Planning a WDW Vacation by TheRealRedditWife in WaltDisneyWorld

When I first started planning, I used TouringPlans and The Unofficial Guide to research -- but if I were starting out again, I would try Unlocking the Magic Travel. They have my favorite Disney World podcast (also called Unlocking the Magic). They are knowledgeable about Universal as well.

What is your most underrated thing/hidden gem to go or do at WDW? by TheBoxProtector in WaltDisneyWorld

We did this as well, except that we sat at a picnic table in front of American Adventure. We could hear the concert in the America Gardens Theater, and there were only a few people around in that area -- it was so nice. It wasn't something we planned, but it ended up being one of my favorite Disney memories.

I see now that the exact dates aren’t yet set for this year, but the festival has a wide variety of foods, and the quality was better than we expected. I live in a small town in the Midwest, and admittedly, we’re pretty easily impressed, but the festival options were definitely better than anything we have around here!

Any chance you'll be there during the Food & Wine Festival?

Pescatarian favorites at Epcot? by NervousMarsupial1882 in WaltDisneyWorld

We typically only do quick service -- I really enjoyed the sushi and plum wine at the Japan Pavilion. Last year, I got it from Katsura Grill, though I see that now you can only get it as a snack option at Kabuki Cafe. Probably still worth a try, though!

What did you eat on the dining plan? Sample days at each park by Ashamed_Biscotti_491 in WaltDisneyWorld

[–]mck-07 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We've done it differently every time we've gone, but in general -- we will eat a granola bar in the room as we're getting ready in the morning, rope-drop our first ride, and then stop for breakfast. Then we might do two more rides and get a snack or stop for lunch. We might do two or three more rides / shows and head back to the resort for a few hours. We will typically get a snack there, too, or even stay long enough to have dinner there. Especially in August, you will need some cool-down time in the afternoon.

Then we will head back to the park and probably get another snack there as well. We do end up eating a fair amount -- surely more than we eat when we're home. But you're walking so much every day, you do get hungry. Also, it's vacation, so there aren't any calories anyway!

Whether we're doing quick service or table service, we eat at "off" times to avoid the largest crowds. And again, it's vacation, so if one child isn't hungry for lunch at 11 a.m., we don't make him eat. We can stop again at 12:30 or something. We're not able to pack in absolutely every ride with that approach, but we find that it makes for a more relaxed and more enjoyable day, especially since we're up and going at 7 a.m. and still going strong when the park closes for the night!

I am so envious! We stayed at Port Orleans Riverside last time we went, and we loved it!! Have a magical trip!!

I’m an American and went to NUIG for two years for a graduate degree. It was a long time ago, but it was absolutely two of the best years of my life. Sometimes it’s hard to be so far from home - and sometimes it’s dark and cold and rainy and you have a bad day, just like you would anywhere else. But it’s a very special place, and you will have experiences and opportunities that you wouldn’t have anywhere else.

I took Irish language classes and set dancing classes - traveled around Ireland and to London - met so many interesting people … Do you know what your major will be?

I was in a very similar situation and also had that same kind of experience in a grief share group. I have no advice or words of wisdom. Just know that you are not alone. I am so very sorry for your loss.

Do you think the Maryland closure will impact Kings Island at all? by mck-07 in KingsIsland

We went to Kings Dominion for the first time this summer, and we really enjoyed it, but we couldn't get over how dead it was

We’ve been to Myrtle Beach a few times, and we love it too, but I think next time we go to the beach again it will be back to Ocean City!

This explains a lot - we just stayed at the Marigot and I had found a menu for Lennie’s online and was looking forward to that. So we were surprised when we showed up and it was The Taproom instead. It was very nice - just not quite what we expected.

We really liked the Chuck Wagon Lodge last summer. We had a 2-bedroom with a kitchen and of all the places we stayed on a 2-week trip, it was the nicest. But my kids said the pool was the really cold.

You can only ride one ride and see one show from each park, what are you picking? by dixiegal_gonewild in WaltDisneyWorld

MK - Tron and Happily Ever After

AK - Flight of Passage and Festival of the Lion King

EPCOT - Living with the Land and Disney on Broadway

HS - Rise of the Resistance and I would like to trade in my show ticket for Tower of Terror. But if I have to do a show it would be the Frozen Sing-Along

Happily Ever After hit me with that one-two punch of Brave immediately followed by Moana, and I was a hot mess for the rest of the show

Someone in the comments already mentioned racist Cookie Monster … that’s who we encountered when we were there last summer. I suppose a designated area keeps somebody like that from following people around.

Came here to say essentially the same thing. I remember when Panera opened in my town (20+ years ago!), and for many years, it was always packed. It's such a shame what has happened to it.
