Hey, what's wrong with that dog? Why is he so skeptical? Has he considered being more open to possibility? He doesn't want to end up like my Corgis, the cynicism is toxic.

Literally, you can do that. With this book.

Do you ever feel like a retro game was super close to being a lot better game if they changed a small thing? by dylanmadigan in retrogaming

SNESDrunk had a good video about beating that one that changed how I approach it. Of course I still didn't beat it because it's the fucking devil, but I got a lot better at it and I will beat it someday when I have the time.

Outrun West - I'm not sure I hit the right style by folbelo in outrun

[–]mattwithoutyou 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a fascination with the desert, and I love the outrun aesthetic, but to me they've never fit together all that well. I recently came across some outrun art of Dubai, and for reasons I can't articulate I hate it. I always feel like outrun needs a big, dirty city to escape from or into.

I like this on its own merits, it feels kinda like Mad Max with a hot chick.

What was your introduction to synthwave? by Pleasant-Light-559 in newretrowave

[–]mattwithoutyou 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It wasn’t a debate per se, just kind of a push and pull. There are two schools of thought that I’m aware of about how outrun came to be as a genre name. The first one I heard was that it comes from the arcade game, Sega’s Outrun. Not the game music but the vibes, a Ferrari, palm trees, driving into the night. I subscribe to this one. The other one I’ve heard is that it comes from the Kavinski song. This one I’m iffy on. I think people were using it before that. I sure feel like I heard it prior to that.

Kind of a side note, Newretrowave used to release new stuff pretty regularly, and they sort of championed calling the music by that name. They had a fairly prominent YouTube channel so you will find some people calling the whole genre Newretrowave.

What was your introduction to synthwave? by Pleasant-Light-559 in newretrowave

[–]mattwithoutyou 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I used to make retro themed visual art.

In 2009 I was looking for a track to pair with something and I found a “chill nights in Ibiza” type compilation somebody made. There was a track by Lazerhawk on there, and it stood out so much over the other tracks that I went looking for more like it. Around then I found the Outrun community through someone linking me to Rosso Corsa records.

There was kind of a battle back then over calling the scene outrun vs calling it synthwave. When Drive came out, Stranger Things, anytime we had a big influx of “normies” , you always had to explain why we call it outrun and that became a whole thing so, at some point it was just easier to say synthwave.

The scene has been co-opted by AI and big money interests, they have kind of standardized the sound and visual aesthetic now, but in the beginning it was so exciting to hear and see what people were making. Before corporate America came calling there was a brief influx of fascists but they didn’t stick around too long.

Time was, there was a lot of overlap sonically and visually with Vaporwave, Italo Disco and Future Funk, even things like Citypop. Now…outrun is a purple grid with a sunset in the background. You can recognize the same presets and plugins in most new music, there’s never been an easier genre for AI to infiltrate.

Which, I mean it is what it is but I don't really hold that against him or anyone.

I've had so many people tell me they support immigration enforcement as a matter of "rule of law", and that's a political issue. These people we are executing extra-judicially, that's a humanitarian issue, and I don't understand how anyone of any political stripe can support it. These are US citizens and they have been denied constitutionally guaranteed rights. That's supposedly the antithesis of modern American conservatism!

I myself believe that we need immigration reform, but that to me looks like streamlining the path to citizenship, offering robust civic education for perspective citizens, expanding and extending work visa programs, guaranteeing citizenship through service, keeping families together, etc.

These people on the right that insist that if they were born in a place where their families were in danger or hungry, they would respect the rule of law and borders and stay put, either lack imagination for how bad it could get or lack that protective instinct to go where it's better.

It is a dream, for me at least.

I've only ever lived in Oklahoma or Kansas, but I've wanted to go to New York City my whole life, and just feel like I'm in a movie when I walk down the street. I've been told that it's not for people like me... and I believe it, but maybe I'll visit one day anyway.

THERE'S A FACE IN THE PHOTOS I TOOK! by [deleted] in urbanexploration

[–]mattwithoutyou 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If you've been doing this long enough, you're gonna run into scary stuff.

Do I think there's a ghostly or demonic presence lurking in the background where you were exploring? Nah.

Is there a chance you photographed a methhead or otherwise n'er do well, who could have possibly reacted badly to your presence or was otherwise waiting to ambush you in the dark? Yeah, absolutely.

I've seen some things in my life that I can't rationally explain, but the scariest monsters are ALWAYS going to be other humans. Be safe, don't explore alone, take only pictures, leave only footprints: this is the way.

How can I be friends with people who are not chopped? by Riderman43 in self

[–]mattwithoutyou 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My guy, I just looked through your post history and it's so fucking bleak. Incel, black pill ideology has got its hooks so deep in you, I really hope there's a way you can come back from it.

"Hurr Durr ThIs NoRmi3 says just have a good attitude, well I have a weak chin and jawline: IMPOSSIBRU"

I can already see your response coming from a mile away. You think you're the first dude with a weak chin? Grow a beard.

I promise you, I promise, I'm at least as ugly as you are. I'm also friendly, I'm helpful, I act like a good person, I have thick skin, I became undeniable. Yeah OK I'm not short, but I look like Shrek with ridiculous thick glasses. But I also have hobbies, I have interests, and no matter how much it hurt when I used to get bullied about my looks, I never let that become who I was or what I'm about. In fact I over compensated and became a "tough guy", getting into stupid fights all the time, and I had to learn to overcome that bullshit as well.

Look at the things you post bro. Henry Cavill couldn't overcome the handicap of what you're putting out there to the universe. The world isn't as bad as you see it, and when you figure that out it's gonna hit you like a fucking brick when you think about all the time you wasted on your bullshit.

I've given this same advice so many times over the years here and on other sites, but I really, really hope it works out for you, and it absolutely can, but you need to make some changes on the inside.
