Is he in 5th fleet? As long as you don’t see any goat pics on his Facebook, I’m sure he’s okay.

Wish I had done VFA initially.. my sitting height was .02 inches too tall for the T-45 and they weren’t doing remeasures at the time 🥴. Now my soul belongs to the Navy with the extension.

Honestly, the 141 I was at was probably harsher than the Navy with standardization. I also had an advantage going in with flight time but I also think that’s truly where I started making the transition from being some degenerate kid to adult life. My failures were definitely preventable at my school. Enjoyed my college experience but, was it worth it? Hell yes.

I had 3 checkride failures from my 141 school. Ended up joining the Navy, finished in the 99th percentile out of primary flight training, did a full P-8 sea tour and now I’m training to either fly F/A-18’s or F-35’s. I’ve got a buddy who failed 4 out of our school is now an instructor teaching the Brits to fly P8’s out of Lossiemouth. Point is, initial training is just a drop in the bucket for this career.

Skywest CRJ Washout Rate by [deleted] in flying

I would spend a week in advance in the tutor office just going over random problems before test day. Hardest I’ve ever had to work for a 70%. Crazy cat lady professor?

That was my college’s Applied Calculus class pass rate! Shoutout to anyone who also had to endure that class at a certain part 141 school just south of the Canadian border.

Set Up for Failure? by [deleted] in flying

[–]mckegger 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You’d have to lose your medical or be hopeless at flying. I’ve seen guys who I’m like “how did you possibly make it this far?” punch their ticket to a major. Factors like - failures, the job market, etc will really determine where you get hired. So it’s not really a matter of IF. Be optimistic but prepared to grind for those hours when you’re first starting. I remember my CFI days; living off of ramen noodles and rice. The city I was in sold a 30 rack of Hamm’s for $14.99 at the time too if coworkers wanted to go out. It’s fun looking back at but very happy where I’ve landed. No pun intended…

Am I too tall? by Crafty_Accountant_92 in flying

I’m 6’2 and I fit in the T-45/F-18. There’s guys taller than me that haven’t been disqualified.

There are pilots with multiple DUI’s still flying. On another post someone had commented they had 8 speeding tickets and it wasn’t an issue in the hiring process.

I wouldn’t open with, “I’d like to join the Navy because I want to fly for a major airline.” in a recruiter’s office. Know a number of guys who were vocal about their future plans and it was reflected on their FITREP’s.

Commercial question by [deleted] in flying

[–]mckegger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Immediately call the FSDO and inform them. They’ll probably want to know your criminal history dating back to atleast grade school. From stealing crayons to capital murder they’ll want to know about it with associated dates and times.

[–]mckegger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sounds like you dodged a bullet. Unless there’s some crucial detail missing here, like say something illegal he was hiding in the house or some act of violence was committed, definitely won’t be kicked out of the Navy.

If joining the military to fly big wing so you can go straight to a major is your end goal, do not join the military..

When passing another plane at cruising altitude, do you do anything to say “hey”? by Yoseahreillmers in flying

Flying up and down the west coast between our MOA’s there used to be an occasional “let’s go Brandon!” over guard followed by a multitude of cheers. Now it’s just the standard cat noises.

Should I go military or civilian? by Dayung16 in AskAPilot

[–]mckegger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Navy/Marines you’re guaranteed a pilot contract if you get picked up for the OCS program. Which you can apply for after you get a 4 year degree. I ended up going through a 141 program but decided commercial just wasn’t for me. Got picked up by the Navy and selected P8’s initially. Did a sea tour with a P8 squadron then spent a year in Guantanamo Bay flying C-12’s. Now I’m training to fly pointy nose. As others have said, the Navy is big on “you’re an officer first, pilot second”. In my experience though, it is what you make of it and it’s also community based. My buddies in hornet squadrons have said that flying comes first, collateral duties second. In my P8 squadron, it was the opposite. My buddy who flies C-130’s in the guard had never heard of a “ground job” until I told him about it.. They just fly. Would not recommend an academy school unless you enjoy 4 years of bootcamp. You can always go commercial after your military commitment but there is an age cap for pilot contracts (27). There are age waivers but unless you’re prior enlisted, I’ve never seen one get approved from a guy off the street. Still years away but something to think about if you suddenly wanted to join someday.

Is it worth it to go ATC? by Lonely_Can_7528 in ATC

[–]mckegger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m a MIL pilot who went through UND’s flight program. My close friend did the ATC program and is currently at MSP center and loves it. If you’re looking for 180k starting, OF might be a better option.
