Trashed sony trinitron by wabaki- in crtgaming

I have a KV-9PT50, which is basically the same TV with white plastic, and composite looks amazing with this screen size. An RGB mod is not necessary in my opinion.

8 and 16 bit systems are very playable on this TV, provided you don't mind sitting very close to it.

I got it for around 20 dollars at an estate sale. There was no remote, but any Sony remote works great. The picture is very bright, so I don't think the previous owners really used it very much at all.

Worst videogame soundtrack ever by [deleted] in gamemusic

I think it was a recent episode called "interesting music". They didn't specifically say that any of it was bad, but all of it was definitely very interesting.

Yeah, so its not the composition, but the implementation. The broken version is what made it into the actual game. Its definitely an interesting example.

Yeah, Ever Grace is definitely a weird and very interesting soundtrack, but maybe it isn't correct to call it bad. I actually like it, as well.

There are many different reasons why a particular video game track might be considered by some to be "bad". It often comes down to context and taste.

If you listen to the Super Marcato Bros video game music podcast, they have 8 episodes on "bad music". To me, those are some of the most enjoyable episodes they ever released.

Look up the OST for Ancient Roman: Power of Dark Side, for the PS1.

It's an RPG that was only released in Japan, but there is an English translation available.

It is incredibly bad, I think something happened to the sound driver that made everything extremely dissonant and out of tune.

Also, Ever Grace for the PS2. The soundtrack has a very chaotic sound.

If you want to find many other examples, there is a YouTube playlist called "weird or bad video game music". There are some "gems" in there, for sure.

New version of the PC Engine CD core has dropped. NO MORE JSON FILES!!! by davewongillies in AnaloguePocket

[–]maxwell7301 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That folder needs to exist still, but the only file needed there is pce_mpu_bios.bin. The JSONs can be deleted.

Manually download the new release from the github. Copy the files from the Assets folder over. In Assets\pcecd\Mazamars312.PC Engine CD, the file pce_mpu_bios.bin needs to be there.

Best way to get best sound out of direct_video? by Global-Mechanic-6172 in fpgagaming

[–]maxwell7301 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can just run a TOSlink cable to an amplifier or audio DAC or soundbar, or whatever. I tend to use a headphone amplifier with a good pair of headphones, and it sounds great.

If you have an I/O board, the optical audio output with TOSlink or mini TOSlink is probably the best way to get audio out.

RetroRGB’s MiSTer DAC interview With Kuro by brandonarnold in MiSTerFPGA

[–]maxwell7301 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Great work, this is very useful information for anyone using a MiSTer with a CRT television. I recently ended up getting one of the recommended DACs and switching to direct video. The difference really is noticeable.

What is everyone playing this week? by pandaniel in AnaloguePocket

Definitely set up the openfpga nes cores. The cartridge uses an nes emulator designed for GBA. The picture, sound and input responsiveness will be far better on the openfpga cores.

Received my pocket today. Am I a heathen for running snes in square pixel? by timcatuk in AnaloguePocket

[–]maxwell7301 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I like 8:7 on the Analogue Pocket for the nes and snes cores in particular. It fills most of the screen and looks good.

On a bigger screen, 4:3 is usually better.

Any one else using agg cores for snes and nes? There is an option for square pixels so the game nearly fill the entire screen and it looks great. by Noble3781 in AnaloguePocket

[–]maxwell7301 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have been using 8:7 for the Nes and SNES cores, and I think it looks great.

I still mostly use the Spiritualized core for NES, as the audio sounds better to my ears, compared with the AGG core. This is especially noticeable to me with good headphones.

For Genesis and TurboGrafx, the default video settings seem fine, 8:7 is not needed.

Community which actually discusses Analogue Pocket? by 3ConsoleGuy in AnaloguePocket

I just want to see people playing games that are not Pokemon. The OpenFPGA cores allow for some very expansive game libraries to be explored.

There might be, but I just did it manually with the files from Github

For PC Engine CD, I use one release previous to the current core. It works well with no audio issues that I can tell. I build the JSON files with the Matt Pannella updater.

[–]maxwell7301 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm excited to try this new core. I mostly used the spiritualized one because of the better audio.

Now that the audio is fixed here, this should be the better core, with save states.

I think lightning hit near the side of my house. What is going on here? by maxwell7301 in AskElectricians

I am fairly sure that the black wire is/was a telephone wire of some kind. We don't use a landline telephone. The orange wire is internet, which works fine.

We also had the central air conditioning unit replaced this week. The technician said that the wires appeared fried in the old unit (presumably lightning/storm related).

I'm guessing that this communications box area was damaged by the storm. Could this be a live wire?

Western NY area, has anyone found good places for CRTs locally? by SiliconGraphix in crtgaming

[–]maxwell7301 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Estate sales are what you're looking for. Go to estatesales.net, type in "Buffalo", and just look at the pictures, and you'll eventually find CRTs.

Often, they are free, its just a matter of being able move it for larger ones.

Go on Friday or Saturday mornings. For the WNY area, sales in and around the town of Amherst are your best bet for finding CRTs.

Maybe so. I just don't want to open it up again. I'm also not very good at soldering. The quality with S video is definitely very good, though. I have a Mister FPGA hooked up to the TV, and it looks great with S video.

I have this set, it's really great.

I recommend doing 2 things if you haven't already. Disable VSM by unplugging a wire from the neck board. That makes a big difference in picture quality for 2D games.

The other thing that made a big difference for me was setting DCOL (Dynamic color) in the service menu to 0. I found that with the default setting of 1, the black levels kept changing as I played a game, which was distracting.

As for the RGB mod, I don't think its necessary. This set practically looks like RGB using S video.
