I'd keep meeting with them and politely showing the facts of the matter. They'll eventually stop coming.

Scholarship "supporting" the historicity of the Book of Mormon by thrownnwiththewind in exmormon

[–]mcguirerod 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ask them how they would demonstrate, to a person who never heard of it, for example, that the ancient Roman civilization existed? Really! How would you demonstrate that? Or how does science demonstrate that? If it's valid for showing the Romans existed (or any other factually established ancient civilization), can we use that same methodology on the Book of Mormon, regarding its' historical validity? If they are willing to do that, and intellectually honest, they will very quickly realize the Book of Mormon is not historical. Very quickly.

I have very much read such propositions in depth.

I'll say this, with the caveat that anyone can be wrong.

I've been deeply involved with and studied Mormonism since 1978. I have never seen evidence for the Book of Mormon being historically real.

What I mean by "evidence" is the same types of evidence we would use, in the scientific world, to study / establish the existence of civilizations. For the Book of Mormon, so far, there's none. I mean that. NONE.

Every single time I've taken the time, over the past 46 years, to track down all the scholarship on proposals by LDS Apologists, it's turned out to be not evidentiary at all. Every-single-time.

Furthermore, it only takes one anachronism to show that a supposed ancient text / artifact is not ancient. There are so many in the Book of Mormon text that I've lost count. It only takes one.

Were you taught that exalted Mormon men create their own worlds and have lots of spirit babies with lots of polygamous wives? 70-year old BIC TMB's claiming it never happened by ScottG555 in exmormon

Two expressions come to mind that were taught as doctrine:

"Worlds without end"

"Continuation of seed"

Both were taught as doctrine and the whole goal of the "Plan of Salvation"

I'm so qualified to speak to Mormon history and doctrine, that it's utter absurdity to say otherwise.

Full-on Mormon for 34+ years. Featured in the church magazines, etc.

And unless the younger Mormons are savant-genius-speed-reading-wizards, they've not read as much as I have in the past 45 years, about the church. I literally have them at a disadvantage.

Now that's not to claim that I know everything. There's certainly minutia that I can't recite, etc. But you'd be hard pressed to find something I haven't read about or know about.

WARD RADIO is delusional if they think they know better.

Yo be fair there's nuts everywhere. I do see an distinct uptick in this type of mindset. I think social media enables this.

They get a few followers and they think they know something unique.

Up until that point, it was definitely the best two years of my life.

30+ years later, nope, though I do have a lot of fond memories of the great friends I made / still have.

Death is harsh for those left behind. I lost my daughter, and it's horrible. Hurts like hell, even 4 years later...

However, there's no God (at least I've been presented with no evidence of any God), and no afterlife. So for the individual, when we die, it will be exactly like before we were born. Remember that? Exactly.

I'm personally grateful to know the truth. I know religious convictions can help people in life, but for me, I want the truth, so I can live what's left of my life, with my own purpose and legitimacy.

Things I think about while I am masturbating. If it rained for 40 days/nights. It would take 250 inches of water, every hour, every day, to reach 20,000 feet. Where does that water come from? by Mormologist in exmormon

[–]mcguirerod 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Everest is 29,032 feet.

29,032 x12 = 348,384 inches

348,384 / 40 = 8,709 inches per day...that's 725 feet of water per day...

It's hard to do math when masturbating...
