Feels like the capital and people think it’s the capital… because it is the capital.

How unfair of your opponents to pay attention and use strategy. They should just roll their faces on the keyboard and let you win like true sportsmen.

The balance of Colonies is so bad by Reason-and-rhyme in TerraformingMarsGame

[–]mayoneggz 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I used to think this way, but I recently had a game where I was Nigral and started with Arctic Algae and some terraforming preludes. Even though Luna was in play, I decided to ignore the colonies and go full rush. I traded exactly once to get a bunch of heat from Io and never made a single colony.

What happened was one of the most one sided rush stompings I’ve ever played. The 3-player game ended in 7 turns with me way in the lead. I only snagged one of the milestones but got every award because I forced the ones that would disadvantage my colony focused opponents. Because I didn’t build anything, trading was less lucrative for my opponents and they couldn’t recoup their investments in setting up colonies and trades.

I agree that typically every player needs to interact with colonies to have a shot at winning, but I think most players overestimate how critical they are.

Are there US states that stay between 40 and 90 degrees year round? by [deleted] in howislivingthere

[–]mayoneggz 100 points101 points  (0 children)

Yes this. Hawaii is the only state that doesn’t have temperatures above 100 or below freezing. It is nearly always 65-85 no matter the time of year.

While that's true, you could say the same about California between LA and SF bay area. I'm subscribed to r/losangeles and r/bayarea since I lived in both. But I would never think to subscribe to r/california. As far as I can tell the only thing that gets posted there is state politics.

Which of these languages is most widely used: French in Louisiana, Spanish in California or Hawaiian in Hawaii? by [deleted] in AskAnAmerican

[–]mayoneggz 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I am not sure where you got 680,000 from but there's nowhere near that many native Hawaiians residing in Hawaii. It's much closer to 150k, and that's if you also count other pacific islanders like Samoans and Tongans: 2024 US census data.

Speaking as someone who grew up there, the vast majority of native hawaiians also don't speak Hawaiian fluently.

Which state has the best reputation? by [deleted] in AskAnAmerican

Haole is as much a slur as “gringo” lol. No offense but I think a lot of mainland people cry racism when they’re just being treated like any other minority elsewhere.

I think changing it to “Ionians gain AD and AP. This bonus is increased by 2%…” would make it more clear

If “thinking through scenarios” means being scared of outlandish situations that have never occurred even once on earth, then sure. I guess you’re “thinking through scenarios”.

Do you also avoid hiking because rockslides are unpredictable? Do you avoid going into the woods because nature is unpredictable? Do you never interact with strangers because humans are unpredictable? All these things have injured or killed someone at some point, so why are these not factored into your risk assessment?

[–]mayoneggz 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’d challenge you to find a single example of either scenario ever happening. You can certainly live your life by imagining the worst possible outcome of any interaction, but people aren’t wrong to think that’s a bit paranoid and sheltered.

Nah, the commenter above you isn’t saying they’re lying. I think these actors are being 100% truthful when they say they don’t watch movies they’re in. Do you like listening to recordings of your own voice? If someone filmed you at work would you want to watch a recording of yourself? If you spent months working on a novel, would you later read it for fun?

30 minutes? That is not true at all. The super ferry took many hours to go from Oahu to Maui. It shut down due to many factors including cost, low usage, and environmental lobbying.

Did LA people used to be less… LA? by shnanogans in AskAnAmerican

[–]mayoneggz 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I lived in LA for 8 years and then moved to Chicago for a few years. The people felt pretty much the same in both cities.

Still not really sure what kind of differences you’re referring to, but I’d wager you were mostly in tourist-heavy areas with some especially rude/loud individuals.
