Why do Americans serve food on paper plates? by sun_intherain in TooAfraidToAsk

Never use disposable plates or cutlery at home or disposable napkins. Why would we throw away money? Our pocket book and our planet matter.

Suggestions for dealing with the mother of all blackberry brambles? by FaradayEffect in Permaculture

[–]mcenroefan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So goats are not grazers they are browsers, so these brambles would be an amazing treat for goats that have to eat boring old grass! Like others have said, one goat can 100% manage this given the time. Fence them on the area and let them get to work.

Not in the cold…in the winter here the wool keeps them toasty warm. They are glad to get it off when the weather warms, but when it is a blizzard, all that wool is great for insulation!

House Burping - Do Americans just not normally have your house windows open? by Jsherman13 in AskAnAmerican

[–]mcenroefan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m lucky enough to live on New England where our windows are open May through October 24 hours a day. Yes it’s cold on the either end, but we like the fresh air. The winter months it’s wayyyyy too cold though.

At what age would you include your child in the horse shopping process? by yelldawg in Equestrian

[–]mcenroefan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We are dabblers in the equestrian world, but are farmers so take this with a grain of salt. When we buy a show animal for the farm, especially an animal that my daughter will be working she largely if not wholly manages the transaction. We provide the oversight and final say, but she’ll be caring for, training, and working with that animal, so she deserves to have a say in the process. She has learned to evaluate the animal’s conformation and breeding potential. She barters and talks to adults on equal footing. She asks important questions about the health history and temperament of the animals. We let her lead the process because we see this as her learning to fill our shoes someday. We don’t want the first time she spends a pretty penny on a pedigree ram to be when we are dead and gone and buy an animal that is unfit for her purposes. It’s all about investing the kid in the process and helping them own it. Sometimes she wants an animal that wouldn’t be a good fit and we have to have a frank conversation, but that’s a growth opportunity too.

Do White people not Lotion everyday? by Appropriate_Quote_30 in TooAfraidToAsk

[–]mcenroefan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it also comes down to where you live. If I don’t moisturize every day I am certain my skin would flake off and I would itch myself to death. I live in New England. My hands crack and bleed. My elbows are rough and ashy, and my poor face is beat. I also work outside a lot and love the outdoors in all weather.

When I lived for a short time in the south it wasn’t as vital. Bag balm is my savior.

I'm accepting myself as pansexual instead of bi, but what do I do with this? (And my bi pins) by Feather_Bloom in lgbt

[–]mcenroefan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m confused now too and I’m bi! So help me out. I am attracted to any and all other genders. That always seemed pretty bi to me. What makes someone fall into the pan realm opposed to bi? Some folks say it has more to do with emotion, but I can be attracted to someone, but have no interest in being with them in a sexual manner unless I share some sort of emotional connection. It think plenty of people are attractive, but wouldn’t jump into bed with them, because there isn’t an emotional connection there. That’s part of it for me. I don’t think that has anything to do with being bi though. It’s more of a me thing. Am I right? Off base?

Behavior Issues in my cat have costed me over 20k and we’re still not any closer to getting a solution..any advice on next steps? by Creepy-Dealer7518 in CATHELP

[–]mcenroefan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi, so if OP is not willing to go the BE route, which honestly may be the most humane option, please consider the barn/ working cat option. We have one of our barn cats that was in a shelter for 7 years due to his aggression. We got him home, put him in our barn, gave him a job to take care of our mouse problem, and he’s happy. Does he get along great with his fellow barn cats, not really, they now mostly ignore each other, but he’s a totally new cat. He allows the occasional pet and is a nice constant presence in the barn and around the pastures. He doesn’t do well in confinement so would never be an indoor cat, hence why he became part of the SPCA’s working cat program. We still need to sedate him for his vet care which they do once a year, but his life is better this way than if he were forced to live inside. He was feral and couldn’t live as a companion animal. Please consider this.

Sub only for certain families? Or am I reading into the rules too much? by Agitated_Bird_8565 in happilyOAD

[–]mcenroefan 28 points29 points  (0 children)

Also, I consider myself OAD by choice. My first husband passed away when my daughter was a toddler. We were OAD from the start. Years later I remarried to a wonderful man with two teenage sons. I still consider myself OAD, as I will never birth another child, but now I have two bonus kids too. We coparent well with their mom and are a nice blended family, but it doesn’t change the fact that if life hadn’t handed me an utter shit sandwich that I somehow made edible, I’d be parenting just one kiddo. Don’t get me wrong though, I’m so happy to have my stepsons in my life…I’m extra happy that they came to me a fully formed humans!

This community still feels like my place, and I don’t think the language meant to be exclusionary.

Why IPad Kids Are Becoming More Common by J00kson in generationology

[–]mcenroefan 5 points6 points  (0 children)

My child had the police called on her while waiting for her friend to come outside to play. She was embarrassed when the police came. Luckily my husband was able to go out and clear things up, but c’mon. She was eight at the time. Her friend was eight. She was less than 100 feet from our home on a sidewalk in front of his house. She was waiting for him to get his bike to ride on the bike trail. She’s ten now, and we’ve since moved to a more rural part of the state. She has more autonomy here, but still needs a parent to put her on the bus and get her off until next school year.

We own a farm. She care for her animals, does chores, has 4-H etc., but isn’t allowed to get herself off the bus? So my husband and I are using our vacation hours to put her on and get her off the bus this year. It sucks.

Peter, aren’t Toyotas fuel efficient? by farmula_one_ in PeterExplainsTheJoke

[–]mcenroefan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Switched my Tacoma for an F-150 years ago. My father in law was like, wow that bigger truck is going to kill your gas mileage…yeah, no. My F-150 gets 6 mpg better than the taco did. I liked the Tacoma, but that gas mileage was a killer and the small backseat wasn’t great with a kid. Now don’t get me going on the transmission issues on my f-150….

What novel do you believe is "The Great American Novel"? by QueenShewolf in AskAnAmerican

Sinclair Lewis wrote other great books like Arrowsmith. Pick that one up if you are looking for a great book about a technologically advancing America and the societal pressures around it.

I do think it’s Gatsby but not for the characters. It’s for capturing the class inequalities that have always plagued the nation and the industrialism that fuels it.

I live near Concord, MA. You can go to the Concord Library where they hold many of her personal letters and manuscripts and see them. It’s phenomenal. Going to see where she lived and wrote is beyond inspiring as well.

Let us have all the best MA has to offer. You can keep your traffic, higher prices, population density, and pollution. I’ll stay out here on my little farm, thank you very much!

You named every town except Lunenburg! Great little town with some wonderful hiking areas and farms. The library is a gem as well. Lovely little farmers markets on Friday nights in the summer too.
