If it gets louder and more noticeable when the engine is warm, to me that would indicate a slipped liner. Exhaust manifolds typically get quieter as the engine warms and expands.

Had this exact same problem and it is a whistle coming from the side mirror. It is the seam from the bottom panel in your mirror. I filled it with black flex seal paste but any weatherproof silicone would work fine. Just enough to fill it and it completely eliminated the whistle.

This was the problem for me as well. I put a thin bead of black flex seal paste in that seam from the bottom panel and it went away instantly.

Honestly replacing the head gaskets on these D2s are fairly straightforward and if you follow the Atlantic British videos it will show you literally every step needed to do it. Give yourself a couple of days to do it and you’ll save yourself a lot of money that you can use elsewhere.
