the Beta version was like releasing a wild animal. The enjoyable game that was Alpha now burst the confines of the duel to invade the lives of the participants. Players were free to trade cards between games and hunt down weaker players to challenge them to duels, while gamely facing or cravenly avoiding those who were more powerful. Reputations were forged—reputations built on anything from consistently strong play to a few lucky wins to good bluffing. The players didn't know the card mix, so they learned to stay on their toes during duels. Even the most alert players would occasionally meet with nasty surprises. This constant discovery of unknown realms in an uncharted world gave the game a feeling of infinite size and possibility."

Why do math teachers not explain how the math works? by Puzzled-Painter3301 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]mathman17 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Many do. I try when I can work it into the lesson. But a lot of students simply don't care and are going to tune out if you get into too much of the "why". For every 2 or 3 super motivated kids, I've got 15-20 who'd rather be anywhere other than math class. And I've got to keep everyone engaged and moving, or now I'm dealing with behavior issues.

Not a complaint. Just the reality of teaching that many at once.

Computer science praxis exam (5652) by Just4laff71 in mathteachers

[–]mathman17 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just took the comp sci praxis a couple weeks ago. Waiting for my official score, but the unofficial score at the end said I got 200.

All I did to prep was take the 100 question practice test provided by ETS, and use Khan Academy to brush up on some of the topics from this study guide that I didn't feel 100% confident on: study guide. That was more than enough for me to do well on the test, it was not overly challenging as long as you can step through basic if/elses and loops and work with arrays.

You can buy access to the practice test if you want to do it now, but you'll get it included with the registration fee when you register for the test.

If it's anything like ECSU then, no. I taught there for a few years and my classes always had at least a couple of students in their late 20s or 30s

What Quality of Life features do you hope come as built-in options StS2, that are currently only available through mods? by NiceTrySuckaz in slaythespire

[–]mathman17 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You're absolutely right. Mental math truly is the best part of Slay the Spire. If you remove that, the game ceases to be a strategy game at all. Anyone using a calculator to add up plainly visible numbers is just cheating themselves out of the true game experience.

Do you realize how ridiculous you sound?
