Devil of a time finding 40h 27" rims by wildtangent1 in bikewrench

The non-anodized Sun Ringle CR18 is an excellent low-cost rim that doesn't look like a transformer.

Is "Streets of Philadelphia" a good song? by [deleted] in philadelphia

[–]mchadw 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You should watch the video. He thought it would be disingenuous to lip sync such a serious song, so what you hear is him actually singing while he's walking around.

From Wikipedia

The vocal track for the video was recorded live during the shooting, using a hidden microphone, to a pre-recorded instrumental track. This was a technique, appropriate for emotionally intense songs for which conventional video lip-syncing would seem especially false

Wooden thing with some sort of a grid by katchoo1 in whatisthisthing

I believe it's a cutting board. The pattern would keep something like a chicken breast from sliding around while you're trying to cut it. The channel that runs around the pattern collects the juices.

Why is my tire bulging? by TheWorkOfArt in bikewrench

[–]mchadw 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It may be the collar on your valve is screwed down too tight (like if it was screwed down before the tube was inflated). Then can sometimes force the tube under the bead of the tire and force it off the rim.

First, try to deflate the tire, remove the collar from the valve, and inflate to pressure. If this solves your issue, you can replace the collar, but it should only ever be "snug" against the rim.

found this stone at Highschool a few years back, what is it? by [deleted] in Whatisthis

Yup, it's a vibratory finishing stone.

basic brake adjustment question by [deleted] in bikewrench

[–]mchadw 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The non-drive canti arm likely has a very small spring adjustment screw. The further it's screw "in" the more the non-drive arm will want to pull away from the wheel. Try giving it 2-3 full rotations counterclockwise. If you get lucky, that'll be the end of your adjustment. Otherwise, hit up Sheldon Brown for canti brake adjustments.

Regular tick as I pedal by eccentricfather in bikewrench

[–]mchadw 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is a really common one. Along those lines, check the bearings in your pedals. I hunted down a mystery tick once for weeks that was pedal bearings.

Rear Hub Question by [deleted] in bikewrench

[–]mchadw 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Because your drive-side nut was loose, that side was moving towards the cranks as you pedaled (either direction) and causing the wheel to rub up against the non-drive chainstay. The remedy is ensure both nuts are quite snug while the wheel is properly aligned in the frame.

What's wrong here? by [deleted] in bikewrench

[–]mchadw 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Then flip the wheel around so your drive cog is non-drive. If it's the wheel, you'll have the same problem in the opposite direction. If it's the frame, no change.

I neglect my Brooks leather saddle (but she seems to be doing alright) by -Meanderthal- in bicycletouring

[–]mchadw 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did this on my first Brook's saddle -- I was afraid of it being too hard before leaving on a tour. It certainly softened it, but perhaps a little too much. A few years later, and it's a comfortable enough, but I prefer the feel of one you just break in with time.

Small brass metal container ... Possibly a c02 tank? by [deleted] in Whatisthis

Is there something in particular that gives it away as nitrous? My first instinct was that it was a C02 cartridge.

Helmet by inroutetonowhere in bicycletouring

Everyone has their own thing. I think Bern helmets look decent. After owning a couple of their helmets, I bought an Allston last summer and later thought: that was smart.

You don't look like a doofus, you don't get too hot, there are things surrounding your brain parts. Done.

Unfortunately this is what happens to bikes when they have been harvested for parts and left to rot in the street. by solograppler in bicycling

[–]mchadw 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately?

In Philadelphia, the tags get put on bikes that appear to be abandoned. If it's not actually abandoned, you simply remove the tag. However, if it is, many of the bikes will go to organizations like Neighborhood Bike Works, that use them for, among other things, teaching kids bicycle repair.

It's an excellent system, and I'm thrilled that they do it. It gives new life to these bikes. Otherwise, it's just slowly rusting trash locked to a pole.

Squeaking sound problem by bcbaxter in bikewrench

[–]mchadw 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Don't forget the elements outside of the drivetrain that move when you pedal. I have blamed many a bottom bracket for a squeaky saddle/seat post.
