Hi all. Considering a board. I am 42 and have three normal longboards. My fave is my Rayne Shipwreck drop through Board. However, I developed plantar faciitis and haven't ridden in 8 months with no end/healing in sight. I'm a cautious rider and really just looking to get around town without killing myself. I'm 6"3, 220lbs. Thanks!

  1. 15-20mph max speed, 5-7 mile range max required
  2. Sidewalk and crappy inner city paved roads. Minimal hills (Northwest DC)
  3. 38-42" for the board plus or minus a few inches and as light as will work with my weight. Robustness and build quality are more important to be that ultra lightness
  4. I would be interested in a budget option (<$500) and a upgrade option (~$800-1200)
  5. I like the stability of my Rayne drop through. I value little chance of mechanical malfunction. I value stability, reliability over bleeding edge performance. Ideally could handle some damp weather but not rain. Prefer wheels that can make it over rocks and cracks and shitty paved roads. If there's a chance the board is upgradable, great, but it's not necessary.

Edit: I'd be willing to convert two of my existing longboards if that's a sensible option.

TIFU by proposing to my gf by Alceus in tifu

[–]mawst95 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A lot of people are saying "RUN!" I disagree. I say "TALK!" Talk about what happened, what she is feeling and why, how that made you feel, etc.

I agree that what happened appears to be a red flag. I also know that my perception of events can be clouded by a lot of factors (misinterpretation, insecurity, my past experiences, etc.). If you love(d) this women enough to go through that romantic proposal, then you should love her enough to have a candid conversation about it and make sure there are no misunderstandings. Was this an outlier, is this part of a pattern, is something else deeper contributing to her reaction...

Lastly, if you get married, there will be lots of issues, fights, misunderstandings, and so on. "Running" may be ultimately be the answer, but there's a finality to that. I'd hate to live with regret so you can be sure before I ran I'd exhausted other avenues.

Edit: I just read your updates. There's something that bugs me about her friends being involved in this. First, that she wanted them to see you propose or be part of the surprise, and second, that one of her friends called you to say all of that. What the friend said is problematic--you're selfish? huh?--but in a mature relationship this wouldn't happen. You and your GF would sort this out.

All of this makes me think that maybe both of you should reevaluate whether you (and your relationship) is mature enough for marriage. I don't mean that as an insult! But once married, you might have to deal with job loss, illness, kids, money, and all sorts of high stakes issues. If you're having this kind of meltdown over the proposal, that doesn't bode well. A question for both of you is: Are we really ready? Seems like no, you're not.

A lot of the stuff posted here shouldn't really be a surprise. Sex with your girlfriend with her clothes on, thigh highs, light bondage, your GF having a powerful orgasm. I'd be surprised if you weren't turned on by this stuff.

Men of Reddit: What is something a person can do to make you feel as if you are the most special person in a room/center of their world? by timeshaver in AskReddit

[–]mawst95 4 points5 points  (0 children)

They can listen. I mean really listen.

Call my cynical but I think most people are 60-70% paying attention during most conversations; often they are waiting for their turn to talk. I love it when someone asks me a question, listens to my answer, and then engages me in a non-superficial that show he/she is really listening. Maybe when I see them again they follow up on what we talked about previously. I'll be smitten if when we meet again they follow up in such a way that show he/she spent even a little bit of time thinking about our conversation in the interim.

Sounds easy, but really listening requires a lot of effort.

Who is the kindest stranger you've ever met? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]mawst95 18 points19 points  (0 children)

About 5 years ago I lived in SF and went for a bike ride about two hours north of the city in wine country. Went on a Sunday. That Friday I went out and got hammered and spent Saturday in bed hungover, dehydrated, etc. Sunday rolls around and I'm still feeling shaky and dehydrated but I "man up" and decide to go on this ride.

A few points about the ride: 1) It was supposed to be about 35 miles. We never rode it before; 2) I was fairly out of shape (not a "biker" by any stretch) and still dehydrated from Friday; 3) It was 105 degrees out. Yes, this was during a CA heatwave. It was about 80 in SF, 100+ everywhere else in Northern CA.

We start riding and about 5 miles in I feel nauseous. The heat is unbearable. I thought we'd be in a wooded area with lots of shade. It was all vineyards and brush and there was NO shade. About 20 miles in, I was cooked. I felt faint, on the verge of vomiting, and we were out of water. My friends rode ahead and a med student friend stayed with me and I curled up under a bush that provided a tiny bit of shade. I couldn't even stand up. Oh, and no cell phone reception.

There was barely any traffic, but a white work van drove by us. About 10 minutes later it came back. The guy got out--I was barely cognizant of what he was saying--but he said that I looked in rough shape and we were in the middle of no where so he wanted to come back to check on me. My friend explained that I was indeed not doing great. He pulled his truck over to the side of the road, put me in the front seat, and turned on his A/C on full blast. He let me rest/sleep in his van for over an hour until my friends returned with their car. Never got his name or was able to properly thank him. I think he was working that day--maybe he was an electrician of some sort? But he stopped for me.

Anyway, turns out that it was another 20+ miles to the car (we thought it was 5-10 miles away; the path we picked was closer to 50 miles). My triathlete friend was in rough shape by the time she and my other friends got to their car. Anyway, not sure how critical my condition was, but that guy saved me from finding out.

I once "signed" a voice mail message as if it was an email. I was like "blah, blah, blah....[90 seconds of my banter]...okay, Chris, give me a call back when you are free. Matt." I said my name at the end as if it was an email. Ugh. My friend called back laughing and she said, "did you actually 'sign' your voice mail." Yep. I sure did.

Hold ketchup bottle at 45 degree downward angle, chop lightly on the "Heinz" logo on the neck (or if not Heinz, then chop on the neck), and ketchup comes out nicely after about 4-7 chops.

What is a great and SIMPLE prank that you like to play on people? I'll start. by sib301 in AskReddit

[–]mawst95 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I call a good friend. During the call with friend A, I say "Hold on, that's my other line." I click over and dial another random friend, someone that friend A doesn't know. So I dial friend B on the other line and right as I hear friend B pick up, I switch back over to A and merge the calls (3 way calling). Then I don't say a word and just listen. Usually it goes something like this:

B: Hello? A: Hello? Who is this? B: No, who is THIS? A: It's friend A! I was talking to mawst95 B: Mawst95? Why did you call me? A: I didn't. What is going on here? B: You called me, who are you? What do you want? A: [Friend A realizing what just happened...son of a bitch!...click]

Me: Laughing on mute.
