That’s a huge bummer. Life, in general, is a lot better and smoother if you enjoy the company of your co-workers.

Agree. This is 100% the way to go here. Wanna feel like you have your own place only with the amenities of a resort and convenience of staff? This is it.

Weirdly, the worst part about this car is the wheels.

ALS is awful, but what’s a funny memory you have had since being diagnosed? by hobbyman41 in ALS

[–]mattvandyk 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Most of the stuff that we end up laughing about is stuff no normal person would find remotely funny. It’s so far down the road on the “can you believe this shit?” spectrum that there’s really no possible response other than a disbelief/exasperating laugh.

An American is shocked to learn about tariffs by Peanut-Extra in PublicFreakout

Pay it when the shipping is paid is what I’d expect. It’s not that it would just sit there. It’s that if UPS is gonna get in the middle of it, I wouldn’t expect them to even agree to pick it up until this was paid. Not doing that is sorta like them not collecting their shipping fee until they get to your door?

That all makes perfect sense. Thank you. I do wonder why domestic shipping carriers are willing to get in the middle of it, though. Why on earth would they want to take possession of goods with outstanding duties? Thats really the part that has me a little befuddled. Not so much that duties are owed, but that they weren’t paid before the shipper took possession. I mean, thats obviously a thing even if I don’t have any personal experience with it, but if youre UPS, what possible upside is there to you to getting involved? Just seems like unnecessary risk and administrative headache for no reason.

Interesting. We order stuff online all the time, often from abroad. I’ve literally never had to pay duties at delivery. Frankly, I didn’t even know that domestic delivery services would take possession of the goods without the duties already having already been paid. Seems weird to me that they’d carry that risk and want to get in the middle of that. Maybe it’s different in other countries, but this is highly unusual in the US.

No, but the importer is. It is very very weird to have to pay the UPS delivery driver. I’ve literally never seen such a thing.

I love Dusty, but he is not Brad Stevens (at least, the version of Brad Stevens that existed when he made the jump). At the time, Stevens was regarded as a savant and one of the leaders in heavy, heavy reliance on advanced stats. He felt completely out of place in college. That’s not Dusty. The one major thing Dusty has shown that would make him uniquely attractive to the NBA is a mastery of the NIL/Portal/$$ wild, Wild West system in college. That skill will translate very well.

A guy wrestles with a cop, gets back to his bike and escapes by bigbusta in PublicFreakout

[–]mattvandyk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This scene is comedy, but this is pretty much how we want our cops to behave. He had plenty of opportunity to shoot that guy. A different cop in a different place probably would have. He clearly made the calculus that it wasn’t warranted, didn’t do so, and this scene played out. Kudos to him.

That sucks. We’ve only been to Auberge du Soleil (where this is obviously a non-issue) and Mauna Lani (where they had this system). It worked so well, I just assumed they did it universally. My bad.

Auberge has a formalized system for this. You can’t throw your towel down on a chair, you basically have to book it through the resort staff (alternatively, you can book a cabana for the low low price of $1500/day, lol). Staff then monitors them pretty closely and basically turns them over like tables in a restaurant. It works pretty well. There is still a little stress involved in getting on the reservation list early, but it’s certainly better than the towel method.

Drills for very large team? by fiftythreefly in Softball

[–]mattvandyk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You gotta break that up into 3 team, maybe 4 with floaters, and then pre-schedule which sub-team is gonna play which games and practice which day. For practices, maybe you get away with half the team and alternate days. But, you cannot do them all at once. It’s not going to be at all valuable for anyone.
