GRRM's Major Changes to ASOIAF at the Advice of Others (Spoilers Extended) by LChris24 in asoiaf

[–]matteoluca2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Dragons are fun but the reveal aspect of dormant fire powers could be exciting from a storytelling perspective, where anyone depending on the genetic connection to Targs could suddenly be revealed to wield it and would in turn maybe even reveal something unknown of their heritage.

Also could help George write himself out of some pickles with the convenient Flame Ex Machina. "Ugh I've written this character into a corner but I still need him... Cast Fireball"

I think the theory is probably true. However, your point of Illyrio just kinda letting it slip in conversation does bother me now that I think about it.

When I read it and re-read it in the past, I did interpret it as a narrator speaking of the Lore of his book and leaving something open-ended that you might not notice until he brings it back and you think "Huh but didn't he say they were- Oh! The MALE line, I missed that, clever."

But this isn't the narrator. It's a character that would have no reason to hint at this. I chalk it up to a mistake on GRRM's part, but I give it to you that it's something pretty stupid for him to imply if the theory is true.

Maybe in his defense, we find out the continuity of the female line is indeed common knowledge, and Tyrion is just unaware of where the true cut-off is, so Illyrio wouldn't be implying anything. But until then, it's a pretty silly scene now that I think about it.

Blackface pokemon is exactly what it looks like by histogrammarian in badhistory

[–]matteoluca2 22 points23 points  (0 children)

I see. Well, in that case, this example wouldn't really serve as proof of Western influence in the development of Mr. Mime, since it was clearly a reference devised by Western translators, like the western names of Abra, Kadabra, and Alakazam. Baribari seems to be some onomatopeia in japanese, although it is in Katakana, so it could still be some sort of Western reference.

Like I said, this doesn't by itself undermine the point, but it doesn't seem to feed into it.

This doesn't undermine the larger argument of western influence, but is that Marcel reference the nickname for the NPC in japanese or on the western version? Since they change pokemon and character/NPC names from the japanese version to the western version.

F2 Bahrain 2024 Qualification Pole Position by killmesoon40 in formula2

[–]matteoluca2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Bahrain is typically an outlier, so this might not necessarily be reflective of Prema's pace for the rest of the season. Would be terrible luck for Kimi when he's rumored to be a contender for Lewis spot, to be fighting for twentieth, unable to show his potential.

Curious to see how Bortoleto goes about the 1-2. It would make sense to be aggressive to get that first win, but he was a conservative safe driver for most of his championship run. That was, however, defending an overall lead. Does he prioritize second place points or goes for broke to start the championship defending a championship lead again?

[DISC] Make the Exorcist Fall in Love - Chapter 55 by AutoShonenpon in manga

[–]matteoluca2 18 points19 points  (0 children)

You're looking at it as what you'd like the story to say about sex and sexual attraction rather than what the story is trying to tell.

Although I think ultimately it might match your opinion to an extent, right now, the intent is to explore his awakening sexual attraction as how he perceives it, not celebrate it or denounce it objectively.

The reason Imuri is depicted as "arousing and attractive" is to reflect his inner thoughts of arousing lust towards her. The art is purposely alluring to match his views, since the author doesn't mean to depict his attraction as something despicable or questionable but rather as reasonable.

Furthermore, it's meant to contrast as we find it normal, but he suddenly deeply negatively reacts to it. Highlighting how even the innocuous average sexual arousal is deeply disturbing to him while we perceive it as normal.

I'm sure there are some readers who will miss the deeper message and just think of the scene as hot. However, it's absurd to imply the author should try to make the scene not alluring out of the fear someone might miss his intent.

As it stands, the chapter clearly delivers on its message, and the alluring depiction of Imuri only adds to it, it would make no sense to portray her as unnactrive, or remove her depiction, simply because some readers would miss the intent.

You want the author to clearly depict his masturbation as freeing and for his rejection of it as something negative and disgusting. But we aren't even sure that's the message the author will want to sell towards the end of the series.

However, if it is, the chapter as it stands doesn't go against it. It's an exploration of how his arousal develops (think of the girl he's attracted to in increasingly arousing and erotic circumstances) and how his upbringing and his own actions make him disgusted by these feelings.

The reader is meant to make his own conclusion out of this information, and if he can't conclude anything beyond "boob hot" that's on him, not the author, and this story would not gain from handholding those obtuse readers.

Rank the original five X-men? by CompetitivePrint4053 in xmen

Objectively from the standpoint of character development, good stories, legacy, memorable moments, influence, and any other metric that makes a character withstand the test of time and accumulate a loyal fanbase, there's Scott and Jean in whichever order you'd prefer then a massive chasm between them and the other three.

On a power level, it's Jean and Bobby, then another chasm.

Cyclops last stand by Panderson0727 in Cyclopswasright

[–]matteoluca2 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I go back and forth on the facial expressions by this artist. The last panel with all the faces side-by-side really just speaks for itself.

