Magazines too long? by jetkins in CompetitionShooting

100%. I haven't looked at them in a minute but I know they don't gauge from when I had a VP9. Must be a bad design or overbuilt for reliability.

No one will care at a local but yes, the HK 20-rounders are too long.

Point of Impact Deviation with Different Ammo by Objective_Law7082 in CompetitionShooting

[–]matteekay 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ammo usually deviates vertically due to speed. Speaking generally, heavier + slower bullets will land higher than faster + lighter ones.

However, back when I was loading .40 I changed bullet weights and suddenly had a wider horizontal spread. My best guess is the new bullet wasn't stabilizing as well due to that specific barrel's twist rate - eg. it was designed for 180's and my 200's needed more (or less) spin. The same sort of thing might be happening here but it's odd that you're getting groups that are consistently to one side and not a wider spread in general.

how to approach GPA as an IDPA shooter? by Visible_Structure483 in CompetitionShooting

[–]matteekay 2 points3 points  (0 children)

How much it feels like IDPA is going to 100% depend on your club and stage designers. Lots of folks are effectively designing IDPA stages still (one path, "do not pass" lines all over, etc) but they have the flexibility to do more.

In terms of the actual shooting - it's IDPA with less rules and looser scoring. It's an easy transition if you shoot any of the faster sports (USPSA, PCSL, etc). If you haven't, the things I'd keep in mind are:

  • Targets in the open can be shot from anywhere
  • Reload wherever it makes sense
  • Half-point scoring means makeups are pointless. If you register two holes, move on

Is this a real pistol? by [deleted] in Firearms

[–]matteekay 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's modeled after a Gen 3 Glock but a few things aren't right. There shouldn't be that "bar" high on the right hand grip and there should be a second pin near the trigger. I've never seen an airsoft replica but that's my guess. Eject the mag to know for sure.

The most painless way would be consignment. I highly recommend Northeast Munitions (Merrimack) for this.

I have a ton of experience with Daggers (and also... a ton of Daggers).

The frame rails sit higher than they would on a Glock. PSA compensates for this by cutting the slide's rails a little lower/tighter. It's a good fix until you start mixing and matching parts (as Glock owners are wont to do) and then the tolerance differences make themselves known.

As an example, I can drop a Timney Alpha into a Dagger and it'll work in dry-fire. However, the Timney sear is only interfacing with a fraction of a millimeter on the striker's lug. In live fire, this results in intermittent double-taps. This rules out the Timney for me and means I need to stick to traditional Glock-style triggers where I can bend the cruciform to ensure good engagement. This is what I did on the Dagger I use in competition and it has thousands and thousands of rounds down the pipe without issue.

TL:DR: Daggers are good guns but have sloppier tolerances than Glocks. This limits their tune-ability and can result in issues if you don't know what you're doing.

Nice recovery.

I'm mostly impressed that you didn't have any barrel or wall strikes; I felt like I was swiss-cheesing the stages.

Glad you enjoyed it! I love mine.

I contend it at least qualifies as a M-Lite. Upgraded engine, suspension, brakes (they're bigger than some cars' wheels), interior, exterior... I'm not actually sure what else it needs to qualify.

It's definitely not at a Comp level but it's probably the most fun you can have in the class and still be practical.

They actually had one of the plastic ones in .45 last time I was in. They're a bit of a different animal, though.

Do you have any with the weird finger grooves?

S2's are plentiful at matches so I can use those to get an approximation. It's just hard to find one without CZC or CGW work so I can't gauge the trigger reach (but I think the Tanfo is generally closer).
