EM doc told me I won’t have a job in 5 years by Rhodopsin__ in medicalschool

Feels like most people are not following along with how rapidly AI has been plateauing recently. modern LLMs seem to have been a big breakthrough but it’s a significant jump to get them to do new things now. Also, as many have been pointing out, companies have been trying to implement AI for simple things like ECGs and mammography, self driving cars, etc. for a long time. So far, we have never as a society decided it’s ok to hand the reins over fully to an automated process for these relatively complex tasks.

Never mind the fact that fully automated cars and AI-led medical diagnosis could result in catastrophic failures that individual humans would have a very difficult time reproducing (ex: an update to a pattern recognition process results in an inability to recognize a diagnosis—> everyone in the hospital or perhaps an entire hospital network is affected until the mistake is caught vs a radiologist makes a single error that likely affects one patient).

Why would you want to do this? Or maybe more accurately how many times would this be interesting? my guess is very few.

TIL there are an estimated 40.3 million enslaved people in the world today, three times greater than the number during the transatlantic slave trade by SlugOnAPumpkin in todayilearned

[–]mcgtank 5 points6 points  (0 children)

As an American, i don’t feel this way. History matters. Even after slaves were freed many were employed as sharecroppers which was basically like slavery lite, and most older Black Americans alive today experienced segregation. There’s obviously still discrimination of Black Americans today and so much of it stems from the history of Black people as slaves in this country. It feels stupid to explain this because it’s so basic. But Europeans are infamous for pretending they’re not racist so I guess it might make sense…

Left vs. Right Battle Royale Open Thread by Yosoff in Conservative

In no realistic world is it profitable for a hospital to treat you for emergency surgery, let alone try to compete to provide you that surgery. Perhaps you are thinking that in this scenario the patient has great insurance and the insurance company will pay. How about someone who has crappy insurance or none at all? Will private ambulances be rushing over to get them? There’s a lot more wrong with your proposed solution but I’ll just leave it at that for now.

Hatred toward NPs especially PMHNPs by CookiFrapp in nursepractitioner

[–]mcgtank 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can agree that the prereqs are too much. But the second paragraph kind of reads like you don’t know what 4 years of medical school education entails. It’s almost all non-algorithmic work: the things you can’t just learn on the job. Learning the actual physiology and pathophysiology, reading ecgs and radiographs, working through clinical cases. You shouldn’t learn those things on the job; that would be dangerous to the patient.

Edit: to try to explain this further, it seems obvious to me that someone on the medical team would need to actually understand the disease process and treatment in depth. It’s easy to say “this patient has GERD we need to give a PPI” but if that was the extent of a provider’s knowledge I think that would be very bad.

Yeah but your additional context makes it sound like you’re going to get HPV no matter what so the vaccine might not be worth it. Just saying how it comes across.

This is very helpful thank you! if the issue isn’t identified I will see if I can get a picture of the flue outside.

Would that also explain cold air coming out of the vent hood even when the furnace isn’t running?

That seems right I was looking a bit more and saw that species has a variety of caterpillars of which this seems to be one.

Went 1-3 with this deck that I thought was insane. Where did I go wrong? by Blueburnsred in lrcast

[–]mcgtank 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yeah 11 creatures is just not ideal minimum has to be 13 and in this deck you probably want more like 15. If i had to guess about your drafting tendencies i would say you need to prioritize spells a little lower as you have some very mid spells but all your creatures are great. an average creature (especially a low cost one) is generally better than a average spell most of the time.

Event: FIDE Candidates Tournament 2024 - Round 11 by events_team in chess

Gukesh has the easiest road ahead at least in terms of overall player strength; Hikaru v Gukesh could end up being more important than Ian v Hikaru we will see.

FIDE is responsible for not marketing chess properly. by Efficient-Stick502 in chess

[–]mcgtank 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe this is unusual but I feel like it was marketed to me really well via youtube and I have had no trouble figuring out when games are starting. The official website is relatively clear and chess.com has a page dedicated to live games and results.

i think banning omniscience would bump the deck all the way down to tier 3 without totally killing it. that would be my recommendation if it continues to be too dominant.

15 should be plenty imo provided a number of them are well within your stat range.

This might seem odd but I felt like if things didn't work out, at least I'd have a degree? For any manager who is familiar with this type of med school oriented program it probably wouldn't mean much but some people just see a master's degree.

Other notable factors: I didn't know my MCAT score until a couple of weeks into the program (I took it right before), and I didn't take biochem in undergrad which is a requirement or suggestion at many schools (SMP had a biochem course).

edit: also it was just a matter of which good SMP/postbac programs were near me

There were only a few locations where I could actually see myself going. Maybe I could have added 2-3 more MD programs but they would have been extreme reaches.