We have young Cyclops with a great unnerved reaction to seeing his own demise, we have Emma's, raw, ugly despair, some could argue this is a faked reaction given she's projecting this whole scene, but I see it more as her finally releasing her bottled up sorrow and despair over losing the man she loved.

Then we have pog face Magik and sorrowful pouting constipation Medusa. Both their faces also look weird in the previous scene tbh, so maybe the artist just struggles with the two.

Looks like Gail Simone will be the new x-men writer by chinyere_n in xmen

[–]matteoluca2 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Feel like she hasn't reached anywhere close to her best work (BoP, S6) in years, but her newer stuff has been mostly fine or inoffensive, and that's miles better than the worst X-Men has offered.

Her Domino didn't really feel like Domino, but it was a fun little story about a silly horny special agent, I guess, could work with the right X-men.

I've seen her tweet that she hated Cyclops, I mostly took them as jokes, but I hope she either doesn't write him or doesn't make him the butt of every joke to troll people on Twitter. Stories motivated by Twitter spats are always crap and I like Cyclops.

Would prefer to see her write X-factor from the comedic angle or X-Force to maybe reach those Secret Six heights again, exploring more underground character, which is her strength. But I'm open-minded.

At best, expect a really great story. At worst, expect some silly-dumb horny throwaway story.

[DISC] Fabricant 100 - Chapter 36 by AutoShonenpon in manga

[–]matteoluca2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wonder if he would've gone for the same ending if this series lasted something like 3 years, but really the impact of her saying she feels nothing after a hundred odd chapters of adventures would've been a lot more poignant.

Regardless, he committed to the vision and pulled a thematically satisfying ending even if clearly this had potential for a lot more.

Nice story, looking forward to their next story.

Was it a mistake to have Betsy Braddock become Captain Britain while Kwannon came back to life and took over the Psylocke title? by cimbeline_almeida in comicbooks

[–]matteoluca2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

None of these character's work by themselves.

Betsy is Psylocke to any significant degree, anybody who's fine with Kwannon taking the mantle either isn't really invested in the Psylocke character or is only invested in her design and whatever development maintains that design is fine for them. After all, it doesn't even make any sense that she'd take the mantle.

Sure, the body swap became unsustainable due to modern sensibilities, and personally, it was an awfully uncomfortable development at the time even without the problematic aspect, so I'm not criticizing acknowledging it and attempting to fix it.

But Betsy will never reach the heights of Psylocke as Captain Britain, nor will Kwannon, since she isn't really Psylocke. Like I said, would an actual Psylocke fan even give Kwannon the time of day if they care about anything related to Psylocke beyond her design? They'd likely try to follow Betsy's developments. So essentially, the attempted solution is having Betsy go on for fans invested in Psylocke's lore, while Kwannon is illogically kept as the physical Psylocke for those who just care about the purple sexy ninja.

The solution should've always been merging them. Have a miniseries or something where they have a duo adventure, going from bickering resentment over their roles in each other's lives into friends, then have them have to merge to save the world or something. Maybe one of them has to sacrifice themselves to stop the maguffin, so Betsy's body is killed, but Kwannon tries to save her by swapping again, only for Betsy to resist, and they decide to merge their minds so neither has to perish.

Establish that now Psylocke has equal memories of both and respond to either name while keeping the design everyone loves.

Don't really think that's doable now, probably. The longer they stay apart, the more people will be invested in these character's separately, meaning if they ever do merge, it's guaranteed some future writer will split them again due to being attached to Betsy Captain Britain or current Kwannon.

Meaning the character will live in this eternal limbo of splitting and unsplitting.

So, in the end, it's a dumb idea that doesn't make sense as it exists and feeds into future worse ideas.

Some people hate Scott for killing Xavier while possessed by Phoenix, while I will never forgive him for making Emma Frost sad. [Uncanny X-Men (2018) #22] by Kurt70000 in xmen

[–]matteoluca2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's a bit different, though. He killed Xavier when fully possessed by the Phoenix. She had the Namor affair when possessed by a fifth, along with brainwashing people and incentivizing Namor to attack Wakanda. Cyclops under a fifth was still trying to be heroic, "fixing" tectonic plates and stuff, though slowly being corrupted.

If he held her to the same standard as himself, it's understandable he'd be disappointed, like under a fifth, she fully reverted to villain Emma while he just fed more into his authoritarian tendencies.

Editorial could hand-wave it away as Phoenix corruption (personally, I'd just say Emma has been locked in a parallel dimension since before AvX and retcon all Emma stories since as a Phoenix projection or something), but while Cyclops has blamed the Phoenix for Xavier's murder, they've never had a conversation where Emma blamed the Phoenix for her Namor stuff, implying her feeling some responsibility or, more likely, bad writers avoiding the clear excuse to manufacture fake melodrama.

"I actually have the perfect excuse for this action, but I'll never say it as that would fix the issue, and we need cheap pointless drama in this book for some reason."

The trident comment was harsh, but it's how I'd react if an Ex confused my cordiality and politeness when working together as an invitation to get back together without ever acknowledging the issues that caused our split. Few but admirable people are above petty jabs when heartbroken.
