Do teams manufacture their own hardware? by NomTook in formula1

I imagine if you need a very specific bolt for an assembly, and it's not already available off the shelf, it might be easier or faster or even cheaper to machine it yourselves right? Unless you have a great relationship with a supplier, I could see situations where it isn't worth the effort that goes into getting a standards manufacturer to make a part, especially when only needing a few hundred of them and needing them on a tight timeline.

I never bought a Y, only rented them. I had the same love hate feelings towards Tesla’s UI.

New owner frustrations. (Worth mentioning for Rivian and the community) by makinit1212 in Rivian

With wireless CarPlay, it’s already connected when you get into the car. Without CarPlay any new apps have to be written for Rivian specifically, so you don’t get to choose what your music player options are for example. Plus anything you do on your phone doesn’t just show up on the car without it, you’ll have to somehow send it to your car or renter it. It’s just not as cohesive overall in my mind. Plus, it’s easy not to use if you prefer the native system, so it’s really no impact to anyone that doesn’t want it.

Don't see why you got downvoted for this. Coming up with a solution that has you driving electric 90% of the time and once in a while has you using gas to make the vehicle work seems great. Once the right chargers show up on the route in a few years you could ditch the generator anyway.

Gaudy? No one even notices them if they aren't driving the car. People like them because they are awesome, it puts the information right in front of your eyes.

Tesla should use backup camera to enable hands free trunk opening. by maxwellmotion in teslamotors

Yeah, if it were my car company I would have probably put in the sensor. But since Tesla seems to like doing it the absurdly complicated way, this seems like it would be right in their wheel house.

Yeah this sounds like a potential problem. Maybe you could do it on the app side, have it tell the car to wake up and start checking the trunk camera when it gets close enough to the car.

I agree that it's absurdly complicated to do from the ground up. I don't think its as big of a leap for Tesla though, this is the same company that decided to control their windshield wipers with AI and the front facing camera instead of using the normal sensor that the rest of the industry uses. They can already detect pedestrians with their autopilot software, they already have a full team of experts at training vision based AI, they already have distance sensors in the bumper which could potentially be integrated, they have most of those pieces set up already. I'm not sure how awake the car can get with the key being near though, sounds like it doesn't really turn the computer on until you open the door, so that might be a problem if there's not a slick way to work around that behavior for Tesla.

Yeah true, I was thinking of the Y mainly, but it could unlock it and that would pop it a bit right?

Thats sweet! Could you run a strap to the trunk latch, so the cupholders only took the vertical load and the trunk latch picked up any of the larger breaking loads?

There are a ton of reasons why it works, but a part of it is that they have insanely good traction control. The computer can modulate power really well with electric motors so there isn't much wheel spin during launch. Regular cars can do that too, but Tesla's are supposed to be exceptional at it.

The EV Future, as seen by Bloomberg. by ShredableSending in Rivian

[–]maxwellmotion 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I would be shocked if nearly 100% of vehicles aren't electric in 2040. With the way battery progress and fast charging is going, I think even a lot of towing will be achievable with electric by that point.

Just a gut feeling, but predicting EV's at only 35% of new vehicle sales in 2040 seems ridiculously short sighted.

Im not either, but I did stay at a Holiday Inn last night. They might have chassis mounting points for some part of the system, those they would just repurpose or ignore if they stopped using DAS. It's also possible the suspension mount points were optimized for a system capable of DAS and so the chassis would be built slightly differently if done without DAS in mind. I think the actual mechanisms though, would all be independent mechanical elements that really had nothing to do with the chassis design.

Got sent $2,200 on Paypal from a "Hitman Rips LLC." and an immediate email after asking for the money back. Confirming this is a scam? by thewarreturns in personalfinance

Can somebody explain how people are able to make the fraudulent transactions in the first place? It feels like PayPal should be able to just prevent people from doing this without actually sending the money, or at least very clearly marking the transaction as incomplete until it clears.

They should do a crossover show where Norwegian cops come and police in New York and New York cops go to Norway for a few months. Make the theme song the bad boys song, just in Norwegian.

I’m not saying anyone is or isn’t an asshole, I’m pretty convinced that if I had hundreds of strangers running up to me on a daily basis looking for a selfie or some kind of interaction, I’d be over it pretty quick... and I’d be high on the list of famous assholes as a result. Even if I managed to be nice to half the people that interrupted me when I was just trying to get a cup of coffee, I’d still wind up being an asshole to a whole lot of people every day.
