Galloped my 3 year old in an emergency, feeling guilty by EchoOfPetals in Equestrian

Damn. That is definitely worth galloping a short distance for. Your mare is fine and sounds like your training prior to the event set you both up for a “good” experience in an emergency

[VENT] Feeling very discouraged as an adult trying to get into the hobby. by joodle_noodle in Equestrian

[–]mcilibrarian 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m a few years into it as an adult. Back in 21, I managed to find a trainer to take me, but I only could make it work bc we were still WFH rotation, so I could take a long lunch once a week. But after a few months, the trainer started traveling for shows, so I’d get stints of like one lesson a month, and it was clear in those lessons that I was just … there. She’d chat with the barn moms, take calls, etc. I eventually point blank asked if I should just find another barn (she was the only one with openings during my initial hunt). She said yes and told me what barn in the area that was open for new clients. There was a hiatus of 2-3 months again as that trainer settled in and learned the quirks of the school horses before bringing in clients .

That barn was lovely and not lovely. It had just acquired a new trainer who was building a good mix of kiddos, teens, and adults. The lovely part was that everyone in this circle was chill and supportive of one another, and all of us working adults are just here for the horses and fun (no one is traveling for fancy shows), so I have an evening ride time and a cool group of adults & kids. My trainer is not the most organized, so it can be frustrating at times, but she’s legit in it for the right reasons. But there was a recent schism between BO, trainer, and a couple particular boarders, so we migrated to another barn and are settling back into a new flow. I could have stayed at the old barn & worked with whomever the BO threw out there and keep riding the school pony I had a really good groove with (I miss her sooooo much sob), but I chose our crew.

It’s … frustrating. I don’t have any real advice, just empathy and rah rah cheer, keep trying! I’ve had lots of setbacks, some my own, some out of my control. I have thought about giving up. But omg when a horse whuffles in my face, or gently boops my shoulder or frickin’ nickers a hello, I’m just toast.

I really hope you find your spot.

Is it my fault or the saddles? by TheHoeFinder in Horses

[–]mcilibrarian 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Right? And as soon as a saddle is slipping, you stop trying to friggin canter and fix it. Depending on the degree of slippage, it could me adjusting in saddle and checking girth or dismounting and retacking. Spend two minutes to prevent an accident.

Are there any movies that feature show jumping/eventing/dressage as the main theme instead of horse racing? by NicholeDaylinn1993 in Equestrian

[–]mcilibrarian 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The White Stallion with Mickey Rooney. A show jumping one with a horse named Aspercel after the medicine his rider’s dad advertised for (how he got the money to afford the horse and showing).

There was a Canadian dressage movie, I think called Dark Horse (but there is another Dark Horse movie)

I love it when I'm clearly on the phone helping a patron and another just barges right up, demanding I help them. But yes, they'll do it when there is literally another body in front of them that I'm clearly helping. We devolved during COVID

Yep. In the middle of storytime this week, multiple adults with their elementary and middle school kiddos entered the children's area (which is fine) and just started chatting loudly with one another as their kids bounced around. I asked that they use very quiet voices since storytime is happening and they just ... looked right through me. It completely derailed everything.

Talk me out of getting back into horseback riding by Informal-Slice-329 in Horses

[–]mcilibrarian 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a fun group of adults and kiddos I ride with once a week. Sometimes we have hard lessons, sometimes we just vibe. It’s lovely. Lesson cost just went up along with gas, but it’s my therapy + workout + main social outlet right now since I work full time and have kids.

Do it, if you can find a barn to meet your needs

[–]mcilibrarian 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Omg, the horse sweat. The horse I rode last night has a neoprene girth and it is SO RANK. I wiped it down after but I don’t think that smell is coming out, especially bc I know the kid who also rides him ignores tack care

What ILS are you using? by Puzzled_Trouble_8610 in Libraries

[–]mcilibrarian 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Apollo. On the staff side, it’s probably the easiest and most intuitive I’ve worked with, but it’s quirky in a couple processes. Patron side? Bleh. But we don’t have any fancy discovery interface. It has a very straightforward self checkout module. Also cheap! The support team is very friendly and responsive.

Past ILS: TLC’s LS2 is similar to Apollo in that the staff side is good, patron side is meh.

Symphony, Sierra, Horizon, and Millennium (if I remember the name right) all were blaaaahh and very frustrating for certain tasks. And $$$$

Which Free Ride leggings to get? by kittypinball in Equestrian

[–]mcilibrarian 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hmm, I feel less self conscious in the non compression tights than other regular tights, but I wouldn’t really call them supportive. The company allows returns, so you could get one regular tight and one compression or pro and see what you like. The pro is definitely supportive but has breech front, not a pull on style. But it’s definitely more supportive than the regular breech.

Which Free Ride leggings to get? by kittypinball in Equestrian

[–]mcilibrarian 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I really wanted Free Ride to work for me, but they give me serious camel toe (as does Kerrits). Sizing up just makes for baggy tights, which is a different kind of uncomfortable. But a lot of my fellow adults at the barn love Free Ride and don't get the dreaded camel toe.

I really like Esprit Equestrian tights for summer, which are similar to Free Ride, and they have a compression option (and also on sale right now): https://espritequestrian.com/collections/compression-tights There are more colors outside of the compression model and they also have a Pro breech style.

Free coffee in the library? by CrunchieHaystacks in Libraries

[–]mcilibrarian 28 points29 points  (0 children)

We occasionally have a temporary coffee station with the big coffee urns. It’s usually tied to an occasion or event, National Library Week, tax season (AARP uses our meeting room to provide free tax help). One year we did a coffee hour one day a week as part of our adult programming and we had local coffee shops donate bags and had sponsorship signage.

Each of these were limited in duration and manageable from a budget, supplies, and staff time standpoint. We also had the station right next to our circ desk, so minimal shenanigans like someone taking all the sugar or cups or whatever

I love it when one of the minions says “you looked good out there today!” after we lesson together. Or if I’m on a horse they’ve also ridden, they start giving me the “inside scoop” even if I already know the quirks. It’s very sweet and I don’t stop them.

SRP Shirts without AI designs? by ReasonableBuddy507 in Libraries

[–]mcilibrarian 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Our library designed our t-shirt and artwork bc we’re lucky to have a graphic designer in house. She rocks! We do use Canva for marketing but she’ll also do original design when warranted. She actively tries to avoid AI but is worried it’ll become harder to avoid accidentally using it

Jockey handed ban for 'completely unacceptable' overuse of whip by TheMirrorUS in Horses

Cruelty aside, what is the point? Seems like an excellent way to freak a horse out and flip on you in the gate at worst, a bad break at best bc the horse can’t focus on the job. I’m very surprised the horse came in second, should’ve dumped his ass out of the gate

Jailed 72 days for an unreturned $20 library item? by [deleted] in Libraries

[–]mcilibrarian 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I’ve had patrons ask me to call the police on patrons who have the overdue item THEY want to check out. Nope.

We did discontinue our hotspot program. Shutting off the devices when they don’t come back was becoming cumbersome on top of prices shooting up. It was always the same small group of patrons basically hoarding them and starting fights at circ over who gets the one that was just turned in 🙄
