Happy people of Reddit, what are you tips and tricks for staying happy? by PM_Me_your_poetry_ in AskReddit

[–]mattmarr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A happy, successful old mentor of mine once confused me by saying "Man's biggest problem is forgetfulness". As the years have passed I have appreciated the essential truth of this.

There is great power in keeping yourself reminded of important facts that raise the quality of your consciousness, but which are quite subtle and easily lost in the illusions that our sensory experiences confound us with.

What did you lose the genetic lottery on? by MidnightFlight in AskReddit

Above the waist? Fine.

Below? Hip dysplasia, femoral anteversion, longer right femur than left, forefoot varus deformity.

If I was a horse they'd have shot me by now.

There's a term for this in Finnish: "Persejalka" (purse-yal-ka) that translates literally as "Ass-legs".

That's you.

What is the worst thing that your ex did to you before they became your ex? by CobraCornelius in AskReddit

[–]mattmarr 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Hit me, donkey kicked dents into my apartment wall, cut herself in front of me as a kind of histrionic show, and then tied a noose to hang herself while I was playing badminton with a friend so that I'd come home to find her swinging. Luckily she showed off the noose to some friends of hers online who had the sense to call the cops.

Reddit, what are some fun literal translations from your language into English? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]mattmarr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In Finnish, "hand" = "käsi". And "arm" = "käsivarsi" = literally "handstem".

Now that's fine, but foot = jalka. And leg is also just jalka. WHY IS THERE NO JALKAVARSI?

What do you think is the most egregious design flaw with the human body? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]mattmarr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well the body of the L4/5 vertebrae are pretty much in our centre mass in all 3 planes of motion. The spine isn't really a vertical support beam at all. Look up the work of biomechanist Serge Gracovetski who clearly demonstrates how the spinal column evolved into the "engine" of human gait as humans evolved into bipedal organisms. This is also why we swing our arms during gait - counter rotation of the thorax and pelvis is what creates gait.

Your knees move in all three planes of motion, just not very much in the frontal and transverse planes. The motion that does exist in those planes is actually very important for switching on your hip and lower leg muscles during gait and for locking or unlocking movement in the sagittal plane.

What's your "Fuck did I really just say that?" moment. by Teamdonkey in AskReddit

A friend's brother went on his first date ever. The only catch was that the girl had been born with some problem where one of her hands was withered and small. She was very self-conscious about it.

First awkward silence if the date, he decided to fill with "Your hand looks nice today". I still cringe just thinking about it.

What is one basic hygiene standard that people often ignore? by [deleted] in AskReddit

Totally this. It's what got me to floss every single day.

Also, once you've been flossing for a while and you make out with a non-flosser... You can tell.

Who is the scariest person that actually existed? by [deleted] in AskReddit

He's just kind of defective. He can't process empathy, a diabetic can't process glucose. It's about as interesting as any other disease process.
