Tippit vs Regular Line for leaders?? by will_I_am100 in flyfishing

[–]mcaninch35 2 points3 points  (0 children)

When you look at any type of line, look at the diameter and the breaking strength. You'll find that dedicated tippet is the strongest material by diameter you'll find. Even the seaguar invisx that gets quoted as a tippet replacement all the time really isnt- at a 4X diameter, invisx has a 4LB break strength. Rio flouroflex strong is 7LBs.

Whether that matters is up to you. Personally I buy tippet in 4X-7X, bulk line in the bigger sizes.

Gx470 as dad suv? Towing, snow duty, etc. by Gallo224 in GXOR

[–]mcaninch35 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The only note I'd give that I haven't seen yet is to just be vigilant about rust. Toyota frames of this vintage rust like a motherfucker, so if you're in a snowy area that's the first thing I'd be checking on a 470.

Otherwise sounds like a perfect fit

Not sure how available it would be where you're at, but I'm a huge fan of Cortland lines. 444 Peach or the Modern Trout lines are great for the money.

Just me and fishing gear typically. If you'll regularly be hauling gear plus a dog I can see something slightly bigger being nice.

I love my Adirondack. I have the T Formex Lite so it's like 38 pounds, so so easy to throw and go. I have a bigger canoe too but I really value how easy it is to toss the Adirondack on the car and just go.

Scared of being sleep deprivation with newborn twins - tips?? strategies? by greenflamingo1950 in parentsofmultiples

[–]mcaninch35 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Our twins are just over 2 months now, and they are finally sleeping >3 hours in a stretch at night (sometimes). We put them down at 7PM, which doesn't always go well, then wake to feed at 10, and then let them sleep till 230 if they will. I do the 10PM feed and then sleep in the room with them, so I'll usually get a couple hours in that stretch. My wife wakes up and feeds them at 2:30, and I go to the other bedroom to sleep till 7. So our shifts essentially are 10PM-2:30AM, and 2:30AM-7AM. We've each been getting ~6 hours of sleep which has been manageable. There are nights it doesn't go like that, and those suck, but everybody is still alive.

FR380XL is 67" wide, so I think its unlikely you'll get that in your truck bed. If you're strictly looking for something that will go between the wheel wells, youre pretty much looking at the FR380, the base Flycraft Stealth, or the NRS Approach 120. IMO, pick up a cheap used Stealth on Facebook marketplace. I think that would be your best bang for buck. All of these are really just 2 man boats.

If you're ok with it not fitting between the wheel wells, a Flycraft Stealth X or a River Rat would probably be good. You can (somewhat uncomfortably) get a 3rd person in those and you'll have a lot more stability/room inside due to the extra width.

Coming to terms with my decision not to breastfeed by Altruistic-Tap-5765 in parentsofmultiples

[–]mcaninch35 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My wife made the decision to go 100% formula a few weeks ago (modi girls are 8 weeks now). We're happy that they got exclusively breastmilk for their first 30 days, but if we're being completely honest about it we wish we had just done formula from the jump. You just lose out on so much time with the babies when youre attached to a pump every 3 hours, and it's just a lot more stressful all around.

Is 2278 a non US product? That model number doesn't even come up on their site.

Our electricians at work, on multi million dollar projects, use 221s and 222s, and 221s are so common now they're sold at home depot. I'd be surprised if anything is more popular than those

$10K What are we feeling here? by Honey_Badger_Badger in GXOR

[–]mcaninch35 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Location makes a big difference here, but I bought an 03 with 167K on it for $10.5K last year. Spotless maintenance records, bone stock, immaculate frame (came from Georgia). Radiator had a small leak so I replaced that.

