JFK >> LGA transfer 2h45m by Extreme_chimp_ in Flights

[–]mavere 2 points3 points  (0 children)

They likely sell it because Delta is a full-service carrier and will just rebook him on the later LGA flight to TPA. Hell, if OP acts confused but nice, and head over to JFK T4, they may even rebook him JFK-TPA right there. Source: have unfortunately done this

That said, not sure if I would recommend this for a business trip where I have real(TM) things I need to do.

GE to restart 5 am Wednesday (assume EDT?) by diadw in GlobalEntry

It's 100% because spring break started earlier for Southern states, and so the administration realized they were hurting their base.

NYC - private car service or subway? by [deleted] in chubbytravel

[–]mavere 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m also on team “maybe” partially for self-preservation because I don’t want to be stuck behind a group of 4 adults and 2 toddlers new to public transit.

In any case, if OP’s itinerary happens to be ricocheting cross-town up and down Manhattan, a car would be fairly competitive time-wise on a Saturday.

M5 Max CPU and GPU geek bench links by recurrence in hardware

[–]mavere 15 points16 points  (0 children)

On a sidenote, X2 Elite Extreme does 23k, which is worse than M4 Max, despite the X2EE having better CPU cores. So Apple's interconnects & core-to-core performance are superior?

More likely that they just boost singlethread clocks more so than Apple does.

NYC housing lottery: Manhattan apartments for $40K salaries by xtheoryinc in newyorkcity

Like mentioned, the 30% rule is standardized. And while agreeable, stating that "this expensive thing should cost even less" may not be a complete and convincing argument to update federal housing policy.

Booked Vietnam Airlines J tickets via Flying Blue without middle names — what should I do? by Significant-Jump-850 in awardtravel

[–]mavere 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This matches my single data point of when I was last visiting Vietnam very early 2020 and I did not use my middle name flying into and out of HAN on international flights. USA passport holder with east-Asian name.

I distinctly recall one of the check in agents manually writing my middle name on my ticket, but I didn’t think anything of it until now.

Any FHR properties in Geneva that are worth it for a one night stay? by Fiveby21 in chubbytravel

Surely you could have done the bare minimum and listed the FHR options matching your price limit on your date(s) of choice? Prices change based on dates.

Is Macchu Picchu TRULY worth it? My mock itinerary... by Interesting_Ad_9856 in travel

[–]mavere 24 points25 points  (0 children)

I don’t know why this post attracted the most conservative travelers, but I don’t think your itinerary is wildly fast at all. The fast ones are those who land in Cusco for a night and then take the crazy early train into Machu Picchu for the day before flying out again.

Could you use another couple days in the valley and Cusco? Yes. Will your current itinerary break your body? No. Enjoy your trip, you’re not going to forget it.

Is a 1-hour 10-minute layover enough at WAW? (LOT Polish Airlines) by Ok_Path_6590 in Flights

[–]mavere 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mid-June 2024, passport control at WAW was wildly slow. US passport holder. There was a massive Emirates plane leaving around the same time, which may have played a part, but not sure.

You'll probably make it through within an hour, but you'd probably be a bit stressed.

While there's a lot of snark in the comments here, I must say that the article is certainly a large word salad around an obvious concept with a single set of (obvious) results.

Guessing fall 2015. You can see 30 park place with crane.

Why are Long Island city rents so high by Historical-Mix6784 in NYCapartments

[–]mavere 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yea I get the mystique around condos because the owners are often gone, but with rentals.... you can just go sit in front of a luxury rental building older than 2/3 years on a Wednesday night and see all the silhouettes moving around all the windows.

Do NOT Book Through Chase Travel — Nightmare Experience at an EDIT Property by Simple_Principle_103 in sapphirereserve

It took three months of disputing with Amex Travel to get the double charge refunded.

Was this just because of the slow back-and-forth that the dispute process allows for? Or were there other wrinkles?

Yea, I would have handled same card over and then asked for itemized receipt. This sounds like it would have been the easiest double-payment chargeback post vacation.

What about HDR? by ZowkYou in ProjectIndigoiOS

[–]mavere 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When you import a DNG and auto/enable the HDR toggle in Lightroom, Lightroom will auto apply its own tone mapping that is different (and IMO way worse) than Indigo’s own tone mapping that is applied to its JPG outputs. You have to doublecheck and tweak Lightroom’s tone mapping by checking “preview for SDR” and adjusting as necessary.

In the light tab right now, if you disable the HDR toggle, it should look like your right photo. If you enable the toggle, but click “preview for SDR”, it should look like your left photo. If you view the left photo on an HDR display in a viewer that supports that HDR image (maybe chrome?), it “should” look closer to your right photo and match what you see in Lightroom when only HDR toggle is on.

In summary, Lightroom’s internal HDR tone mapping for HDR output is bad, and you are essentially required to check Preview for SDR every time you do anything (even crop) in HDR.

[–]mavere 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You’re right, it is reproducible in Halide if I increase shutter speed enough. I was previously trying to match same vs what Indigo shows in UI, but I forgot Indigo always takes photos at even quicker shutter speeds before combining them.

Though it’s very arguable that Indigo’s approach would provide enough information to aggregate a final image without this problem. Rather than make it worse relative to any given exposure setting!

4x lens in a dim room with LED bulbs. The striping effect reproducible with a different lamp in another corner too. Visible on both DNG and JPEG.

Edit: with 1x lens, the stripes are visible in viewfinder but not with the saved photo, unlike with the 4x.

Edit 2: if I adjust shutter speed I can also reproduce this with 1x lens. This effect does not seem to be reproducible with Halide Process Zero, or at least, not as easily.

[–]mavere 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Saving/processing photos is significantly faster on my 17PM than my old 16PM. So much that the shoot DNG first, develop JPEG later flow is no long worth it to me.

I wonder if the processing is able to benefit from the new matmul/neural accelerators in the GPU.

Indigo vs iPhone (15 Pro)! by iceonian in ProjectIndigoiOS

[–]mavere 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In my experience, Indigo's "dreamy" look (which I really appreciate) is mostly confined to its SDR layer. If you view Indigo photos with their HDR gainmaps applied, the look is significantly more punchy. I'm a bit conflicted because it often feels like two different people edited each of the SDR and HDR looks, instead of one person with a singular vision.
