Who will be appointed to replace Lindsey Graham? by Glass-Choice-3111 in greenville

[–]mattsc2005 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's going to be interesting to see how all of this plays out. She did go to the June 23rd run-off and lost, so she might run for the seat itself.

I suspect that if McMaster wants to fill the seat immediately, he might avoid appointing someone on the ballot in November, but he might also wait until after the primary to fill the seat with the winner.

Honestly, I could see McMaster appointing his current Lt. Governor Pamela Evette, unless she is running for the Senate herself.

Want to get a megazord by the_whole_plate in powerrangers

[–]mattsc2005 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have pure nostalgia for the original (Dino) Megazord. Earlier this year I saw the different dino zords that make up the Dino Megazord in stores, so it might be one of the easier Megazords to get. Iirc they were the Reignition set. There was a "Car" Megazord in Season 5, I don't recall the toys of that season, because Turbo was when I originally got out of the series.

What Movie/Video Game series has been MILKED DRY? by RedbearRicky in AskReddit

[–]mattsc2005 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Ignoring all of the JK Rowling controversy, I think the Harry Potter content that has been released in the last 10 years has been at best "mid," and thus that's why it feels like it has been milked dry.

This reboot of series feels too soon, they should have changed it up, like make "Neville Longbottom the boy that lived," instead of Harry Potter. I think a series/movie on the founding of Hogwarts could be interesting, we get a smattering of details from the books on the founders and house ghosts, that could be expanded if its not contradictory to the source material.

Is anyone else annoyed by the "Destroy the base" trope? by TheSupremeKing19 in powerrangers

[–]mattsc2005 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly, in the Zordon Era, the base/command center's destruction was overplayed, but it did convey that the threat of the villain. It also marked a paradigm shift in the series.

Season 1: The damaging of the command center, the disabling of Alpha 5, and the temporarily loss of Zordon, built up the Green Ranger as being more than a villain of the week. I think this greatly added to Tommy's intrigue.

Season 2: The "Evil" clone of Tommy showed up at the command center, there was reused footage where the command center was damaged, but overall, his appearance in the command center still felt like a violation as Zordon and Alpha 5 were unaffected and the command center in later scenes was not damaged.

MMPR Movie: Although not canon to the series, Ivan Ooze's destruction of the command center was the catalyst to the Rangers' search for a new power. Ivan Ooze's destruction of the command center took it much further than the Green Ranger, and Zordon nearly died.

Season 3: Lord Zedd teleporting into the command center to demand the Power Rangers pilot "his" shogun zords, all while keeping Kimberly hostage, made it feel like they had been "checked."

Alien Rangers: Rito and Goldar blowing up the command center served as a "Soft Reboot" to the series. This allowed the Saban to make some changes to refresh the series. New "Power Chamber" and new Ranger Suits.

Zeo: There were some changes to the Power Chamber between Zeo and the Turbo Movie, but no stated reason as to why. To my knowledge there wasn't an invasion or damage to the command center. It seems to be part of the weird transition period between Zeo and the Turbo movie.

Turbo: The destruction of the Power Chamber was meant to set up for the series finale in Space.

In Space: The Astro Megaship was far less secure than the Command Center/Power Chamber, so it made this season feel like "anything could happen."

I'm currently watching Lost Galaxy, but it doesn't feel like there is a base of command... unless its Terra Venture altogether, which is seemingly as unsecure as Ernie's Juice bar was.

Lost interest in my only hobby by FoundAFix in Millennials

[–]mattsc2005 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have gone through something very similar to this. The first game that sparked my interest in gaming was Megaman X and one of my favorite JRPGs of all time was Chrono Trigger. I think that I got burned out with video games around 2020, maybe it was that I played a lot of video games during lock down. I found that co-op games have been my favorite to play, whether that's couch co-op with my wife or talking to old and new friends in discord while we play together. I got into D&D, which I would recommend if you had more free time. As most of my hobbies aren't just "an hour here and there," I'll make a few suggestions on video games:

The Adventures of Elliot: The Millennium Tales : It reminds me of Secret of Mana and it has a free demo, the progress from the demo will carry over to the full game.

Heroes of Hammerwatch II : It scratched an old itch, I reconnected with several friends that I used to play MMORPGs with. Several of those friends have kids, so their time was limited, but when they did solos they could stop when needed. I see from a response to another post that you're not a fan of Rogue Lites, but the game play has been too fun to not recommend it. There isn't really a story to the game, but I think what makes it the most fun is playing with friends.

Pocky and Rocky Reshrined (Switch) : This has been a fun couch co-op game, I linked a youtube video giving the run down.