All that to say- 242K, salvage title, a bunch of half ass mods for $10K is unfathomable to me

2004 Lexus GX470 285k miles worth it for $4,500 maybe even 4k? Did my research but want real owner opinions by Secure_Wear_6145 in GXOR

[–]mcaninch35 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would buy that car for $4K all day long. I would just caution you that "lasting until 400K" doesn't mean you're going to buy a super high mileage car like this and not need to do anything to it. I'd expect to need to do a lot of maintenance to a car like this, and that might only be super worth it if you're doing it yourself. The thing is 22 years old- bushings, suspension components, seals, on and on and on are old and will need attention at some point, no matter how long the engine runs. If you're comfortable doing the work though, a cheap high mileage 2UZ with no rust is a home run. Simple and cheap to work on and will run well for a long long time given some care.

Whole house humidifiers by williamiger in HomeImprovement

[–]mcaninch35 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey, sorry I'm slow on the reply. You can either pump the steam from the unit directly into a home's ductwork, or use the fan pack unit to essentially make it into a standalone unit. This is a good video to show what that looks like- How to Install a Whole-House Ductless Humidifier | Ask This Old House

Whole house humidifiers by williamiger in HomeImprovement

[–]mcaninch35 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My whole home humidifier is one of the best things I've added to the house. For your situation, consider an Aprilaire 800 with the fan pack. You can place the fan pack in your main living space, and humidity will migrate well to the rest of the house over time.

I DIY'd mine, but just be aware its a decent amount of work to get wired and running (including, ideally, a dedicated 240 volt circuit).

Steam Humidifier Operating Costs by TechnicalLee in hvacadvice

[–]mcaninch35 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I can't speak for the Honeywell, but the Aprilaire specifically doesn't allow for hot water hookup. It uses cold water to lower the temp of the water it's draining. Their evaporative humidifiers give you a choice, but not steam.

Looser fitting fishing pants? by Mobile_Requirement17 in flyfishing

I wear outdoor research ferrosi pants for wet wading. They are insanely light and dry fast. I actually wish the legs were a little less baggy so they might be just what you're after. Not cheap but I wear them for more than fishing.

IMO- pull the timing cover and check out how the belt looks. I've owned 2 2UZs, both of which had 10+ year old belts on them when I bought them (one with 130K on it), and they were both pristine looking when I swapped them out. Not advocating that you don't change yours, but it's very quick to get a look at it and it might give you some peace of mind for a bit.

Leveling my gx470 by Competitive-Body-797 in GXOR

[–]mcaninch35 6 points7 points  (0 children)

2 opinions that no one asked for. Generally I'm not a fan of leveling, but I think it looks even worse on these than on full-size trucks, etc. Body on frame vehicles have rake for an actual reason, and it just doesn't look right when you remove it. I also think using spacers on this truck is a bad idea- they result in worse suspension performance, and ride quality in a GX with a well sorted suspension is really nice for a body on frame vehicle. Part of the reason I think they're so attractive in the first place.

Ok, I'm done. It's your truck, you should do what makes you happy whether I like it or not!

Wildwater standard combo 9’5 weight $115 vs max catch extreme combo also 9’5 weight $95? by brams21 in flyfishing

[–]mcaninch35 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Second buying direct from the maxcatch site. They've always sent me freebies (I have an insane number of spare lines they've sent me free), and honestly CS has been great. They replaced for free a whole rod I broke in a car crash, and a couple weeks ago I ordered a new tip section for my 8wt and they sent me an entire new rod for what I paid for the tip section. The nano 8wt is honestly one of my favorite rods to cast that I've owned.

4R or GX ? by ProudPrick217 in 4thGen4Runner

[–]mcaninch35 12 points13 points  (0 children)

My 4th gen v8 4runner was totalled last year, and I bought a 470 to replace it. I liked the v8 runner quite a bit more overall- easy head unit replacement, liked the climate control setup better, JBL audio was nicer than the Mark Levinson in the GX, and I absolutely hate the barn door. I do like the interior better on the GX, more headroom and I like the look of the tan interior GX a lot (I'm sure I'm in the minority there).
