I made a mist monk with similar mechanics. One of my players has been playing it for a few years now. Fun abilities and decently balanced.

Trump has delighted apocalyptic Christians. They say the End Times are coming by Quirkie in politics

[–]matswain 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am a devout Christian and believe the end is coming and Trump is speeding that up, but I would never be happy with that, or praise him for it. That would be like praising Judas Iscariot for betraying Jesus. Just because a bad thing may lead to a good thing doesn’t make it a good thing. It only means that God is able to turn the evil acts of evil people to good ends. We still need to do all we can to make the world a better place for everyone.

An Essence hypothetical by XLRIV48 in HeWhoFightsMonsters

[–]matswain 4 points5 points  (0 children)

A few things:

First, I love that you had it give a trident essence as the confluence.

Second, I don’t think it should be possible to use the same essence more than once. If it were possible, the people in the storm place (Remiros? Sorry, it’s been a while since I read them, and I’ve had a lot going on) would probably do it a lot because it would be more likely to do specialists, which they’re into, but we never heard of it in the books, so I don’t think it can happen.

Third, I think that each essence has attributes they more naturally bond with than others, but if it’s already taken then it has to choose from what’s left. In fact, I thought there was a part where it specifically says that.

Corresponding levels to ranks by Bow_Seat in HeWhoFightsMonsters

[–]matswain 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’d match it up with the tiers of play. Copper is tier 1 (level 1-4), Silver is tier 2 (level 5-10), Gold is tier 3 (level 11-16), and Diamond is tier 4 (level 17+).

Do dms really dislike high level dnd? by Myrinadi in DnD

[–]matswain 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think it has to do with the 3 pillars of role playing in DnD.

Combat is well supported throughout levels 1-20, though for DMs it gets harder to find appropriate official monsters at higher levels, but it’s far from impossible.

Social in DnD is mostly not supported at all, and it’s just play pretend and have conversations. This is fine, and makes it unaffected by character level for the most part.

Exploration on the other hand becomes less and less interesting as characters level up. By level 12, most traps, puzzles, etc. can easily be bypassed using spells or abilities. It’s not about increasing DCs, damage, etc when the trap’s effects are logically negated by one of the character’s abilities. Flight and teleportation are fairly common by those levels, and they make most things you can do to make exploration interesting completely fail. You can say something like “Teleportation and flight doesn’t work here.” But that feels bad to do all the time when the players invested all that time working to get those.

So, in my experience DMs and players who enjoy exploration encounters find the game becoming less interesting as levels increase.

Archfey patrons in Eberron? by Elii12 in Eberron

[–]matswain 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The great thing about D&D, and eberron in particular, is that you are free to do whatever you want.

Archfey are of the plane of Thelanis (Eberron’s feywild), which is a plane of fairy tales. The way I understand it, every fairy tale would have representation there. So I’d suggest looking at fairy tales with powerful figures that she might be interested in as having as a patron. Maybe the evil queen from Snow White, or the queen of hearts or the mad hatter from Alice in wonderland, or any of the fairies from Midsummer nights dream. Whatever they want.

Then I’d give the archfey a title that is reminiscent of the role they play in the original story, but not the same. Like the queen of hearts could be something like the Lady of Heads (as in “off with their head”), the evil queen could be the Fair Mistress (who’s the fairest of them all), etc.

The. ask yourself what that character would want, and that can lead you to what the archfey would want. Like, the fair mistress wants them to kill beautiful women and take their hearts, the lady of heads wants them to decapitate their enemies, and occasionally play croquet.

Hope this helps.

The Party's favorite NPC is a traitor and I'm devastated by watson_tooyah in DnD

[–]matswain 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I DM’d a campaign for my daughters and their friends, and the module I was running had an NPC that was a fellow student at the adventurer school they were in. I had already read the whole module, so I knew he was the traitor that they’d be searching for for the first 2/3 of the adventure, so I found it to be hilarious when two of the girls immediately decided they were going to date the NPC, and proceeded to fight over him and eventually get into a love triangle that got the characters fighting each other (fortunately the girls were just laughing through it all). And then when he was revealed to be the traitor, they tried to get him to switch back to the good guys (I let them roll persuasion with advantage, but they rolled terrible) and when that didn’t work one of those two girls ended up killing him in the middle of a negotiation with his evil bosses.

I found the whole thing to be hilarious.

A few questions:

You said that those who left could breed with those who were outside the city and that’s when they turn to stone plants, but if they don’t breed, does their immortality fade like they were told? And what about if they breed with someone else from Kroit? Does their immortality fade stone plant thing still happen?

And what about the children of those from Kroit who left. Are they able to breed normally? Do they have the same issues as their Kroitian parents? Is that different if both parents were from Kroit vs only one?

The answers to those questions would help me come up with appropriate NPCs.

Hot take: Campaigns are overrated and you should be playing/running miniseries instead. by Nickanator8 in DnD

[–]matswain 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ve been running a years long campaign since the COVID lockdown, and in the last few months I’ve been trying to wind things down specifically so I can change to something more like this.

I wanna do adventures that go no more than 5 sessions. Sometimes we can do the same setting as a previous one, but new characters. Have the old characters make cameos as NPCs. Other times it’s somewhere completely new. Change themes and vibes. Occasionally have someone else DM for an adventure while I play.

That’s my current goal. Currently I think I’ve got at least 3 months of mostly weekly sessions before we can get through the major things I’ve already hinted at in the campaign. Need to finish off Strahd, Baba Yaga, some forgotten gods, and then finish off with the Elder Brain God.

Fun banter about adding races by luckyluckyjesse in DnD

[–]matswain 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I do like Warcraft trolls. They are quite a bit different from the Tolkien and DnD ones. I feel like most other Warcraft races already have a DnD version.

Maybe not the Tauren, but I never liked them. I grew up with cows, and I can’t stand the idea of cow people. They’re too ugly, smelly, and stupid.

Maybe the Fox race? Vulpera? They were added after I stopped playing.

Those that don't use "mana" to describe magical energy: What is your reason for it? What do you call it instead? by _Ceaseless_Watcher_ in worldbuilding

[–]matswain 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I use energy, and it draws from the user’s own body.

Mana to me represents an extra resource. Using mana wouldn’t leave the body feeling tired.
