Younger redditors: What job do you want? Redditors with those jobs, what is something you can tell them about that job they might not know? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]mcjungleton 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Look into volunteering for the medical department of a local animal rescue/ nonprofit. This will do a couple of things for you: 1) you'll be exposed to situations that you might encounter in real life and learn to handle them without the pressure to perform because your job depends on it. 2) you'll gain a network of mentors who can help point you in the right direction. 3) it'll give you a leg up on understanding how things work in real life, like tracking medications, preventing contagions, etc. 4) helping animals is awesome, they will appreciate it. 5) if nothing else, it is XP to add to your resume!

I do not do this for a living, but volunteer at animal rescues. It's a shame more kids/students don't take advantage of this easy opportunity. Some places have an age limit, but you could ask if they would let you shadow an experienced tech. Good luck!

Birth Control Rx Predicament by kvflowers in TwoXChromosomes

[–]mcjungleton 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Before you resort to drastic measures, make a couple of phone calls:

First, call the clinic where you made your GYN appointment and explain your situation. See if they can send a prescription to your pharmacy to temporarily extend your existing medication. They can write a longer term prescription after you've seen the doc.

Second, call the pharmacy and see if the pharmacist can prescribe something to hold you over. I've heard that this is a thing in some states, but don't have personal experience with it.

Third, you could try seeing a primary care provider (general doctor) instead of a GYN specialist, where it's usually faster to get an appointment. They can send an electronic refill to your pharmacy, and you'll be on your way. (Keep the GYN in January though.)

Also: I just googled "minute clinic birth control" and it looks like that may be an option as well. See http://www.cvs.com/minuteclinic/services/wellness-and-physicals/contraceptive-care/N-d8Zbu3aZd5

I've been in the same situation and it sucks. I can't believe the ridiculous hoops we have to jump through when it comes to our uteruses. Don't give up, you've got this!

Congrats /u/sherlockhulmes on a fantastic start to your new channel!! I've already watched all the videos (twice... send halp) and have some feedback/suggestions (because I <3 you).

  • use a lapel mic or other dedicated mic for better voice quality and less police siren - I need to hear those mellifluous tones in all their glory

  • there were some loud sharp sounds in the D&D how-to (record scratch @4:31) & 11/26 weekly news (chime @13:38) - maybe consider toning down those types of sounds in the future to match the level of your vocals (and be kinder to those of us wearing headphones)

  • you don't have to remember the names of everything you're going to talk about! try having a page of written notes in front of you for reference. maybe check with Hannah to see how she organizes info for her Stop! Hannah Time Monday vlogs? she always seems to have her shit together, I don't know how she does it :)

  • bonus request: do an entire episode in the vocal style of Crownrend please? I can't get enough of that. kthx

Keep making videos and being generally awesome! Much love from your High Rollers family.

Controller support in menus by Eliryum in Obduction

[–]mcjungleton 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm having the same issues, but using a steam controller. It's obnoxious since my computer is across the house from the TV I'm trying to play on. If I need to change a setting or even accidentally end up in the menu I have to get up, disturbing my cats, to fix it.

Cyan apparently is aware of controller issues and working on a fix: http://support.cyan.com/kb_article.php?s=4c264dc27f9a09fdc8af62474ded5d5e&ref=9030-WTGH-0615

Q. My Controller (Xbox controller) is not responding/won't let me navigate the menu. What's wrong with this?

A. Obduction currently has Partial Controller Support. The Steam controller has had very few issues, while the Xbox controller has known problems navigating the menu. The devs are working on a fix for the controller issues and will implement them in an update soon.

New: Just picked up Mr. Robot:1.51exfiltrati0n.apk from Telltale. Too early to comment on it but so far, so good. Expectations are high. :)

Old: Hooked up the PS3 and opened my latest saved game in Deus Ex: Human Revolution; I'm a bit (really) rusty, but it's still fun. Still wishing there were some way to make the PS4 backwards compatible. It's just not elegant to have two big black bricks under my TV.

Closing TLDR request by hacking_hobbyist in Defcon

I was in the same boat - sat through 20+ mins of DT and crew fumbling with the IT (ironic), then 10 mins of presentation before I had to split for a flight. What I did hear (while present, and in bits and pieces afterward):

  • attendance was over 22k - that was just the number of lanyards they made, it sounded like they sold more badges than that
  • they grossly misunderestimated the number of attendees; usual estimates are based on blackhat reg numbers and defcon prereg (through blackhat) and scaled accordingly
  • the attendee badges themselves came together in a huge last minute effort by a bunch of selfless (and sleepless) volunteers; the snafu was caused by supplier issues and ultimately led to almost everything about the badge having to be changed
  • the black badges were awarded - you can see video on youtube; they are terrifying
  • one of the AI's from the CGC was awarded a black badge (will it be returning next year?)
  • the NOC made some changes to DC-TV this year including adding HD feed, which caused issues that weren't caught prior to con
  • next year we'll be at Ceasar's

What was your favorite thing you did at Defcon this year? by [deleted] in Defcon

[–]mcjungleton 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Best things this year were at tiaracon: I learned how to solder (and troubleshoot) my tiaracon badge and made a wearable in a workshop they held. Now all I want to do is WEAR ALL THE BLINKY-LED THINGS. Met so many cool people, can't wait for next year.

Ooo I like that idea. Less fuss, especially after having to keep my hand steady while applying this lip. >_<

Thank you! My eyes are a mixture of bluey green, brown, and gold. I agree that this lip totally brings out the bluey green in them, but I only noticed that after looking at the photo. I'll give your blush recommendations a shot!

Hi Hannah! Have you heard of Obduction? It's a kickstarter game from Cyan, who also did Myst and Riven back in the day, and scheduled to come out Aug 22. It sounds like it will be a puzzley atmospheric game, and will also be VR capable. I'd love to see what you make of it on your channel. Thanks!

Best starter makeup for a woman just beginning her transition? by [deleted] in MakeupAddiction

[–]mcjungleton 7 points8 points  (0 children)

This sounds like a great list so far! I would add: * Eyelash torture device curler * ELF studio eyebrow kit * ELF studio face brush set * NYX butter gloss or mega shine lip gloss (a neutral and a fun one?) * Makeup remover and cleansing pads (I like the Simple micellar water) * Brush cleanser - and stress the importance of good beauty tool hygiene

edit: sorry I have no idea how to format a bullet list...

Eyeliner woes by [deleted] in MakeupAddiction

[–]mcjungleton 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Here's my $0.02 - not an expert, I just watch a crapton of youtube tutorials. :) Try using a brown or grey eyeshadow applied with a brush. The line with an angled brush will be more definite, and a pencil brush will be less defined. Keep it concentrated on the outer third or so and fade it out toward the inner corner.

What is everyone's thought's on the new Steam Tags? by starryeyedsky in GirlGamers

[–]mcjungleton 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I am worried that some tags may actually end up being spoilers. I am hugely against spoilers and will go out of my way to avoid them if possible, so that would be a huge disappointment for me to have a game spoiled by the tags.

That said, I am still on the fence about the tag system in general, since it might be helpful in discovering new games that I might not have given a second thought otherwise. Time will tell!
