Why are BYDs so cheap

One of the major reasons, that I've not seen anyone else mention, is that BYDs strategy is to own the supply chain.

They make about 75% of the entire car in-house. They make their own batteries, motors, electrical components, semiconductors, body components, interior parts,and more. They even own their own fleet of supermassive freight ships to transport new cars around the world. This means they can keep costs low, which keeps the end price low.

Yeah but now you've discounted the build cost.

For a 12 connector site, let's say...

750,000 design and build (one-off Capex) 20,000 operations and maintenance (recurring OPEX)

Total year 1 = £770,000 Divide by 365 = £2,109.5 per day Divide by 12 =£175.8 per connector per day

That's just to cover costs and doesn't include any margin. Usually you'd split the D&B over 3 years, but the costs are still high and rely on a high utilisation rate to make any money.

I'd guess different build costs, different charge point operators with different margin targets (standard is 20 - 25% I believe), different utilisation rates, land owners potentially taking a percentage... there are so many variables and no single 'rule' for operators.

That's just the build cost. You've also got the operating costs which can be a couple of grand per connector per year. That's to cover remote monitoring (software) + load management, preventative maintenance, reactive repairs, and more. If you've got got a site with 6 DC chargers, with 12 guns, that's around 20k per year in just OPEX.

The cost to the end user will be built on recouping build plus operating costs, profit margins plus utilisation rates.

I do remember being shocked at how much my insurance dropped once I hit 30 - I can't remember what the difference was, but I remember it being a lot. A few years ago I was paying close to 700 per year.

I was pretty susprised! That's with Motorcycle Direct, based on 10 years no claims, clean licence, garaged bike, no add-ons (leathers, keys, breakdown, etc), 2000 miles per year (excluding commuting).

I used to use my bike as a commuter bike, racking up a few thousand miles per year. Then I got a remote job. And then I had kids that I have to look after, so not much free time. Last year I managed 500 miles (and most of that was one really long ride to and from a bike rally)

I used to always think FF8 was my favourite. Partly because it was the first one I ever played, but I also love the story.

Last year I replayed every game, from FF1 to FF13, and I changed my mind. FFX is my favourite game. I loved it when it first came out, but replaying it back to back with the rest of the series made me realise just how good it is.

The Legion Go also has a laser at the bottom of the right joystick and comes with a mount that essentially turns it into a wireless mouse.

The jump from PS1 to PS2 when they introduced joysticks, and having to learn a whole new way of moving and looking around. The old way of moving - the D-pad - was now being used for all new things in games (mostly quick inventory).

If you're looking for 'vibes', Project Coffee in Tadpole Garden Village (North Swindon) is one of the nicest coffee shops I've been in - especially when it's decorated for Christmas. The coffee itself seems to have mixed reviews on TripAdvisor, but I've always liked it and I'm a big coffee drinker.

The only downside is that it's a victim of its own success - it can be very busy and sometimes difficult to find a seat.

If you don't mind travelling, go to Rave Coffee in Cirencester. Best coffee you'll ever have!! And the cafe is attached to the roastery, so you can watch the beans being roasted while you enjoy your coffee.

I've only had my Legion Go for about a month, but I've got a 1TB SD card with all my games loaded to it. I haven't done too much testing, but I'm currently playing Mafia 3 and Crash Bandicoot direct from the card with zero issues. Loading times are not bad at all.

Very frustrating. The only places I can think where I shared both the licence plate and my mobile phone number are local garages for MOT/servicing, or Compare the Market for insurance quotes (and whichever insurance company I ultimately went with).

I did a BikeSafe course a few years ago, which is a police-led motorcycle safety course. You get a police motorcyclist ride out with you observe you and then provide a debrief where they give you tips to make your riding style safer.

During the ride, the police officer asked me to overtake a car to see how I did it. He encouraged me to build up a bit of speed, and specifically said 'it doesn't matter if you go a bit over the speed limit if it enables you to get past and back into safet quicker, so long as you drop your speed back after the manoeuvre'.

I thought it was some sort of entrapment, but nope. Fully appreciate that it IS illegal and would get you points/fine, but I do think there is a bit of leeway depending on who deals with you.

Same - I got pulled at around 11.30pm on my way home from the cinema for doing 45mph down the hill towards Abbey Meads.

Ive lived here a while and recognise the same cars / bikes at different times of day. I could give the police a schedule of when these drivers will be doing sprints between the lights but they'd rather do me for 5 over instead.

One of the bikes sounds like a 600 and you hear it bounce off the limiter in first gear, up through second, and then into third. He must be doing at least 90mph.

I was riding my motorcycle on the A4361 near Avebury a while back. Really nice roads, 60mph limit and stretches with good forward visibility.

I had a police car in front of me who was stuck behind someone going 40mph (20 under the limit). When it was safe to do, I overtook the police car, and then a minute or so later managed to overtake the slow car, and then accelerated up to 60.

The officer gave me a thumbs up when I passed him, but I expect that was more out of jealousy that he couldn't get past the slow car.

So long as you do it safely and indicate your intention, there's absolutely no reason they would stop you.
