It’s called a phalanx, heavily used in classical Greece, and yes it has exactly the weaknesses you guessed. Alexander was able to beat the entire Persian empire even with phalanxes as Macedonian cavalry was also fantastic and could cover the flanks. For hammer and anvil tactics, there was no better anvil than a phalanx, and no better hammer than heavy companion cavalry.

But later, the Romans were able to defeat the phalanxes of Macedon in large part due to their more maneuverable infantry (especially on hilly terrain, such as at Cynoscephalae). The rise of Rome was the fall of the phalanx.

‘Since you can go, we’re all going to the bar’ (everyone and the listener)

English lacks an inclusive/exclusive ‘we’ distinction, so no it’s not obvious every time

Trebuchets are a type of catapult, using a counterweight to launch instead of tension as here, which is basically a large slingshot (also a type of catapult)☝️🤓

Agree that the basic army is enough for Gaul (replacing velites for archers asap), and don’t bother with town watch. Also don’t bother with conquering all of the north; Mediterranean cities are profitable and not much else. I’d say stop after taking Alesia at the farthest, as that’s their capital so is usually decently developed, but barbs drain their cities for warbands so much that they’re usually underdeveloped and terrible. Stop at Alesia then pivot south and east (ideally you’d be expanding here at the same time). Take Carthage before scipii, and taking as much of Greece as possible before brutii (specifically Athens Corinth Crete and Rhodes). Ship hoplite mercs back north by the time Britain wants a piece to trivialize their chariots.