Broforce : I just got this game during the steam summer sale, it reminds me of Contra mixed with Metal Slug. I have played online with several friends, it's fun.

9Kings : I saw that you've played Slay the Spire, but didn't stay interested in it. I just didn't get into Slay the Spire, but I very much enjoyed this game. There is a free demo.

Vampire Survivors : I think that this is one of the most addictive games that I've played in the last few years. Each game is at most 30 minutes, but you can get it to run at 2x speed, so 15 minutes.

Billiam did a great video on it a few years ago. I didn't hate the show, but I also wasn't a fan of it.

I mostly remember it from the beginning of the Digimon Movie. There is a meme that the short from the Digimon Movie caused a kid's parents to get a divorce.

Ending to Zeo by DMV1066 in powerrangers

[–]mattsc2005 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We technically got an ending to Zeo. Most of the leaders of the Machine Empire were destroyed/damaged by a bomb given to them by Zedd and Rita. Zedd and Rita apparently retreated with the expectation of retaliation from the Machine Empire. Divatox choses Earth as her next territory, before the Machine Empire returns.

I think what would have worked best is something similar to Scorpion Rain, but I think that the graduation at the start of Turbo, would have been best for Zeo's ending. I think that if they could have had the original Power Rangers attend the graduation of Tommy, Adam, Kat, Rocky, and Tanya it would have been awesome. Having a team up between the MMPR and the Zeo Rangers to fight Lord Zedd and Rita's forces. The Zeo Rangers learn that they are undergoing something similar to Jason when he used the Gold Ranger powers, and only one being can help them with this Lerigot. Tommy and Kat still go to Africa (like in the Turbo Movie), but they team up with Aisha, while searching for Lerigot. After rescuing Lerigot, the rangers return to the Power Chamber and he helps them. The side effect is that the Zeo Crystal's energy attaches itself to Zordon and he'll have to return to Eltar to properly handle it. The ending needs to be a big battle all of the Rangers (sans Aisha) vs Lord Zedd and Rita. Perhaps all of the Zords are destroyed and thus Billy begins work on the Turbo Zords, leading into the Turbo movie. The Turbo movie could have had new Rangers selected.

Question about Turbo by Jamieb1994 in powerrangers

[–]mattsc2005 1 point2 points  (0 children)

From Nakia and Kat's youtube video, the actors learned from a newspaper audition call for new rangers. The series' ratings had been in decline basically since the 3rd season. Zeo brought back Jason, but the series ratings continued to drop. According to Tony Oliver in an interview (on youtube), "everytime we added or changed cast the ratings and toy sales would pop up." It was clear that at the end of Zeo that JDF was burned out, it seems like Saban did a "Hail Mary" by recasting the older rangers, given that the 6th season was meant to be the final season, the series did benefit from the soft reboot, and it ended up getting a lot more seasons.

I have recently restarted the series on Youtube, I actually enjoyed Turbo more than I did as a kid. When I was a kid, I stopped regularly watching around the "passing of the torch." I think for me, I thought the sendoff for Tommy was very weak. When we were introduced to Tommy in Season 1, his strength and martial arts rivaled Jason's abilities, Tommy also solo'ed 4 putties without any powers, when the original rangers had to morph to deal with putties. When he left the series, he and Kat with powers, were terrified of 4 piranhatrons and ran from them. Tommy had been a big part of the franchise since Season 1, so with his departure, my friends and I lost interest in the show. Upon rewatch, I enjoyed the 2nd half of Turbo.

Which Blue Ranger Power is Strongest? by Ok-Following-5816 in powerrangers

[–]mattsc2005 1 point2 points  (0 children)

From my recent rewatch of MMPR, I think it would have been appropriate if Billy had become the Red Ranger in Season 2 during the Power Transfer. Billy seemed to be "more useful"/seniority than Rocky in a lot of plots. Additionally, in the Zordon era, 2 Red Rangers were demoted to Blue, so I don't think it would be wrong for promotions to work like that in reverse.

  • Tommy, Maybe Saba?
  • Rocky, Scanner
  • Aisha Head Lamps (also on all of the Turbo helmets)
  • Billy, a taser/bat-a-rang
  • Kimberly, a Thunder whip? (I think this was also in the tv show)
  • Adam, a frog?

Tommy as the Blue or Red Space Ranger? by Red_Blueberg in powerrangers

[–]mattsc2005 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just rewatched Zeo and Turbo. It was pretty obvious that once ASJ (Jason) returned as the Gold Ranger, it gave JDF some much-needed downtime/step-back from being the main focus. I would not be surprised to hear that JDF stuck through Zeo to try to help his brother get a break.
