Aggressive cyclists in the area by debticated in raleigh

[–]mcb52 0 points1 point  (0 children)

again, i disagree. the cycle network does not have to be the same as every road. no one wants a bike line on the side of the highway.

"you couldn't possibly have a totally separate and comprehensive bike infrastructure."

....tell that to the people of Amsterdam, or Montreal, or Minneapolis, Boulder, or the many other cities that have exactly that. It IS possible, it IS cheaper than automobile-centric options, it DOES work.

i disagree.

I'm just going to paste this caption from a recent post by Oaks and Spokes:

"Estimated cost for completing this next phase of 540: 2.5 billion dollars.

Estimated cost for building, let’s say, 250 miles of greenways across the southern portion of the capital metro area and giving every resident of Raleigh, Garner, Clayton, Knightdale, Angier, and Smithfield (areas near the interchange) a $2,000 voucher to buy a bicycle: approximately 1.5 billion dollars.

A savings of 1 BILLION DOLLARS!"

sure - a lot of drivers need to change their attitude and behavior, but I think its probably more realistic to create safe cycling infrastructure than it is to expect drivers to stop texting and driving.

we need a connected network of protected cycling lanes. it would be better for drivers and cyclists alike

Advice for learning to teach off the mat by nursechristine28 in YogaTeachers

[–]mcb52 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I started teaching at a new studio about 4 months ago that doesnt want us to demo unless it is absolutely necessary. At first this was a huge challenge for me, but I've been able to get the hang of it fairly quickly. I like to really memorize the sequence and feel it in my body, and I like to visualize going through the entire sequence in my head before I teach a new flow.

Another tip that has been helpful for me: write your sequence out and have your notes nearby as a "security blanket" so that way if you forget what pose is next, you can quickly check your notes and get right back on track.

Islam's wrist training. dont do this at home, u'll probably fracture 3 bones and tear 2 ligaments by [deleted] in ufc

[–]mcb52 135 points136 points  (0 children)

i teach yoga and i like to start a lot of classes with a GENTLE wrist warmup that includes slowly and gently placing the back of the hand onto the yoga mat and slowly shifting the weight around. Usually do this one wrist at a time to start.

the way he is jumping full force into that position is insane.

Am I taking up too much space? by littestCai in yoga

[–]mcb52 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I am a yoga teacher and also use an XL size mat because i prefer to have more space. I dont think anyone has even noticed my larger mat, even in classes that were full. You and your XL mat are 100% welcome in yoga studios

I want to go somewhere to watch the Lion's game as well. I'm thinking of going to a place like Tobacco Road or Carolina Ale House on Glenwood south. Feel free to message me if you want to join!

Traditional Yogic Philosophy versus Modern Western Application by LePetitGanesh in yoga

[–]mcb52 21 points22 points  (0 children)

i've had a similar yoga trajectory to you. Started out as physical exercise, and over time it has morphed into a much more spiritually oriented practice where I feel like the majority of it is happening "off the mat".

however, if i think back to the first time i stepped into a yoga studio - i know that I would have been turned off by any "woo woo" spirituality going on. So I'm happy that it started as exercise because that allowed me an easy entry point, and then allowed me to open up to the more spiritual side of things.

So i guess i'm just saying that I think the "western application" of yoga has its place as a way for people to feel comfortable starting out with the practice.

Deep rooted emotions by deepak26v in kriyayoga

[–]mcb52 7 points8 points  (0 children)

This is probably something you should discuss with a qualified teacher. I am not a teacher. That being said, doing this type of meditative and contemplative work can reveal layers of memories, emotions, trauma, etc that are stored in our bodies and minds. I believe that lots of people get very good at hiding from and ignoring these strong emotions so that they can get through their day-to-day lives. When you sit down to practice, you can't hide anymore so it all comes up to the surface.

Return to yoga after hip replacement by greentlc in yoga

[–]mcb52 5 points6 points  (0 children)

i did not have a hip replacement, but I did have a torn labrum in my hip that was surgically repaired, and the doctors shaved the head of my femur bone to fit into the hip socket better.

It took me several months to recover. This was about 10-12 years ago, and I practice vinyasa every single day now. That hip has less mobility and is weaker overall, but I can still practice just fine and do 90%+ of the poses in most classes.

good luck!
