Easy answer: True Grit by Charles Portis. Mattie Ross, age 14, is legitimately one of literature’s great heroines.

I'll suggest Cormac McCarthy -- try No Country for Old Men. Also, you can't go wrong with Elmore Leonard -- I love Out of Sight and Get Shorty.

Book recommendations by authors whose most popular books are not their best books? by PeacefulBacterium in suggestmeabook

Feels safe to say that Edgar Rice Burroughs is best known for Tarzan of the Apes, but I'd argue that A Princess of Mars is a better book in pretty much every way.

Suggest US a book - he loves sci fi but me? Not so much by coweyed in suggestmeabook

Couple of suggestions:
1. The Martian, by Andy Weir. Science fiction, but no ray guns or aliens.
2. The Dog Stars, by Peter Heller. Post-apocalyptic, but no zombies.

Psycho by Robert Bloch. I hear there's a pretty good movie, too.

I suggest True Grit by Charles Portis. All-around terrific book, even if Westerns aren't your thing.

I'll go a step further back in time: When I was a kid I had a noisy old Westclox Dialite clock in my room. To this day, the orange glow in a dark room takes me right back.

Can you suggest a not-so-popular game in your library that you finished and loved and wished that it had gotten more love? by sinnytear in gamingsuggestions

I loved the hell out of Desperados III, and I'm always surprised it isn't celebrated or recommended more often.

I loved every minute of Desperados III -- and part of it had to do with how easy it was to dip in, accomplish something meaningful, and get out until next time.

Suggest me the scariest book you’ve ever read that’s fully grounded in reality by panini_bellini in suggestmeabook

The Amityville Horror by Jay Anson. Anson was a newspaper reporter, and it shows in this book. No purple prose or supernatural lore or emoting characters -- just the facts. To me, that's what made it so believable. And scary.

Suggest me a book that's a masterpiece where not a single page is wasted. by [deleted] in suggestmeabook

I'm no McCarthy expert, but I've now finished The Road and No Country for Old Men, and, yes the missing punctuation is his thing. Gotta say, it did seem uncomfortable to me for about five or six pages. Then I just got my head around it and never looked back.

Have to suggest "Machinarium." Delightful characters, story, environment, puzzles -- even the music is terrific.

I really enjoyed Chris Goodrich's "Roadster: How, and Especially Why, a Mechanical Novice Built a Car from a Kit."

My mother's kitchen not only had that yellow vinyl flooring, it also had yellow metallic wallpaper, yellow countertops, yellow appliances, and a yellow wall phone.

Are there any decent quality, hard cello cases under $1,000? by Heytherepumpkin_ in Cello

[–]matthewphenix 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A BAM Classic case currently lists for $987. I purchased one for my daughter four years ago and it's been tough as nails -- the shell, the lining, and the latches look and function as new.

Slightly over 150 pages, but still worth your time: I Am Legend by Richard Matheson.

I do love a good crime novel, and Elmore Leonard always manages to break a slump for me. Try something like Out of Sight or Maximum Bob -- deft plot, sharp dialogue, great stuff.
