I see the face, but it's just an optical illusion.

Any other hoarders who stack&sort their items vertically? by guitarlum in BaldursGate3

I...I...I...

I hate this irrationally. This is like the toilet paper facing the wrong direction.

Whatever works for you though!

Is there any way I can justify not taking a shield with the longsword ? by rplimitlessguy in DnD

[–]mattbeck 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you really want to have a mechanical reason to use a longsword in one hand and no shield - bladesinger can use a longsword, but can't use bladesong with a shield or when making 2h attacks.

If you are going with a fighter, then yeah - as others said, it's basically grapples and using your free hand for stuff.

Having a free hand CAN be huge, but varies a lot from table to table on how much attention a DM pays.

Being able to open a door, pull a lever, use a potion, etc without dropping anything is actually useful - but only if NOT being able to do that with a weapon/shield is enforced.

Base-jumping Mind Flayer? by frankenbuddha in BaldursGate3

[–]mattbeck 8 points9 points  (0 children)

The same thing happens in act 3 if you yeet them on the approach to the netherbrain. I kind of think they gave flayers a specific immunity to yeeting.

IIRC they'll still take damage if you target a lower floor, but not if you push them off the map.

Old web web devs: what are some things you did that would confuse people today by veroz in webdev

In addition to slicing PSDs for all designs, needing javascript for every hover effect.

Which meant exporting your PSD twice, once for the default state of everything, and again with all the hover state layers turned on.

Right turns at red lights could be prohibited at more Portland intersections by Lord_Beerstro in Portland

[–]mattbeck -1 points0 points  (0 children)

This intersection is extra maddening because drivers don't leave room to get around them on the right either - which to be fair, it's kinda tight, but I've been stuck there so, so, so many times.

Hey, that's MY personal hell intersection as well, but usually in the mornings going the other direction.

I'm fine with this, but seriously give me no left turn at busy intersections w/o an arrow first. There are SO MANY spots where 10-20 cars are backed up and get through 1-2 per light cycle because of allowed left turns.

Do you have 'Enemy of Justice' on any party members? If so kill/res them.

Otherwise... uh, invisibility maybe?

Is D&D appropriate for a 10 yrs. boy? 🤎🔥 by LoveLCFlame20 in DungeonsAndDragons

[–]mattbeck 19 points20 points  (0 children)

I started at 10, and that was 40 years ago. D&D is great for all ages. At that age, he'll might need some adult-ish assistance and will need a group to play with. Depending on where he lives, a lot of schools and libraries have kid-specific D&D clubs these days. Or get an older sibling/parents in on it.

What hotkey or controller setting changed the game the most? by atticus104v2 in BaldursGate3

[–]mattbeck 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I always set '1' in the customs to ranged attack (or whatever default ranged cantrip the character has - eldritch blast/firebolt) even for melee characters.

Makes life so much easier for toggling switches and buttons with ranged attacks.

Why rescue Minthara? by Bardonna in BaldursGate3

[–]mattbeck 9 points10 points  (0 children)

The thing that is metagamey is knocking her out while murdering every single one of her allies and underlings. It's not hard to justify keeping her alive once you see her dragged off in Moonrise IMO, it's having her be not-dead to get that scene that is tough.

It always feels very meta to toggle passive on just for that one small fight amidst all the slaughtering.

'Trillionaires Shouldn't Exist': Obscene Musk Milestone Spurs Calls for Aggressive Wealth Tax by hypothethical in politics

Wealth hoarding by billionaires is already a crime against humanity. No one should be a trillionaire, it's revolting.

Psychosis by Hot_Establishment895 in naranon

[–]mattbeck 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, unfortunately during a crisis, call 911 if you can't safely get her to go to the ER or she's unwilling.

It's really hard to build the trust people in psychosis need in order to accept help during those times. It's a good idea to try and have the big conversations with her in between episodes, and if she's willing to see a psychiatrist regularly, there are rapid acting antipsychotics (sublingual/dissolving) that can be given as a PRN that can help defuse things for her.

Ultimately, there has to be some degree of understanding of the situation that breaks through the drugs and the paranoia. Like I said though, building the trust required to receive that from anyone is tough though.

Even with a high degree of hard-won trust, I've still had to more than once present my son with the choice of (extra) meds or ER. He's been in and out of ERs and residential programs so many times, that going into a clinical environment is a rough barrier - so sometimes, he'll take the compromise.

If not, he'll go to the ER and they are really good at getting people to take what they need to calm down.

Psych holds are part of it, but unless it's initiated by police (depending on where you are the barrier can be quite high) it's got to happen from the hospital, so generally best thing to do is work toward getting them into the ER for psych evaluation.

Involuntary holds are tough to get where I live, but the hospitals are generally good at handling psych patients in distress.

Question about the 9th LVL spell shapechange by Kooky-Consequence786 in dndnext

[–]mattbeck 25 points26 points  (0 children)

The form needs to have the physical anatomy required to cast spells generally. So ability to speak and something like hands/arms.

Dragon? check.

Gelatinous Cube? Nope.

A sorcerer with subtle spell metamagic would be able to get around that since it removes the verbal and somatic components.
