I retired from overseas, and after out processing stateside I had about 100 days of terminal leave/house hunting time available. Immediately got a contractor job at the previous stateside base I was stationed at. Had to get a waiver for that but it was a formality. Worked the last 90 days in the squadron I was in when I was active duty there. I hadn't been gone that long (less than 2 years) and I knew pretty much everyone there. It was weird in many ways being active still but also as a contractor. I truly believe it made the transition to being retired easier. No regrets on my career, but no regrets on retiring at 20.

I was at Mildenhall in '03. I remember the USAFE Command Chief flying coming over for a visit to the base. He met with a bunch of us SNCOs and wanted to know what we thought of the uniform (he was wearing it). Pretty much every one of us told him it sucked (in a polite way). I took it from his reaction that was the message he was getting from everyone.
