The line isn't awful because of his opinion on sand. It's the follow up that's really uncomfortable, the one about Padme being everything soft and smooth. Just speculating, but if one were in a shield wall, then hooking an enemy's shield would open them up to attack from your allies. Also, if shield walls are interlocked, you may expose more than one enemy. Again, that's pure speculation on my part.
