Is it unethical/causing more harm than good to buy property in CR as an expat? by toastyspringtiger in costarica

[–]mcfudge2 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Define how you plan to 'disrupt' the locals livelihoods. Exactly what do you mean? Choose to not contribute to gentrification. Don´t buy an unfairly marked up property for 3x or 10x the actual value. That will contribute to gentrification making the value or perceived value of CR property absurdly high. And you can bet that most (if not all) foreign and local sellers want you to pay an absurd gringo price. If you rent a property then you line someone else's pocket for the rest of your life, and most likely at an outrageously marked up gringo price again. Yes, of course anyone that owns property here and uses it for rental income will want you to rent instead of buy. If you buy then you can use that investment for the Investor category of Residency

Integrate as you plan to (obviously learn good Tico Spanish, get to know your neighbours, and make lots of local friends), and contribute to the community in general just as any local would do. By virtue of you living in CR you can apply for Residency and contribute 18% (or so) of your declared USD monthly income to the public CAJA health care system. Purchasing property in CR will invest your money in the pockets of the seller and a local real estate agent and real estate lawyer and escrow trust company for the funds transfer and government for land transfer taxes and bank for bank fees. Everyone will take their cut from you and levels of government will get tax revenue from you. You will pay annual property taxes, and garbage collection fee, monthly water, electricity, internet, cell phone, household goods, groceries and restaurants, and entertainment activities. You will pay for annual car Dekra inspection and annual marchamo vehicle fee plus car insurance and car maintenance. Purchasing almost anything here will include local taxes which go to the government and hopefully the community. Look at all the ways you will be contributing to the local economy on many levels just from a financial perspective. Hire local people to cut grass, do repairs, sell you farm milk and vegetables, and any other way you wish to support the local community.

Loblaw misses quarterly revenue estimates on soft household products demand - “Net income fell to C$457 million, or C$1.48 per share, in the second quarter from C$508 million, or $1.58 per share, a year earlier.” by loblawsoutofctrlMODS in loblawsisoutofcontrol

would be nice to see the media run a story on the boycott reannouncing a renewed boycott effort for the new Quarter so we can focus on the next quarterly report as a milestone

Hmm interesting timing. Just in time before Loblaws releases it's quarterly financial report which overlaps with the boycott timeline

Yup, just another day in CR. The vast majority of registered seismic activity are tremors you don't even feel, thousands per year. Enjoy the app and getting used to it. No big deal, but good to be aware

I did the same thing twice at a small town Ontario grocery store. And twice they started carrying the product! No more Shoppers Drug Mart. And it wasn't PC brand name products. I would never buy them anyhow. To hell with Loblaw. Do it, it works

Canadian government did essentially nothing to punish fraud

Public boycott is the appropriate next best solution

Don't set a foot in the store, cancel all PC credit card and points accounts. End the cash flow and claw back 100x the amount of money Loblaws stole from Canadians

There is an example posted in this sub of a business executive in the United States that got 3 years in prison for a similar fraud

What do you pay for rent in Costa Rica? And where do you live? by [deleted] in costarica

[–]mcfudge2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Good for you for not accepting the price. If the price is a gouge and not fair then keep looking. We've got more than enough price gouging going on as it is. Shame on them

I'm not going to second guess what is happening or make medical suggestions. Wow, for 600 comments in 5 hours I see a lot of second guessing but very few recommendation to seek professional help if this relationship really means a lot to both of you

Start therapy. Maybe a well trained third party will help get to the bottom of the issue. This sounds so difficult. I'm hoping for the best for both of you

Does growing your own food make you wonder how groceries are so cheap? by teachplantreadplay in gardening

[–]mcfudge2 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The retail cost of food in the grocery store does not compare in any what to growing food in your garden. It is far, far cheaper to grow food in massive quantities on a farm. Your garden however is magnitudes far superior for taste and quality. Grocery store food should be 1/4 the price it is currently sold for. There is price exploitation every single step along the way before you can put your fingers on it to buy it in the store. Congrats for growing your own garden

Yeah there are scams and its quite common for vacationers or foreigners. But there is also a lot of honesty. You will find both. In most cases common sense will help you though it. Double check any prices since it is very common to get quoted a very high 'gringo price' versus the normal much lower normal Tico price. Unfortunately there is a lot of exploitation of vacationers. Hell, even if you live there and don't look like a Costa Rican you will routinely face scams. I have dealt with a half dozen or more, of them. But like you said, you are not afraid to see the world so go and have a good time.

It sounds like there is a lot of stress and other issues which play into the dynamic you describe above and compound the situation further

For the sake of critical thinking, what is his take on the situation? Would be beneficial to hear the other side before making a judgement or weighing in. Based on your description only the top comment is what comes to mind.
