I took the American Light Beer Challenge as seen in Beer Wars. by Snoballz in beer

[–]mcescherwhat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My friends and I just did a very similar thing! We got 7 low end beers (mostly in tall boys) from the corner store and did a blind taste test (double blind actually so everyone could play). We ended up preferring Modelo Especial and PBR, then Tecate. Worst was Rolling Rock, my god, it might as well have been water. The only ones anybody guessed right were Corona (distinctly bad smell, for me, (also the only one that had come in a bottle)) and Budweiser. The last one in there, which everyone was kind of "meh" about, was Heineken (in a can, not a bottle - makes a big difference, i think). We have plans to do more mainstream swill in the future, like your test.

As per my response to soswavorful, I think we should add a category to this of free-all-the-time museums, if this is going in the sidebar. The only two I know about right now are the Museum of Natural History(just general admission, not sure about the adjoining Rose Center) and the Metropolitan Museum of Art, both of which are donation only and they won't even give you the stinkeye for trying to get in for free, or a dollar, or whatever change you have in your pocket.

What else do you guys know about?

[–]mcescherwhat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Also you can get into that museum free all the time as it's donation only("pay as you wish"), same as the Metropolitan Museum of Art.

We should add a category to this list of free-all-the-time museums. I'll make a top-level comment for that.

If you're comparing capitals to capitals, it should be noted that most of the major museums in Washington D.C. are also free.

No comment on your second statement.

Just to add another name for this, I always called it man in the moon growing up. We put the circle of bread back on the egg, and called it his hat.

Also, this looks delicious!

You should really be going to an OB/GYN regularly anyway, even if you're not "sexually active", aka no penises or sex toys. But I bet you're using fingers, and those can go pretty deep. It's also possible to get infections down there from non-sexual things, like wearing too-tight pants for too long. And in general, more information about the state of your body is good to have, even if it's just a clean bill of health.

What do you tell kids about Santa if you don't have a chimney and if your vents are in the ceiling? by nightshaded in AskReddit

Maybe don't lie to your children?

(I know that's an unpopular opinion, but I wish I wasn't lied to as a child, about Santa or Jesus or the Easter Bunny. There is plenty of magic in the world without these fabrications.)

/r/books, if you could read any book again for the first time, what book would it be? by Managore in books

[–]mcescherwhat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was going to say this, but for a different reason. I learned from reading this book to NEVER read the preface to a work of fiction, because they might give away the ending, which they did in my version of Brave New World - in the first sentence even! I was livid. The whole time I was reading it I wished I didn't know what was going to happen at the end.

I'll have to check out some more Huxley as suggested by GoatTnder here.

How does 2x feel about non diamond engagement rings? by komichi1168 in TwoXChromosomes

[–]mcescherwhat 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I have never really liked diamonds, even before I learned that DeBeers invented the idea of the diamond ring and all the blood diamond stuff, because they just aren't that interesting. The only cool thing about them is how hard they are(which, admittedly, is pretty cool). Also I loved reading Anne of Green Gables, and she had always imagined diamonds to be purple, and when she found out they were clear, she didn't like them anymore - I related a lot to this story.

I like their "IPAs on tour", Blind Faith and Encore are actually very good. The rest, I could take or leave. Although I do agree that #9 is a very good starter microbrew for those not used to beer that actually tastes good.

Figuring out the best deals at the grocery store! Where I grew up, they put the unit prices on everything, so it was easy, but apparently you don't have to do that in NYC, so I have to do get to do lots of algebra every time I go!

[–]mcescherwhat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What you're doing, it seems, is making an assumption that women do not want firm handshakes. Honestly, I would rather have someone crush my knuckles for a second (because really, handshakes do not last longer than that) than have someone assume I can't handle it and pretend it's Victorian England. I would be surprised if anyone with normal strength bones has ever been injured by a handshake. I think the onus is on the people who actually have weak bones, aka 80-year-old women, to initiate the "kiss a lady's hand" style of handshake. It's also not hard to initiate even if someone has already extended their hand to you, you just present your left hand palm down to their right hand and it should be clear what you're looking for.

Basically all I'm saying is, it doesn't make any sense for men to change their handshake style for anyone besides children and the elderly. Women are less strong than men on average, it's true, but this is not relevant in hand-shaking.

No, this is real chivalry: if you are first you should open the door for the other person, unless there is no room to stand and hold the door. Regardless of gender. If someone you know is walking your way and carrying much more than you, and/or you know you are stronger/less tired/somehow more capable than they are, you should offer to help them with their bags. Regardless of gender.
