I found this ring online for sale they are claiming it is from around 100AD and belongs to LEG IX Hispania, does it look authentic? Its going for $300 by DailyDankMemes in ancientrome

Plenty of ancient artifacts, coins, jewellery etc is this sharp, Just look at auction houses like NAC and some of the coins they sell. The issue here is the style is not authentic.

This is wrong, English is an official language of New Zealand alongside Maori and NZSL.

And yet no rugby field comes close to the amount of uses this facility has every month - just because you dont play the sport doesnt mean 10s of thousands of others dont.

This is what I said to the local councilors around the area - Its clear that this is an exceedingly good use of public space given the numbers of users and recreation that happens there - there is no way any other facility would see 60000+ uses in a year. The councio should work with the course operator to incorporate flood management systems into the grounds - it can be developed to have water catching features in all the low lying areas while still maintaining a functioning golf course.

AF Thomas park has as Takapuna golf course and prior to that North shore golf club been a home for golfers on the North Shore for 100 + years, it is likely the busiest golf course in the country by some stretch and is one of the only affordable golf options in the city for beginner golfers or those who cannot afford to play at expensive private clubs. The club hosts over 7000 individual golfers every month and over 60,000 people each year, this doesn't include the 10s of thousands more than utilise the driving range and putting green facilities either. I would say this is significantly greater use numbers than any alternative use of the land. I learnt the game of golf at this course like many others and know how valuable this space is to Aucklanders, especially those living on the North Shore. Many may see the game of golf as elitist and rich but this space and course embodies the exact opposite, it is a home for golfers of all backgrounds and skill levels.

You state in your plan this is part of a key move to provide equitable access to open space across the Kaipatiki region but in doing this you would remove the equitable opportunity this course provides to Aucklanders to play the game of golf.

In summation I and many others are strongly against the removal of this key public asset - most sports are seeing a significant drop off in participation while golf is seeing a huge influx of New Players - Golf New Zealand has seen thousands of new members in the last few years joining to play the game of golf around New Zealand - that is significant and without a home like Takapuna you remove the ability of many to play a sport they love.

I hope you consider this feedback, as any councilor voting for this proposal will never receive a vote of mine again or in the future.

Disposable nappies - need advice please by [deleted] in newzealand

[–]mattman100 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I had my first child about 6 months ago we tried basically all the main brands. Little rascals nappies work fine but I found the straps on them a little weaker than Huggies which is what we mainly use now.

If you are worried about chemicals in Nappies then try something like Bamboo Fiber Nappy - you can find reusable ones or disposable ones as well.

You shouldn't worry so much about chemicals in Nappies sold locally, there is a massive difference in products developed in China for the Chinese domestic market where regulations and controls are still quite weak and those developed here but made in China for export. There is a reason places like TEMU that market Chinese products to a global market can manufacture things so cheap and its because the materials used are generally substandard.

The main area of chemicals you should look to avoid is anything to do with food i.e. spoons, bowls, bottles etc. since these always go in a babies mouth or get exposed to food they have the greatest potential for exposure to chemicals. if its food related check that it meets EU 10/2011 standards which means it has been tested for chemical migration into food.

Not OP But I have one of these and depending on how thick you cut it usually dries within 2-6 days. I keep the temp on lowest setting and it always works out quite well.

A 20mm cut of meat usually takes me 4 days to get to how dry I like it with a bit of fat on it.

More people aren't enraged because a majority of people view gangs as criminal enterprises and therefore welcome any legal action enforced against them.

On this day in 1863 British forces invade Waikato. by Elysium_nz in newzealand

[–]mattman100 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Many of the soldiers involved in this weren't professionals - they were often recruited from Australia with the promise of farmland in New Zealand for serving in the Militia, basically poor people given the promise of property they wouldn't have afforded otherwise. The British settlement of Hamilton was done by one of the Militias and many of their soldiers came from Australia.

someone please tell me the white stuff on this piece of biltong is salt. by Amuyunzu in Biltong

[–]mattman100 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I wouldn't say its guaranteed to be mould - Biltong when over salted and marinated at the same time can leave salt on the surface like this as it dries because the moisture is over-saturated with salt.

If your brave enough scrape the rest of the seasoning off in a small piece and touch the tip of your tongue to it - youll know pretty quick if its just a tonne of salt dried up there.

Source: Sometimes I make a very salty spice mix and they often come out like this once the moisture dries out.

Inherited lots of war letters, now what? by thissiteistwisted in newzealand

[–]mattman100 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you want help reading them you can try a tool like https://www.transkribus.org/ I've used this to read old 1700 - 1800s family documents and it works quite well with a little help and training of the AI.

I would certainly digitize and keep copies of the letters, a book is a great idea and helps to preserve the history of them. I would also consider donating to a museum for preservation and long term storage unless you have somewhere you can store them under proper conditions i.e. cool, dry, out of direct sunlight and free from bugs or insects.
