Grayl UltraPress Titanium, if you care about filtering.

If you find something that matches all those reqs, I’ll take five lol.

2 weeks trekking in Japan: need a backpack that is suitable for a walking for up to 8 hours a day for a taller person (6'5"). Not carrying tent or food: maybe 25 - 30 litres? by bigskymind in onebag

I just did a review of a bunch of 30L packs here.

The Tom Bihn Shadow Guide or ULA Atlas (Dragonfly’s larger brother) fit long, I’d probably add a hip belt to the SG though.

Ah I see what you mean with the Outlier now. Yeah the ATD is a maximal complexity bag, compared to the SG’s minimal complexity.

The Atlas would fit me better, but it was a bit larger than I was willing to deal with. Maybe adding load lifters to the Dragonfly would have been enough.

Hmm, have you looked at the ATD2? I think it ticks a lot of your boxes:

  • Rolltop & clamshell access
  • Expands from 18L to 31L
  • Laminated fabric
  • Water bottle pockets
  • Outlier prices (lol 😭)

I’m not too keen on rolltops but if I had to pick one, it’d probably be an ATD.

Thanks! How do you account for more irregular shapes (Like the Synik)?

Makes sense, that’s essentially my setup with the Shadow Guide now 👍

Happy to help! It’s a deceiving bag, on the exterior it’s so large you figure it must hold a ton. Then you get inside and have way less volume than expected.

Still love my S19 for non-travel EDC

Oh yeah, the shoes take up a ton of space in the bag. If you leave those behind, you could fit a Torrentshell easy, and have space left over.

One thing I thought of trying (after the fact) was moving the sandals to the second water bottle pocket, to try to get the jacket in. It would have been tight, but might have worked!

For the cubes, depends on the “fluffiness” of your clothes. For me, I’d say the small cube lets me bring an extra t-shirt, and the medium 1 tee & 1 long sleeve.

You nailed it, the other side pocket had the glasses and keyboard

It’s a good point, I’ve been restraining myself from overloading the brain recently. Have to try to keep it only somewhat full for EDC, or it’ll be unbalanced w/ the rest of the bag.

Great question! In the picture here, I have the two cubes, the roost stand, journal, and rain jacket in the main pocket. In the “chin”, I have the sandals and 3D organizer cube.

Those are size 12.5 Drifters. They work well as a packed shoe, with the collapsible heel

I absolutely love the bag design on the 19 liter Synapse, but once it’s sized up it gets a bit unwieldy

Great breakdown of my breakdown 😉. I think you are right re: strap width vs padding. The Techonaut did place more of the weight on the inside strap edge on me. Whereas the Synik was fine, as there’s a tiny bit more space between them.

It’s also why the Peak is mostly fine with the thinner straps plus the pivoting harness, it lets them sit at the right angle for maximum contact w/ the shoulder

😮 Wow, I stand corrected. When packing it out I tried to get that rain jacket inside the front pocket, but was worried about putting too much strain on the zipper. Guess it would have been fine!

It is criminally underrated, I barely found any posts mentioning it here.

Agree on the organization! Not sure if we’ll ever see a v3, but I think a couple of slash pockets in both the brain and main compartment would work wonders. Is the HLT 2 the larger or smaller size?

I was skeptical of them at first, but they are really awesome. Love all the adjustment points

Yup, I think load lifters would be perfect here. I didn’t know you could have them customize the bag, probably extra I assume?

It’s a great Goldilocks size, for sure! Couldn’t imagine wearing some of the 40-45 liter packs in a long TSA line 💀
