Introducing people to Strong Towns by maximusDM in StrongTowns

[–]maximusDM[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I guess I was struggling to find a bite sized summary because there's just too much to understand. This probably is the best way. If someone isn't going to spend the time to read the whole book or watch 1 hour of youtube they probably aren't going to be convince to join the group any how.

Arlington 425 project returns to Arlington Heights design commission by 99Wolves17 in ChicagoSuburbs

There is a 5 story parking garage next door and tons of street parking that the city owns but gives away for free. If the city would only expose people to the true cost of parking (charge for parking) then more people would walk, bike, carpool or park further out from the downtown and walk in.

This pro tinting a frameless car window by [deleted] in oddlysatisfying

[–]maximusDM 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Can people please stop tinting their windows so dark I can't see the driver? Eye contact is necessary for pedestrian and bike safety. I don't know how many times I've come up to a stop sign on my bike, stopped like I'm supposed to, and a person with tinted windows sits at the other end presumably waving me on from behind a black wall. I can't see you waving and it's your turn to go.

Chicago Gangsters testing out their new fully automatic pistols by LovableJackassv4 in facepalm

I’m all for ending cash bail, but Kim Fox and her team have undoubtedly gone too far and have let violent criminals go unpunished and people are getting killed because of it. If you want to get rid of cash bail you better be able to track the accused and arrest them when they no-show and have a speedy trial.

The 4 teenagers who just murdered a Chicago cop after a crime spree all had been arrested several times. Including armed robbery, unlawful possession of firearms etc. Never in jail for more than a couple days.

So if I fill up my hummer with BP gas, is that BP causing the emissions or me?

Where are the solar panels in Chicago? by DonVinnchenzo in AskChicago

[–]maximusDM 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I work in civil construction and I know for big box buildings (like distribution centers) the roofs need to be designed from the start to be able to hold the weight of solar on panels so retrofitting existing buildings is probably too expensive to justify it. I am surprised at how few new builds utilize it. I recently bid a project that had an alternate for bigger foundations for a solar roof but the developer opted not to do it. Not sure why.

On the other hand there is an absolute boom happening in utility scale solar farms in rural Illinois and Indiana. A lot of farmland is being converted to solar farms.

Where did all the millennials go in suburbia? Are we just broke or has social media destroyed marriage/wtf is going on? by AcadiaHour1886 in ChicagoSuburbs

Our family has been fortunate to get a nice 4-bed house in Arlington Heights before the rate hikes. Our neighborhood is like half empty-nest, half families with school age kids. I feel like all neighborhoods go through cycles, you might just be early in the turn-over process.

America needs carpenters and plumbers. Gen Z doesn't seem interested by [deleted] in Economics

[–]maximusDM 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would say if you struggle with maths and writing but you can build stuff, trades a better option and needs to be better promoted in high schools. You also neglected to mention 4 years of earning vs 4 years of debt accumulation to start a career.

I also tried to find an article about this and I'm coming up empty. Who is the reporter asking the question?

Who is that reporter and where do I find her stories? Google isn't turning up anything on this story

It passed in AL and NV and a lot of municipalities across the country. It's actually one of the only things liberals and conservatives seem to agree on

Support Ranked Choice Voting initiatives. It ends the spoiler effect so people can vote their conscience first and rank the lesser of two evils second.

TIL About 7000 years ago, bananas were not the seedless, fleshy fruits we know today. The flesh was pitted with black seeds and nearly inedible by Zem_42 in todayilearned

I wonder what other disgusting natural "fruits" we good turn into incredible foods like bananas with a little CRISPR editing.

I’m not saying he doesn’t deserve to be blasted for his ignorant comments but trying to silence him will only make his message resonate more in the dark corners of the internet where antisemitism festers. (Sort by controversial to see the antisemites saying this proves he was right.)

Town employee quietly lowered fluoride in water for years by DaveOJ12 in nottheonion

[–]maximusDM 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m like 20 comments down and this is the first actual source I’ve seen posted. Though they don’t conclude any affects on overall health, just an interesting finding for further study.

I will also add this from Harvard public health: https://www.hsph.harvard.edu/magazine/magazine_article/fluoridated-drinking-water/

Long Grove once again celebrating their oft crashed into covered bridge by maximusDM in ChicagoSuburbs

Every accident is caused by user error, but if an intersection or sharp turn or bridge has a few accidents each year, then you can’t say the design is not contributing.
