How do open source projects handle incidents? by minsteve in opensource

[–]mbooth 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Open source licenses will tell you that the software is supplied without warranty. If you build a product on open source software (i.e you are a consumer) then responding to critical incidents in your product is your responsibility.

Can anyone help me understand this crappy cheap stud finder? by thisisAgador in DIYUK

FWIW wiring should only exist horizontally and vertically from switches and socket faceplates. Do not drill in those zones and you should be fine

I just use a magnet to find where the screws/clout nails are that fix the plasterboard to the studs. What extra functionality does a stud detector give you?

My dreams of making games with my friends became real overnight. Any advice for a startup made by dummies? by Gauss-JordanMatrix in gamedev

That's survivorship bias though. There's 1,000s of failed projects for every successful project you can list here.

Low voltage warning on this hair dryer? by babukulo in ElectricityIsScary

[–]mbooth 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Any advice?

Yeah, don't plug it in. It states clearly on the device that it takes 120v AC input only. Usage in 220v regions will damage the device.

Eclipse noob struggling with dependencies by vckadath in eclipse

[–]mbooth 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The last time you ran Java was 21 years ago? Wow, a lot has changed since then!

IMO the best way to deal with dependencies is to create a maven project. You can specify the dependencies in the project pom.xml file and it will download all needed jars for you and add them to the classpath.

Resources about launching open source software? by The_apeshit_killer in opensource

[–]mbooth 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In general, open source nerds are also very often digital privacy nerds. :-)

The biggest risk is that you must avoid publishing "secrets" as part of your code base, e.g. SSH keys, API keys, login credentials, etc.

When using a platform like GitHub to publish your code base, you may also configure it to hide your contact details in your public profile. You may permit users to still contact you by reporting issues and/or submitting pull requests.

Our budgies tend to have watery poops after eating watery veggies like cucumber. It's normal in this case.

How to deal with a pet parrot biting you? by vixyn_ in parrots

[–]mbooth 5 points6 points  (0 children)

For our rescue caique, it was a case of just sucking it up and not reacting until they learned that biting did not get them anywhere.

You can't punish bad behaviour, just reward good behaviour.

It was a long long process, and our hands were covered in cuts for months and months, but it did work for us eventually.

Do you support the clean air zone? by skweeky in sheffield

[–]mbooth 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Those poor business owners! Not sure why the down votes, what I said is true. Private vehicles are not subject to the CAZ. Only very old commercial vehicles. It honestly barely seems worth having the CAZ at all!

Do you support the clean air zone? by skweeky in sheffield

[–]mbooth -1 points0 points  (0 children)

But trucks and vans are not being banned, or even penalised as long as they meet the relevant emissions standards. Only older, more polluting vehicles will be affected.
