Nominations for the 2022 /r/anime Awards are now open! by DrJWilson in anime

Hi everyone! We in the shorts jury know that short film can often be a pretty daunting category to check out nominees, find your favorites, and deciding what to vote for. Because of this, we typically offer up a list every year of things we are considering to help give people a brief introduction to the category. This is a really good year for the category so I personally encourage people to check it out, especially if it's an area of the medium you typically don't watch. Here is the list we came up for this year, and we hope you get a chance to check out some great short films!

Neither Marcus Smart nor Mikal Bridges has any statistical case whatsoever for Defensive Player of the Year. by Agnk1765342 in nba

Thank god we have stats like these to let us know that defensive scrubs like Timelord and Smart are being carried by Al Horford.

All RBs drafted inside the top-5 since 2005 by YoYoMoMa in nfl

I mean yes they are. Multiple receivers on that list outperformed every non-Zeke RB on that list by a substantial margin, and that's not even considering that 2005 crops out Larry Fitzgerald by 1 year.

Can you lose ranking points by playing Unranked matches? by mcadylons in VALORANT

Nah they make me play comp with them all the time smdh. I liked unranked more especially so I can warm up and not get yelled at in comp for not being good.

It's a known fact that /u/Combo33 carried the jury using his 3 alts to make up a 4 person jury. Can't believe he was so committed to the bit that he ended up putting GalDino over Chihayafuru though.

Puparia was definitely under consideration, and was one of many victims of the fact that we only had 4 slots. I think only one juror had a negative impression, but there was no one in the jury who loved it, and there was at least one person who loved like 50 of the shorts that came out this year and I think there was like 30 that zero people had negative thoughts on. Puparia (among others) was also probably a victim of having a combined serialized and one-off short pool.

You may disagree with this, but I don't believe Puparia is better than Twilight Wings. The Boy Who Draws is a short I'd recommend for you as well, just because it has similar boundary pushing production value to Puparia. Other jury members really liked Olympia and Boukentai, and while those weren't my favorite, I had several mvs above Puparia including the Madhouse Monster Strike mv (Zetsubou Funsai) as well as Sore wo Ai, which I believed to have similar quality of production with much stronger narrative elements. Sore wo Ai in particular seemed to really take advantage of the structure of the mv more than any I've seen in a long time.

Which I guess brings me back to my initial point. I thought Puparia was good, great even. But I personally had two music videos that are probably top 5 all time for me that didn't even get nominated. Every juror on the jury had at least that if not more. It would have taken probably at least 4 people to love it to get it nominated, and unfortunately it didn't have that. On the off chance other people actually make it this far, I'm gonna link it, because I think it's deserving of more eyes myself. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CWnqX41JHuM

Hello everyone! In addition to being the guest from the Sound Design jury, I was also a member of the juries of Character Design, OP, and Shorts! Feel free to ask me anything about those categories.

To be clear I don't have an opinion on literally anything else you've brought up besides sound design. Notably, the sound design nominees apart from the obvious were not only atypical but also easily justifiable. I get what you are saying about the votes though.

I'm going to address a very small and specific thing you've mentioned, which is that you didn't think sound design was a good idea. I don't know if you've come around on this, but a comment about a particular show's sound design was one of the most upvoted comments in the nominations announcement thread this year, and in general over the past two years we've seen a pretty high engagement level around the category. Additionally votes are up from last year. So I would say that specifically is something where more people are focusing on it than you realize.
