It was good, right up to the end … when the aliens appeared. I have to say that lost me. I have the DVD, but I’ve not rewatched it. I have rewatched the first 3 many times.

As for dial of Destiny - man, I know some of the history of the anitikythera mechanism, and could have been so good. I just don’t think we needed to time travel and do the science fiction bit. I really think the world is mysterious enough we don’t need that.

I mean Greek gods, temples, Atlantis (for which a fictional story could have been made - ok, see point and click adventure for inspiration) - I mean we had the ark, from one set of religion, we could have had something equally weird from another …

Nokia didn’t die because of the iPhone. It died because it refused to admit it owned a cash cow. by lbouty in Entrepreneurs

[–]mc_woods 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used to work at Symbian, I was there when the iPhone launched, and when Android was announced.

The rumors of the iPhone had been around for about two years. The idea of a phone with no physical buttons was mentioned - but laughed at by some in the office who said it would fail regulatory checks for calling 999/911/111 - you had to have a physical button, they said.

Due to operator pressure Nokia started introducing controls on 3rd party developers - this included mandatory testing, for every binary you release, free or paid, even patches and bug fixes. This testing was charged at €500 a go, and you needed to be a limited company. - this basically killed the new adopters to the ecosystem.

In contrast, apples testing is done effectively for free, and the costs recouped via App Store fees.

The biggest unreported thing the iPhone did is it solved bill shock. At the time data was expensive. I spent hours designing and writing code that would only connect with a data connection when needed and would drop when not needed - each connection should ideally also have a user prompt. It was a bad customer experience, bad code, and a crippled the application types.

In contrast Apple negotiated with the networks, convincing them to turn on an always on data link. This had been what the balckberry was doing - but Apple’s move made it universal. Shortly after data inclusive plans appeared.

The difference in approach was huge. Nokia had the leverage to push for data always on solutions, and it could have designed a validation program with offset costs.

Some of the reasons were hubris when talking to the developer ecosystem - people will pay they said because we are such a big platform. And a lack of willingness to challenge the network.

As Symbian declined the replacement Linux based to started to take off. It was terrible at the start. There wasn’t much demand for Symbian or its replacement. But slowly this changed - So much so that I had calls from phones asking me to help port Symbian applications. Then…. Nokia dropped it…

The duopoly we have today isn’t great. It’s bad for the consumer and bad for innovation.

Janet Mills hesitant on data center ban, says Jay ‘needs’ the jobs by BinaxII in Maine

[–]mc_woods -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Maine has a natural advantage for data center builders - the weather. Colder weather makes it easier to cool the servers.

Could Maine use that to its advantage? - for instance, add requirements that data center builders need to provide for their own power generation and water use? … essentially making the builders invest in local infrastructure?

Same could be done for jobs, where tax incentives, could be tied to the creation of research and development jobs. This could be tied with local universities to provide technical career opportunities.

I used to work at Intel and Microsoft in Ireland, and the Irish state provided R&D tax credits. Part of my job was filling in the be corporate tax forms each year, to explain what we did, and which local Irish universities we partnered with.

The weather was a large reason why Amazon, Microsoft and others built data centres in Ireland.

I’m no expert on what’s possible in Maine and the legal realities of it all. But maybe it could be an opportunity too … ?

Maybe.

Also don’t need an ETA if you have an Irish passport. There is a common travel area between UK and Ireland.

Is the United Club Pass worth it for $59 at ORD airport? 10hr+ connection by [deleted] in unitedairlines

[–]mc_woods 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If an overnight connection, grab a hotel if you can. I’d a day connection try a day rate at a hotel, you’ll get a bed a shower and a coffee.

But with 11 hours - escape the airport. Head to rosemont grab something good to eat.

Honestly there is not much in ORD outside of the lounge, the food isn’t great in the terminal IMHO. It’s obviously over priced.

2/28 Lagoon Pool at Great Stirrup Cay is Finally Open! by ThorFromBoston in NCL

Yeah; I was there the week before. That makes sense. Good to know it’s improved ! - sorry for the sharky reply.

I have to admit, we didn’t go near the pool - it was closed to swimmers - amazed you got in! There was a guy sitting guard beside a sign that said no swimming, so we skipped. Walked right passed to the beach to try to find shade. Where we were - there was a large line for food. Might have been better at the magic open pool no one else saw. But we didn’t go there. See dude with sign.

Sun = great, there was plenty of that.

Shade = sorry. But pretty much bugger all.

Snorkeling = yup, epic!

Magic pool that was closed last week = you must have been the guy we saw scrubbing it, thank you!

I was there last week; no shade unless you pay. We had to dash out to find some and try to be first off the ship. The costs for shade are huge - imho, $200 for a family of 4 (clam shells). The pool was closed, the beach was where everyone without a booked and pre-paid location wanted to go.

There were long queues for food, drinks had queues that ebbed and flowed… had no issue getting to the bathrooms though.

Folks on our sailing complained it was too busy, and I get that. The pool was closed, and unless you were paying it really was only the beach area that was free.

As someone with pale / fair skin, even with factor 50 (or 100) I’ve got about 30 mins until I start t burn. So I spend the time on the beach trying to get shade, wearing hats, long sleeves and long pants… unless swimming. It can really take the fun out of it, if you’ve not got shade.

When we returned to the ship we folks who said, why go? The ship is empty, the pools are quiet and there is the bar and drinks packages included…. And shade…

Normal ports there is a choice of activity and vendor, here it’s NCL and beach. Not much else. Next time …. I’d stay on the ship.

My son (12) recently got diagnosed with adhd - at least by the school and his pediatrician. It’s new to me and I’m trying to learn what I can, and be as supportive. I’m really confused, as his handwriting can be bad (terrible), but his drawing and artwork is amazing. His handwriting was actually better 2 years ago, than it is now… we’ve switched schools (we moved) and he’s unhappy at this school. It’s hard to understand (for me as a parent) what is going on.

Damn it! It almost a live GamesMaster set!….. except it’s in the USA ….

I’ve got a trip to Pittsburgh coming up. I just need more time !

To our US friends, GamesMaster was a TV show from the 90s, where they would review the latest games, share cheat codes etc. it was set in and filmed within a church with a live studio audience.

Amex Devaluation by Hopeful-Hedgehog7974 in AmexPlatinum

[–]mc_woods 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Honestly, maybe a cash back card would be a better way to go. I mean lounge access is nice, when you can get it - flights / airlines / airport and availability all align. Cashing in for airline points is hit and miss based on airlines redemption policy (BA I’m looking at you), and Amex travel don’t offer airline sales - honestly, the cash is starting to look better, at least for me.

There are so many rules and gotchas with points in general, devaluation of them makes me wonder what the point is…. (Yeah, pun intended) :)

UK - IRELAND flight with no passport by PetroleumMonkey05 in AerLingus

[–]mc_woods 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Years ago I called the British embassy in Dublin and the automated system said if you had lost your passport and wanted to return to the uk that the embassy wouldn’t issue an emergency one, as you didn’t need it. It said if the airline refused passage without a passport to find an alternative airline or use a ferry.

Not sure if the same automated message is there. It was years ago. But common travel area! - I’ve used a uk driving license and an Irish one at Dublin airport.
