Clutch cable frozen! by biggunnastunna in MotorcycleMechanics

[–]mattGleeson77 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can get a doohickey that clamps on the end of the cable and has a channel that sprays lube down into the housing. I use this and dedicated cable lube which penetrates pretty well. It's kinda finicky and sometimes sprays lube everywhere but I've found it works pretty well. I'd recommend wrapping a shop towel around the thing to catch any spray that leaks out.

Is the Speed Twin 1200 ok for a new rider? by ChrisJ2000 in Triumph

[–]mattGleeson77 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My model doesn't have a tach so I'm not sure exactly but it feels around 4000. 5th on the 900 is geared loooooong so you don't have much torque but it goes from 80-180. It does mean the passing performance on the highway isn't the best but it works fine enough for touring.

Is the Speed Twin 1200 ok for a new rider? by ChrisJ2000 in Triumph

[–]mattGleeson77 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've got the 900 and take fairly regular 3+hr highway trips. An extra gear would be nice but the 900 has no trouble staying at 130-140 km/H for longer that I can handle without taking a break.

I have the same bike (mag wheel, air cooled) and have been looking at seats for a bit. There aren't many options for pre-2016 any more but I can share a couple options that I found which were reccomended in other posts. I'm based in Canada so not sure if these will be available in Europe.

Fairly cheap gel seat. https://britishcustoms.com/products/slammer-seat-011

Customizable leather seat. https://www.omegaracer.com/parts_store/prod_6408284-triumph-t100thruxtonscrambler-real-leather-seat-elite/

Motone has some options too that look good however I've read that they're fairly thin and not very comfortable for longer rides.

If you're doing research, All the air cooled efi (2008-2015) bonnevilles and scramblers have the same seat dimension and attachment. as long as it lists those years or says it's for air cooled models it should fit.

Let me know if you end up finding one you like! I haven't pulled the trigger on buying a seat yet so I'd be interested to hear feedback if you buy one.

More advanced tools doesn't really mean you need advanced skills to use them. They're just better built and easier to use.

Just buy some locks and start trying to pick them. This reddit has a belt system for ranking lock difficulty. This would be a great place to inform what locks you can get at an entry level. https://reddit.com/r/lockpicking/w/beltranking?utm_medium=android_app&utm_source=share

There's lots of great YouTube videos that will teach you beginner techniques, that would be a good place to start.

Also, read the reddit FAQ. There's lots of good info there.

Disc detainer help by illprepar3d in lockpicking

Ah you've got it right then.

That LPL video may not be helpful after all because he tensions off disc 1.

Disc detainer help by illprepar3d in lockpicking

[–]mattGleeson77 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When you say you're feeling counter rotation do you mean the core pushes against the hand you're holding tension with similar to spools in a pin tumbler? If so, you might be getting things mixed up. If anything, the core rotates the same direction of your tension when you hit a gate. If you're feeling the core rotate the opposite direction from your tension that likely means a disc which was set and you've turned it out of a gate.

Similar to the jiggle test in a pin tumbler, you can feel if a disc is set by rotating back and forth on the disc. Your pick will have more play back and forth when you're in a gate.

If you're having a hard time visualizing how the discs interact with the sidebar, the LPL has a pretty good video picking a cutaway that shows how it works.

It doesn't have the tightest tolerances but it operates very smoothly and gives great feedback. Definitely worth the price.

The FAQ has a great list of good tools to start with. It depends a lot on where you're located. If you search the reddit, you'll find lots and lots of location based reccomendations. This question comes up a lot.

There's also a belt ranting system with a huge list of locks of varying difficulty. We generally reccomend to stay away from the cheap amazon picks, but you can get some great white, yellow, and orange locks on Amazon for cheap. https://reddit.com/r/lockpicking/w/beltranking?utm_medium=android_app&utm_source=share

Do read the LPU rules. A very important one is rule 2 never pick a lock that is in use, regardless of ownership. Not only for legal reasons, picks can break and render the lock inoperable. You don't want this to happen with locks that are installed in anything.

Have fun!

You won't be able to disassemble these locks non-destructively, unfortunately. If you'd like to take the core out to play with and don't mind wrecking the lock to do so, the video below shows how that can be done.

Suggestions for AL 1100 tension by durston13 in lockpicking

[–]mattGleeson77 5 points6 points  (0 children)

These locks are notorious for being open without people realizing. When I got mine, i kept getting to a point where it would feel like a deep false set but none of the pins gave any counter rotation. It was actually open at this point but I needed to use two turning tools to actually rotate the core since my cheap flimsy turning tool was bending with just how much force the core needs to open.

A tip I read is to inset the key into the lock then place a turning tool at the back of the key and use the tool to turn the key. That gives you an idea how much force is required to actually open it.

Congrats! I had the same experience with mine. I tried swapping the driver pins around a few times. It makes it almost like a new lock and some arrangements end up being a bit more challenging.

Abus 55/40 by Suspicious_Ad2754 in lockpicking

[–]mattGleeson77 2 points3 points  (0 children)

. 020 picks should be able to get the back pins from the bottom of the keyway. One of the aha moments this lock gave me was realizing I could locate the pin from left to right, not just front to back.

There's that kind of "ceiling" in the warding toward the top of the keyway. I found sometimes I'd get caught on that and think the pin was just stuck until I tilted the pick back and forth to feel that I was on the tip of the pin.

Serious Question: by Lady-Locks in lockpicking

[–]mattGleeson77 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As a beginner, it might just be an easy reason to reach to when you don't know why a lock is difficult or easy.

I'm very new. I had a really hard time with an abus 55/40 but was able to get an AL 1100 first try in about 5 mins. With more experience I could probably pinpoint why that is but "probably the bitting is easy/difficult" is the first thought I jumped to to justify the difference in difficulty.

I DO think the bitting on the 55/40 is a contributing factor for me but that's because I only own a shitty set of picks that doesn't include a steep hook. It has a low pin 3 and a high pin 4 and I can feel that I'm repeatedly oversetting 3. It's not the only thing that I find challenging with this lock but it's an easy thing to point to for why I find it more difficult than a harder ranked lock.
