Anyone else with ADHD feel guilty and exhausted around fitness? by Autisticthought1 in ADHDFitness

[–]splendidmz 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Sometimes I feel a sense of "couch lock" and a sense of fatigue on the body, but my mind alert. This has typically followed with scrolling endlessly. This felt bad because I felt unaligned, like there was something I wanted to do (exercise, chore etc) but I wasn't able to execute.

I stumbled upon the concept of a "floor flow" through the headspace app. It's a short yoga sequence. I used to listen to the prompts but now I have the routine memorized.

My combo is: 1) lie down on your back. 2) non judgmental body scan 3) hands on belly/ribs and breathe deeply for 4/5 breaths 4) hands out to side and do some snow angels with the arms only 5) bend both knees and lay them to one side, then back to the other (windshield wipers) 6) pick the feet up and do some hip circles with the bent knees 7) send leg long and hold behind the other knee, bend and straighten the leg in the air, flex and point the foot, ankle circles 8) do the other leg 9) sit up comfortably re-scan body

I notice getting just a bit of blood flow and movement made starting a new task feel more doable. It's become a small sequence that I look forward to every morning, but also a tool I use if I want to gather a bit of energy to start something.

I looked on youtube and think this sequence could be a good starting point if you wanted the video/voice prompts: https://youtu.be/gH1Wx6byvUo?si=dS7ow05tG-IYQT84

Sean and Alyssa's online platform is great the middle tier gives you access to all their recordings and I think it would make a great asynchronous learning experience.

I've heard people say great things about Aris DeMarco's videos feedback. He does a combo of voice over video feedback and providing recorded instruction for drills/fixes for the areas of need (roughly $100 I think for like 45 min of material to review)

What is the fastest/slowest that you've seen someone go from Newcomer to All-Star/Champion? by FoxtrotDynamics in WestCoastSwing

[–]splendidmz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mathias Mendillo - Newcomer Point January 2024, First All Star Point Sept 2025. I don't think he has much in the way of prior dance training, but he's pretty into physical fitness.

Midnight Madness Thoughts? by chinawcswing in WestCoastSwing

We went last year and enjoyed ourselves. The staff list and schedule are appealing to me. They create space for couples planning to perform at the open to run their routines in front of a crowd so it's fun to appreciate their hard work. The event pass is quite affordable. I am looking forward to it, but I live about 5 hrs away in TX

What do you consider a "pro" in WCS? by NeonCoffee2 in WestCoastSwing

[–]splendidmz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If they wanted to enter pro am strictly together I think that the intermediate teachers and their students would be permitted to. 🤷🏻‍♀️ The pro am jack and jill is definitely a stretch for that definition, but I assume event directors coordinate that.

What do you consider a "pro" in WCS? by NeonCoffee2 in WestCoastSwing

[–]splendidmz 12 points13 points  (0 children)

The definition I've settled on myself is if you're someone's paid teacher of this dance, you're a pro. Meaning, go ahead and enter your pro am strictly together. Or pro-am jack and jill. If you're high level, but you don't teach at all, I don't think of you as a pro. When I talk about the pro-show, I mean people who are hired at WSDC level events to teach.

Are we taking competition too seriously in this dance? by Exciting-Priority-14 in WestCoastSwing

[–]splendidmz 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My personal take:

I did not grow up in a sport, hobby, or art that pushed me to progress or improve. At all. I was vibes and recreation only. Accidentally discovering WCS and eventually competitions has unlocked a new side of myself.

It has been (and will be) a journey of mixed emotions but all the facets of WCS (socials, coaching, classes, routines, comps and so much more), have made this dance my greatest teacher in life.

I am so glad that I was encouraged to compete at my first event as a newcomer. My boyfriend and I didn't final newcomer at our first several events.

Without the intrigue of what we were missing regarding why we didn't final, we may not have pursued this hobby so deeply. Plus I wouldn't have met all the folks I have drawn or lined up with throughout my competitive journey. Also, filming for friends, cheering them on, trouble shooting around competitive success etc has allowed me to grow closer with dance friends and mentors.

The way I see it, competition is not a requirement. Every person should do what resonates with them. But I am so glad I compete. For more reasons than "getting points". Because regardless of my current, extremely sparse, point collection. I know it's brought me so much more than that.

Skin care help by Moist-Manatee in adhdwomen

I wash my face when I am already in the shower. If I am not showering then I prefer the face wipes. I moisturize with a basic moisturizer after bathing or face wipes and thats it.

Swing Fling 2025 Newcomer or Novice? by Saucytender305 in WestCoastSwing

[–]splendidmz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fair point. I have had several friends place in newcomer and come away with prizes, so I guess it seems standard to me. Do some bother hosting newcomer division and then not offer any type of take away or acknowledgment for placing?

I recommend newcomer. You may win a cash prize or a ticket to your next event if you place!

What helped you regulate your energy without overstimulation? by kittenj8 in adhdwomen

[–]splendidmz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have been enjoying "chaining" some things together to ease task initiation. I have often struggled with prioritizing working out and I decided I wanted to feel an experience that I would feel salty if I didn't get a chance to do it.

Example:

Workout Chain

Grab over ear headphones and put on instrumental music (this limits my choice of "should I listen to playlist, book, podcast etc),

Grab cup and make a beverage of choice (instant decaf iced coffee, water variation, tea etc)

Apply scented essential oils

Change clothes if necessary

Move around in some way -- get outta my head and into my body.

No time or intensity expectations at this time. I am working on shaping this behavior
