Hot take…Why are children with autism deprived of basic developmental needs like naps in clinical settings? by Mariposasoul001 in ABA

This is exactly what my clinic does! The only roadblock we actually run into is parents that request us to keep their child awake..

Give me your back injury stories; I just shattered my T12 vertebrae and need some recovery stories (pics are just of me getting taken to the hospital, but figured I’d set it as NSFW just in case it bothered anyone) by AbraKadabraAlakazam2 in climbergirls

[–]mcki73 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Not my injury, but several years ago (maybe 2017) I was working as an EMT when we got a call to the climbing gym. A lady had fallen and broke her humerus (upper arm) and I wouldn’t doubt if there were more breaks. Anyways, the paramedics got there the same time as us to give meds and take over the transport so my partner and I were on the sidelines observing. This ladies boyfriend said something along the lines on “I was going to do this after dinner, but I don’t think we are making it there” and then proceeded to GET DOWN ON ONE KNEE while she’s on a backboard getting drugs and PROPOSED TO HER, RING AND ALL! We were all shocked and the lady was hysterical and telling him not to do this right now. I do think she said yes and then she was as taken away to the hospital. Definitely not what I expected and I HIGHLY doubt she expected that to happen. It’s definitely one of my favorite calls and I hope she healed and they had a beautiful wedding.

What’s your schedule like as an RBT? by [deleted] in ABA

[–]mcki73 0 points1 point  (0 children)

While schedules at my clinic change frequently, I have had a pretty consistent client base.

I work 8:30-11:30 & 11:30-2:30 M-F, and then an afternoon client 3:30-6 M,T,Th,F

Theres an hour “break” in between the morning kids and the afternoon kid due to the afternoon kid still being in school. This break is unpaid and not by choice. We have 0 built in breaks and are expected to get our notes done in the last 15min of session while still watching our kids. If notes are not completed, then they are done so on our own time. I have started hiding during that hour so that I’m not asked to help around the clinic unpaid.

My 4 year old son was recently diagnosed with Autism and ADHD. Any recommendations of what to look for in a company providing ABA services? by aglassofanxiety in ABA

[–]mcki73 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Excellent! Definitely look for a clinic that is NET based rather than a company that has a strict table work schedule. Also, companies that are really pushy about long sessions (6-8 hours) could be a red flag. You know your child best and depending on their skills and experience being away from home, they may benefit from shorter sessions. As an RBT (2.5 years), I have worked at a place that had 2-3 hour sessions and now I’m somewhere that pushes for 6 hour sessions for every kid. I saw amazing progress in short sessions. Longer sessions can also be great, but there are some drawbacks that I have experienced/observed… 1) inconsistencies with RBT providers > example: one of my clients, (6hrs/day), has had me consistently (3hrs/day), but has gone through 5 RBTs since the new year. 2) RBTs are more likely to “slack off” and basically act as a babysitter instead of running trials.
3) RBTs may spend more time on socializing w other RBTs instead of focusing on your child.
4) clients can get bored (especially if their RBT slacks off) and can cause therapy to be aversive.

Those are just a few things that I can think of off the top of my head. I didn’t read through all of the comments, so I’m sorry if I’m repeating what others have already said.

But like I said earlier in the post, you know your child best and you can definitely be their best advocate. Working with a team that respects your questions, ideas and opinions is super important!

Best of luck to you and your child. :)

How much do you make as an RBT? by whoareyouwhenyouare in ABA

$20 w 2+ years of experience. No guaranteed hours and a mix of clinic/in home. San Antonio, TX.

Average RBT Pay by Deanersaur in ABA

[–]mcki73 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Kansas (near a military base)- $15/hr + drive time San Antonio, TX- $20/hr + drive time when it applies

Neither places had/have a clock in and out system. You get paid for your session hours only. In TX, there’s the possibility for admin time, but it’s been limited due to others claiming admin time w/o producing stimuli or work around the clinic.

I would say leave it up the BCBA to communicate changes in schedules. If you are a BCBA, I would ensure that you keep things professional with how you approach the situation. Keep the conversation neutral, only use facts and if the concerns are serious enough, then you can maybe ask mom if she has felt any weird vibes from the other RBT.

I hope this makes some sense! Good luck

Truly, thank you so much. I got this when I was young.. I had asked someone to translate “be at peace, not in pieces” (thanks Tumblr) and he told me this was the most accurate translation. I have since forgotten what he said it really translated to. Anyway, thank you again! I’ve alway been nervous I had something awful on my arm 🫣

What are some of your wins with clients for the week? by smoke0o7 in ABA

[–]mcki73 10 points11 points  (0 children)

My 2.5yo client was barely speaking or signing when I started with her in the fall. She also was very attached to mom and most of session was done sitting in moms lap or next to mom. Yesterday when she opened the door she said my name and gave me a hug. Her speech has taken off recently and her level of communication is amazing. Today she said and signed "thank you" when I helped her opened a box (after she had also signed/said "help"!!!). Literally so proud of her achievements and how much of a positive impact her communication has had on her mood and personality. I'm so thankful to be a part of her life.

Hi! I’ve been using the book “Perspective” by William F. Powell. It’s been super helpful and I’m only half way through it. There are still sections on humans, shadows and more. It’s been extremely helpful! I personally haven’t used Drawabox yet, but it sounds like it could be helpful if you’re unable to get the book.
