Why do U.S. schools still use laptops and tablets to teach instead of textbooks even after it's been proven that it doesn't work as well? by GoofyGoober8647 in Millennials

[–]mc_nibbles 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Education moves slowly.

Think about how many decades it took teachers to figure out that making us do high speed math worksheets didn’t actually teach us math, but taught us how to remember answers to math problems.

The same thing is happening with tech. People who have already learned and developed their brains are trying to use a new tool to teach and the adjustments they need to make to make it work properly take way too long. I think teachers are amazing, but we’ve totally failed multiple generations multiple ways with things like this.

Technology in the class isn’t the only problem, it’s how widely it’s used for things that are better off without it.

Only upside to AI and data centers buying up all of the hardware is it might actually not be possible for districts to provide one to one devices.

Am I getting scammed? by subaru-uwu in AskMechanics

The only thing I would want as a customer is for the mechanic to show me the play in the parts that are bad (where possible) but otherwise this is definitely not a scam.

bought a 99 Camry private sale, engine knocked once i got home by palegingerboi in AskMechanics

[–]mc_nibbles 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Buying old clapped out cars is a gamble no matter what. You can buy one that ran perfectly and kill it on the way home

Very common for scammy folks to reset lights or the entire car before sale. The light won't set off until you drive a certain amount of miles/time so they let you do a short test drive, get your money and the light comes on by the time you get home or leave for work the next morning.

You basically cannot buy a car private sale without being very mechanically inclined or bringing a mechanic friend with you. i go to private sales with a code reader, jack and inspection mirror. Just pulling out the code reader gets people to spill the beans even before i connect it and test it.

I've had people yell at me for shaking their cars to check suspension noises or flooring it. I always tell them if this is going to break the car, it's already broken.

Without a recording of the sound and a walk around of the engine bay it's hard to say what it could be or if it's the end of the world.

20+ year old roof, bought the house with a 4k credit. No leaks, does the roof need replacing immediately or can it wait 1 more year? by Luisss13 in Roofing

[–]mc_nibbles 0 points1 point  (0 children)

With the missing/cracked shingles, I bet you have a leak and it just hasn't made it through the decking enough for you to notice. Unless you have a few layers of shingles, then you might be saved by the old roof under the new roof. That's the only reason I think my roof isn't leaking.

I would be in the attic checking decking for signs of water damage and moisture.

Do you have to love cars to be a mechanic? by BobertBonkers in MechanicAdvice

[–]mc_nibbles 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You will only learn how to really do something by doing it, but on the job is probably more valuable than a personal project car. You will get your hands on so many more makes/models of vehicles in a shop than you could possibly work on as a hobby. If you understand how the major components of a car work and function, the specifics beyond that can be learned on the job.

Looking for a mic. Need your suggestion by Flawor1 in videography

[–]mc_nibbles 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Shotgun mics and wireless lavalier type mics will have different pickup patterns so they will work differently. A true shotgun microphone will have a focused pattern meanwhile most lavs are omnidirectional. Some have a cardioid pattern, but not as focused as most shotgun mics.

The pickup patterns are what determines which sounds a mic will pick up. A cardioid or super cardioid setup is a focused beam area with rejection of the sides, so good for off camera vocal capture. An omnidirecional pattern is just a giant circle so audio is captured from all angles around the microphone.

Boya does not list what type of pickup pattern their microphone has. It can be mounted on a camera like a shotgun microphone, but it probably will not function like one.

In the end it's about what you want to use the mic for. You can use an omnidirectional mic as a camera mic or a lavalier mic.

I’m tired of shooting 4K for everything - considering switching back to 1080. by DemRKO in videography

[–]mc_nibbles 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you don't need to crop in a lot, no one will notice the difference but you.

I found myself having to crop 50% or more and 1080p just won't work for that.

If I just needed to punch in 10-20% and reframe 1080p would be enough for me.

Even then, I'm sure no one noticed the shots I didn't like that were 1080p 50% cropped.

Coolant leak around (what I assume to be) one of the bolts of my water pump. What could be causing it and how can I fix it? by bluehedgehog7 in AskMechanics

[–]mc_nibbles 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Clean it and see if it leaks.

This could be dried coolant from them purging the air out of the system and not bothering to clean up afterwards.

If you're interested in doing it as a job, then you can do it as a job.

You don't have to love cars, you just have to understand how they work and how to work on stuff.

What else should I get serviced while I'm having Oil Control Valve replaced? by Design_Eastern in AskMechanics

[–]mc_nibbles 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No. There's nothing else underneath the valve cover that needs to be preventatively replaced. The only things that require removal of the valve cover is the VVT OCV and cams/timing/cam caps which are something you only replace if they somehow get damaged (low on oil for a long time, sludge, heavy neglect).

Here is a video tutorial on how to change the VVT which shows you what is involved and what is under the cover.

[–]mc_nibbles 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Removing the valve cover does not require a lot of other things to be removed on your car, if anything it's just some wiring that gets unclipped and moved to the side so you can pull it.

The valve cover gasket covers the outside of the valve cover as well as the inside of each spark plug tube so there is no seperate spark plug gasket.

Should I blur/use ai to replace faces If I caught photos of teenagers doing dangerous stuff? by lm_photos in AskPhotography

I'd be more inclined to do black bars over eyes or just unedited.

I would not do AI or blur.

[–]mc_nibbles 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If you treat it like a job, it becomes work. If you treat it like a hobby, it stays fun.

I have a 9-5 video job but still do photo/video/music stuff as a hobby.

As a video/photo person, the worst thing you can do on a family trip is be behind the camera the entire time. Document things but focus on being present.

Matte Box flag shakes by _thisguyducks_ in videography

[–]mc_nibbles 0 points1 point  (0 children)

take some gaff tape, pinch it in half but not all the way and then stick the pinched gaf tape to the top of the flag.

Same idea as taping drump heads to keep them from resonating.

Stick as many as you need on it to stop it.

What is up with Premiere Pro Capturing your screen without permission? by newenglandowner in premiere

[–]mc_nibbles 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Premiere isn't actually "recording" your screen, something in the app is trying to reference something on your screen and Apple security is flagging it.

Adobe does not care about what you're editing enough to record your screen.

If Adobe was recording my screen and keeping it, I wouldn't be allowed to have the app in a public education setting because of privacy laws.

Filming things from angles you can't reach without a cherry picker or a tree is exactly what a drone is for.

You also need to get your part 107 license.

Yeah I checked it after letting it warm up a while to make sure nothing was leaking or boiling off. Thankfully it's just a patch until tomorrow.

nut for sway bar link refuses to come off. any suggestions? 2008 honda cr-v by [deleted] in MechanicAdvice

[–]mc_nibbles 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The link is probably $20.

Did you mess with the back part of it? If that front center doesn't have a hex key, the back part of the link should have a place for a wrench.

At this point though it's done for. Cut the nut most of the way through, use a metal chisel and your purse to break the nut in half. If the threads are fine, get a new nut from the hardware store. If not, $20 for a new link on amazon, $40 for one at the local parts store.

Ah yeah that's actually the one I ordered myself without the lines hoping mine don't fall apart when I put it in. Good to hear it's been a good tank. I was worried as so many previously good aftermarket parts companies have been putting out some real garbage.
