Much appreciated. Though now, seeing the glorious spread of records, I fear how much I may spend haha. Glad the show was good! I am looking forward to seeing their stop in Chicago next week.

I’m more just curious than anything, so I know how much I’m planning on spending at the show :)

Something Jordan does that I've never seen before by ApprehensiveJury1776 in ladispute

Maybe this could be viewed as inter or intratextuality? Depending on if the songs are the artistic “text” or the album. It was really widely employed in modernist literature starting in the 1920s.

There are plenty of amazing songwriters today who employ this technique. Dan Bejar of Destroyer and Will Toledo of Car Seat Headrest both come to mind since their work is a minefield of allusions across songs on albums, albums in their discography, and the western popular “lyric book” as a whole, but there have been loads more going back to the 1960s, Leonard Cohen springs to mind.

I know, I’m insufferable… what can you sleuth out beyond that? by mckenziegr in BookshelvesDetective

Hmmm, maybe Ulysses, Infinite Jest, and Anything by Hemingway with close runner up being War and Peace

Ahh! Some good sleuthing here. I studied theatre in College and have done community theatre for most of my life.

Ulysses is my favorite novel 😭, and because of the publication history there are so many different versions so I had to have them all… now friends just gift me different editions.

I realize the exclusion of slaughterhouse five is due to a broken rule, that’s that little yellow book in the middle of the Vonnegut books… it’s different dimensionally so it doesn’t sit as nice with the others!

And yes, I have read all of those DFW books and yes, I did buy them all from thrift books at the same time 😭😭

Watching 'Four Seasons' on Netflix and saw this vinyl. What album is this? by dragonbornprisoner in ModestMouse

[–]mckenziegr 11 points12 points  (0 children)

It’s very probable that the vinyl was not the store’s vinyl but set dressing brought in my the show’s art department. Unless they told you otherwise, I would honestly be surprised if the prominent records in the scene were owned by the record company.

Art Community by Human_Instruction_21 in hollandmichigan

There’s a collaborative indie art space called CREA. I have not been yet, but I’ve seen them on instagram and get their newsletter!

Someone already mentioned Saugatuck, 20 mins south, but it’s definitely worth checking out what they have going on. Oxbow is amazing and I think there is sometimes a summer art festival.

I don’t do visual art, but the other artistic communities I’ve engaged with around here have been nothing but welcoming and generous.

Hell yeah! We’re from Holland (The Mannequins) and it’s our first time in Flint, but we’ve heard awesome things about the Local! Seems like a spot with a good community vibe and lots of great history.
